January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Cervical cancer is treatable when diagnosed early

A yearly pap test can help diagnose pre-cancerous conditions so they can be treated. Recommended screening for cervical cancer includes regular checkups, including a pelvic exam and a Pap test, which can identify women who may have cervical cancer or pre-cancerous tissue changes. Finding the disease earlier can often improve the effectiveness of treatment and prevent death.  In addition to regular screening, a vaccine that is highly effective in preventing some types of HPV infections in young women is now available. HPV infections are the leading cause of cervical cancers, and the HPV vaccine, which is administered by a series of three vaccines, is recommended for 11 to 12 year-old girls, and 13 to 26 year-old girls/women who have not yet received or completed the vaccine series.

Risk Factors for Cervical Cancer:
  • Human papillomaviruses (HPV) infection
  • First Intercourse at an early age
  • History of multiple sexual partners
  • HIV infection
  • Chlamydia infection
  • Long-term use of birth control pills
If you experience any of the risk factors contact your Physician.
