Compass Oncology Supports National Healthcare Decisions Month
At Compass Oncology, we take pride in our roles as physicians, nurses and staff members who together make up a collaborative and compassionate medical team. We are also spouses, children, parents, and community members who recognize the importance of thinking about what matters most to us and of planning for the future. Advance Care Planning allows us to have caring conversations with our own families and our own doctors, to ensure we get the medical care which best fits our values and priorities.

Monday, April 16 was National Healthcare Decisions Day. National Healthcare Decisions Day is an initiative to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of Advance Care Planning, a valuable way to express treatment priorities to healthcare providers and facilities who will respect those wishes, whatever they may be.

Testicular Cancer Awareness Month

There are approximately 140,000 men living in the United States who have survived testicular cancer. Even though 1 in 300 men have the chance of being diagnosed with the disease, testicular cancer is one of the most curable forms of cancer. In fact, the 5-year survival rate is 99 percent, when the cancer is found before it leaves the testicle.

Most testicular cancers can be found at an early stage. Ninety percent of men diagnosed with the disease have a lump on a testicle or notice that the testicle is swollen. While the lump is often painless, it can be uncomfortable. Some men with testicular cancer feel heaviness or aching in their lower belly or scrotum. Less common symptoms include breast growth or tenderness, loss of sex drive, and growth of hair on face and body before puberty.

If you have any of these signs or symptoms, speak with your doctor right away. While testicular cancer is sometimes found during testing for other problems, such as fertility tests, a testicular exam should be part of your routine physical exam. Some physicians also recommend men do self-exams every month.

Risk Factors for Testicular Cancer:

Age between 20 and 54
Family History
HIV Infection
CIS (carcinoma in situ)
Cancer of the other Testicle
Caucasian
Taller Body Size
Undescended Testicle (cryptorchidism) at birth or first year of life

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month ~ Dr. Miklos Simon Answers FAQ's

What is the incidence of colorectal cancer?
The American Cancer Society estimates that 143,460 people will be diagnosed in 2012 and that 51,690 will die from colorectal cancer in the United States. It is the third most common cancer. 90% of new cases and 95% of death from colon cancer occur in people 50 or older. However, colorectal cancer does not discriminate and can happen to men and women at any age. While rates for colon cancer in adults 50 and older have been declining, incidence rates in adults younger then 50 years has been increasing.

Is colorectal cancer preventable?
Yes, colorectal cancer is largely preventable. Studies show that decreases in colorectal cancer mortality are strongly correlated with an uptake in colorectal screening. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 2003 and 2007, approximately 66,000 colorectal cancer cases were prevented and 32,000 lives were saved compared to 2002. Half of these prevented cases and death were due to screening. There is data supporting that physical inactivity, obesity and red meat consumptions increase the risk for colorectal cancer. In a recently published study, involving 37,698 men, red meat consumption was associated with an increased risk of total, cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality. Substitution of other healthy protein sources for red meat was associated with a lower mortality risk.

Is there any new drug available for colorectal patients who progressed despite other approved treatments?
Since the addition of new chemotherapy agents to 5-Fluorouracil, the backbone of colorectal regimens, and the incorporation of targeted treatments, like VEGF and EGFR inhibitors, patients live longer with improvement of quality of life. With sequential drug therapies, we can treat this disease as a chronic illness. In a recent phase III trial, a new single-agent treatment with the investigational drug regorafenib, significantly improved survival and delayed cancer progression in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who had progressed after all approved standard therapies, as compared to treatment with placebo and supportive care. Regorafenib is an oral multikinase inhibitor of a broad range of angiogenic, oncogenic, and stromal kinases. The most frequent side effects were hand-foot skin reaction, fatigue and diarrhea. No new or unexpected safety signal was found in the trial.

Compass Oncology Reminds Men And Women to Get Screened
For both men and women at average risk, the American Cancer Society recommends screening begin at age 50 using one of the tests listed below.
   1. Yearly stool blood test (FOBT) or fecal immunochemical test (FIT)
   2. Flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years
   3. Yearly stool blood test plus flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years
   4. Double contrast barium enema every five years
   5. Colonoscopy every 10 years

Compass Oncology and Marjiesfund Host Fundraising Benefit for N.E.D.
Compass Oncology and Marjiesfund were the presenting sponsors of the Dancing with N.E.D. fundraising benefit on March 11 at the Tiffany Center in Portland. A special evening to support the movement to increase awareness of gynecologic cancers.

Two hundred guests attended the dinner and silent auction, enjoyed a live performance by N.E.D. and watched a special preview of the documentary, Dancing with N.E.D., the story of six gynecologic surgeons who formed a rock band. Named after the four words every cancer patient hopes to hear, No Evidence of Disease, N.E.D. is on a mission, using their original music and lyrics to break the silence surrounding gynecologic cancers. Dr. William Winter, (pictured left) Compass Oncology physician and surgeon, is lead guitarist in the band and co-writes many of the songs.

The sold-out benefit raised over $50,000. Success means that the band and documentary will ignite the path from greater awareness of gynecologic cancers all the way to greater funding and research.

Proceeds from the event will go to Marjiesfund. This nonprofit supports community education and outreach, early detection initiatives and research for gynecologic cancers. Marjies Fund supports NED as well as Spark Media who is filming the Dancing with N.E.D. documentary.

Compass Oncology and Marjiesfund would like to thank everyone who came together in support of this great cause!

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
Cervical Cancer is treatable when diagnosed early.

A yearly pap test can help diagnose pre-cancerous conditions so they can be
treated. Recommended screening for cervical cancer includes regular checkups,
including a pelvic exam and a Pap test, which can identify women who may have
cervical cancer or pre-cancerous tissue changes. Finding the disease earlier can often improve the effectiveness of treatment and prevent death.

Risk Factors for Cervical Cancer:
 - Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
 - First intercourse at an early age
 - History of multiple sex partners
 - HIV infection
 - Chlamydia infection
 - Long-term use of birth control pills
If you experience any of the risk factors contact your physician.

Meet Belle Piazza, Miss February in the 2012 Colondar
Belle Piazza, has been a patient of Dr. Miklos Simon since 2007 when she was diagnosed with Stage III rectal cancer at the age of 43. Belle continues to fight cancer through chemotherapy treatment at Compass Oncology. My hope is that by sharing my story, I can help save other families from the pain my friends, my family and I have gone through because of my cancer, said Belle. I'm truly thankful for each day and enjoy every moment I'm given.

Earlier this year, Belle traveled to New York to be photographed for the 2012 Colondar, produced by national nonprofit The Colon Club, features 13 men and women representing young colon cancer survivors. Each year, models reveal their abdominal scars as a way to represent strength and their shocking journey.

To purchase a Colondar, or to read each patient's story, visit www.colondar.com.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month
The best way to prevent lung and other types of cancer is not to smoke.
If you stop smoking, you'll start to reap benefits almost immediately. Within 20 minutes, your heart rate and blood pressure will drop. Smoking, which damages nearly every organ in the human body, is directly linked to nearly 90 percent of lung cancer deaths. It's also important to eat right, live an active lifestyle, maintain a healthy weight, and know the risk factors for the disease.

Symptoms/Risk Factors for Lung Cancer:

Hoarseness, wheezing or a cough that doesn't go away

Persistent chest pain, often made worse by deep breathing

Recurring infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia or tuberculosis Weight loss and loss of appetite

Bloody or rust-colored spit or phlegm

Shortness of breath

All forms of tobacco smoking

Exposure to second-hand smoke

Family history

Previous exposure to asbestos

Exposure to radon gas
Speak with your doctor if you have experienced any of the symptoms listed above.

Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
There is no known specific cause of Pancreatic Cancer and it is very difficult to diagnose and detect in its early stage. Signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer vary and sometimes do not occur until the disease is in an advanced stage.

The signs and symptoms may include:

Upper abdominal pain

Lower back pain

Yellowing of skin and whites of eyes

Loss of appetite

Significant loss of weight in the first 30 -60 days

Depression

Digestive issues

Itching
These possible warning signs may be related to other causes and should be evaluated by a physician. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please see your doctor.

Compass Oncology, The Norhwest Cancer Specialists, Reminds Women To Get Screened For Breast Cancer
National Mammogram Day is October 21. This day is set aside during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to remind all women to make an appointment for a mammogram. An x-ray picture of the breast, a mammogram, is the single most effective method to detect breast changes that may be cancer long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt.

Screening can identify women who may have breast cancer or pre-cancerous tissue changes that warrant further evaluation. It can also detect breast cancer earlier in its development, which often can improve the effectiveness of treatment and prevent death. Recommended screening for breast cancer includes yearly mammograms for women starting at age 40, and a clinical breast exam as part of a periodic health exam every three years for women in their 20s and 30s, and every year for women 40 and older.

Women at increased risk (e.g. family history, genetic tendency, past breast cancer) should talk with their healthcare provider about the benefits and limitations of starting mammography screening earlier, having additional tests or having more frequent exams. Women should also know how their breasts normally feel and report any breast change promptly to their healthcare providers.

National Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Week and Previvor Day

Facing Our Risk Of Cancer Empowered (FORCE) is the only national non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. In 2010, history was made with FORCE's successful effort to pass a Congressional resolution declaring the first-ever National Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) Week and National Previvor Day. HBOC Week marks the transition between National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The goal of HBOC Week and Previvor Day is to raise awareness about hereditary cancer. During this week, from September 25 - October 2, FORCE is recognizing and celebrating those who have been affected by hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, including women and men with BRCA mutations, anyone with a family history of cancer, breast and ovarian cancer survivors, and previvors, individuals who are living with a high risk for cancer but have not developed the disease.

At Northwest Cancer Specialists (NCS), our Genetic Risk Evaluation Team includes physicians and nurses with the expertise and experience to look carefully at your family history and give you the knowledgeable guidance about cancer detection and prevention.

We can help determine if you have a genetic mutation that puts you at risk for cancer, and guide you through the sometimes confusing process of deciding if genetic testing is for you.

Dr. Lucy Langer, Co-Medical Director of the US Oncology Network GREAT Program, is a medical oncologist who brings more than 15 years of genetics experience to NCS. She has performed genetic research at Columbia University and at UCLA. Dr. Langer is committed to providing evidence-based personalized care for all her patients.

What can you do to help the cause?

Join Team NCS at Light The Night on October 1st!
Northwest Cancer Specialists has walked in Portland's Light The Night each year since 2000.

The Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's evening walk and fundraising event to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) funds lifesaving research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers.

A donation of $25 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.

A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
Please join our team's effort by registering to walk or by making a donation. Your participation in the Light The Night Walk will help save lives. Be sure to check our team Web site frequently to see our progress, and thanks for your support!

Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month
Northwest Cancer Specialists Supports the Foundation for Women's Cancer in New Learn, Listen, Act National Campaign to Help Women Prevent and Detect Gynecologic Cancer

In support of Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month (GCAM) NCS urges all women to LEARN how to prevent and detect women's cancers, LISTEN for common symptoms, and ACT quickly to seek care from a gynecologic oncologist if you suspect or have been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer.

Every woman is at risk for developing a gynecologic cancer. An estimated 88,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the US in 2011. Steady progress has been made to lessen the burden of gynecologic cancers through research. Of particular promise is better understanding of the risks, symptoms and prevention of the three most prevalent gynecologic cancers: cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and uterine cancer.

The Foundation for Women's Cancer urges increased emphasis on helping women understand the steps that can be undertaken to reduce the risks for these cancers and receive the earliest possible diagnosis through symptom recognition. Read the LEARN, LISTEN, ACT Toolkit which outlines the facts by cancer type that women need to know.

Project Access NOW Thanks Dr. Shao
Dr. Spencer Shao became involved with Project Access NOW about three years ago through his practice with Northwest Cancer Specialists. A medical oncologist, Dr. Shao's clinical interests focus on cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, head and neck, genitourinary tract and hematologic malignancies.

Dr. Shao believes Project Access NOW is a great idea because it provides access to healthcare for those who would not otherwise have any. Cancer is a particularly daunting and life threatening diagnosis. Many patients have a curable disease if the cancer is caught soon enough. He is glad that he and his partners are able to help patients at a critical time in their lives.

These patients deserve a chance, he says. Through Project Access NOW, we are able to be that patient's lifeline. Project Access NOW is able to bring people hope when they are facing very difficult times.

Dr. Shao is happy to volunteer and believes that adequate healthcare is a right, rather than a privilege. He sees his contribution as an investment in the community.

We work as part of a community together and by helping even just one patient, we improve the community as a whole. Read the article online.

Project Access NOW (PAN) is a nonprofit that coordinates a network of volunteer physicians and other health care providers, making it easier for them to donate medically necessary care to the low-income uninsured in our communities. By helping navigate the health care system, Project Access NOW can get them the care they need.

July is UV Safety Awareness Month. Be Sun Wise!
Follow these 8 steps for sun safety

Do not burn. Sunburns significantly increase one's lifetime risk of developing skin cancer, especially for children.

Avoid Sun Tanning and Tanning Beds. UV light from tanning beds and the sun causes skin cancer and wrinkling.

Generously apply sunscreen: about one ounce to cover all exposed skin 20 minutes before going outside. Sunscreen should have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 and provide protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.

Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses, when possible.

Seek shade when possible and remember that the sun's UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Use Extra Caution Near Water, Snow and Sand. Water, snow and sand reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chance of sunburn.
Check the UV Index. The UV Index provides important information to help you plan your outdoor activities in ways that prevent sun overexposure. The UV Index forecast is issued daily by the National Weather Service and EPA. Visit www.epa.gov/sunwise/uvindex.html.
Get Vitamin D safely through a diet that includes vitamin supplements and foods fortified with Vitamin D. Don't seek the sun.
