Northwest Cancer Specialists and N.E.D. host benefit concert

Northwest Cancer Specialists (NCS) and the band N.E.D. joined hands
at the Rhythm Heals benefit concert on Oct. 25 at Portland's historic Crystal Ballroom to enhance knowledge about gynecologic cancers.

N.E.D., which stands for No Evidence of Disease, is a band comprised
of six gynecologic oncologists from across the United States who have dedicated their talents to the cause.  Dr. William Winter, NCS physician, is the lead guitarist and co-writes many of the songs.

The benefit raised nearly $40,000 for the N.E.D. Fund at the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation and Marjie's Fund, a Lake Oswego-based foundation who works closely with the band and is dedicated to educating the public about gynecologic cancers, promoting early detection and supporting promising research.

N.E.D also performed live at the inaugural Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Movement in Washington D.C. on Nov. 8 with benefit concerts in Amarillo, Texas, Chapel Hill and Raleigh, North Carolina to follow.

Their debut CD is available to purchase at Amazon, Borders, Barnes & Noble and Motema Music.  All proceeds from CD sales and live performances will be donated to the N.E.D. fund.

NCS would like to thank everyone who came together in support of this great cause!  Watch the video of N.E.D. performing live at the Rhythm Heals event.

Interview with Dr. Jay Andersen

Listen to Dr. Andersen's interview on KUIK's Family Focus 101 during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.

Dr. Andersen discusses the benefits of the Oncotype DX assay test in women with early-stage (Stage I or II), node-negative, estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) invasive breast cancer who will be treated with hormone therapy.  The test provides a more personalized evaluation of recurrence risk, identifying those patients who warrant inclusion of chemotherapy in addition to anti-hormone therapy as part of their treatment plan.

Dr. Andersen also commented that it is important to be appropriately educated and to be aware of this as an additional diagnostic tool that may help navigate their risk and treatment recommendations.

Family Focus 101 discusses things most important to families and couples.  Hosted by Diane Dennis, a professional Life Transition Coach, Family Focus 101 is an honest, serious, but light hearted program, that is informative, entertaining and essential to the family unit of today.  Most importantly, it is local and involves people and solutions that you can relate to.

Are Clinical Trials Right for You?

Clinical trials are available right here in your own community.  Northwest Cancer Specialists sponsors more clinical trials for cancer than any other cancer treatment facility in the Portland-Vancouver area.

Questions to Ask Your Physician as You Consider a Clinical Trial:
  1. How can this study help me?
  2. What other treatment options are available?
  3. What side effects might I experience?
  4. Are there possible long-term risks?
  5. How will participating in this study affect my daily life?
  6. What kinds of treatment, medical tests or procedures will I have, and how often?
  7. Where will I receive my treatment?
  8. Who will be in charge of my care?
  9. How long will the study last?
  10. Will my health insurance cover treatments and test I receive as part of this study?
  11. What kind of follow-up care will I receive after the study?
  12. When do I have to make a decision about participating?

Lung Cancer Awareness Month

More people die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer

More than 161,000 people are expected to die from lung cancer in the United States this year alone.  Smoking, which damages nearly every organ in the human body, is directly linked to nearly 9 out of 10 lung cancer deaths.  It's also a major contributor to several other types of cancer including esophageal, oral, throat, cervical, kidney, stomach and pancreatic cancers.

Speak with your doctor if you have experienced any of the symptoms below:

  • Hoarseness, wheezing or a cough that doesn't go away
  • Persistent chest pain, often made worse by deep breathing
  • Weight loss and loss of appetite
  • Bloody or rust-colored spit or phlegm
  • Shortness of breath
  • Recurring infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia
