NCS Welcomes Dr. Colleen McCormick

Dr. Colleen McCormick joins our expert team of gynecologic oncologists after completing her extensive
training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and University School of Medicine.  Colleen is a dedicated physician who understands the complex journey that women with cancer face.  She feels honored to be a part of their healing process and views her ability to care for patients as a privilege instead of a job.

Colleens' experience with the da Vinci robotic system for minimally invasive surgery complements the Northwest Cancer Specialists' group of gynecologic oncologists--the first in the Portland-Vancouver region to utilize this revolutionary technology.

In her down time, Colleen enjoys exploring her new hometown, cooking, quilting and rooting for the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens.

Dr. McCormick will be seeing patients at the Rose Quarter Cancer Center and Vancouver Cancer Center.

N.E.D. "No Evidence of Disease"

The Band:  N.E.D.
Dr. William Winter is a gynecologic oncologist with Northwest Cancer Specialists and the lead guitarist for N.E.D. The band is made up of six gynecologic oncologists who always hope to deliver the sweetest message their patients can ever hear:  "No evidence of Disease."

The CD:  Now Available
What started as a dream became reality.  The band's debut CD is available at Amazon, BordersBarnes & Noble and Motema Music.  All profits from the CD will be donated to the N.E.D. Fund, established under the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF). Each CD also includes an in-depth educational guide to gynecologic cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The Cause:  Rhythm Heals
The community is "banding" together in support of the cause.  Northwest Cancer Specialists is leading the way with local healthcare groups, non-profit groups, businesses, physicians, patients, survivors, friends and family to raise money in support of the N.E.D. Fund at the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation (GCF), whose mission is to support education, early detection and research for gynecologic cancers.  A local fundraising event, Rhythm Heals, will be held Sunday, October 25th at Portland's Historic Crystal Ballroom. Joining N.E.D. for the evening's musical entertainment are local Portland musicians Tom Grant, Ron Steen, Dave Captein, Renato Caranto, Michael Allen Harrison, Valerie Day, Linda Hornbuckle, Margie Boule, Jackie Salzinger and Shelly Rudolf who are donating their performances in support of this worthy cause.  To receive an invitation, please reply to this email with your mailing address.

N.E.D. will also perform live two weeks later at the Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Movement (GCAM) Weekend in Washington D.C., a first-of-its-kind for survivors, friends and family, and physicians who are touched by gynecologic cancers.  Northwest Cancer Specialists recognizes the importance of this inaugural awareness-raising weekend and is inviting our community to join us in supporting the cause.  The local fundraising event "Rhythm Heals" gives us an opportunity to assist N.E.D. in their mission: to enhance knowledge about gynecologic cancers to save lives, as well as to bring hope through music to women undergoing treatment and to the world at large.

Northwest Cancer Specialists Uses da Vinci Surgical System to Provide Superior Gynecologic Cancer Care

NCS physicians have always been at the forefront in adopting beneficial technologies for patients.  When the gynecologic oncologists at NCS learned about the da Vinci Surgical System and the benefits of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, they were eager to pursue the opportunity to provide patients with the most advanced and safest standard of care.  All five surgeons are trained to use the da Vinci Surgical System and have played a vital role in embracing the technology and making it a more popular option for other physician groups in the area.  A sixth da Vinci trained surgeon, Dr. Colleen McCormick, joins the NCS gynecologic oncology team this month.

Cancer Facts

Statistics show every seven minutes a woman hears the diagnosis of a gynecologic cancer--about 80,000 women each year.

~Gynecologic Cancer Foundation

In 2009 about 11,270 women will have been diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer.

Almost every case of cervical cancer can be prevented using the Pap test, the HPV test, and the HPV vaccine.

Each year, 20,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  Currently, there is no effective early detection method.  For the 20% of ovarian cancers that are found early, the five-year survival rate is 93%.
