Sherie Hildreth, SHOC Foundation

Sherie has spent the past 30 years as an educator in the Gladstone School District.  In 2004, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and took a leave of absence from her teaching career to undergo surgery and chemotherapy treatment.

In a recent interview on local radio station, KINK FM, Sherie and Dr. Paul Tseng, gynecologic oncologist at Northwest Cancer Specialists, discussed ovarian cancer and their patient-physician relationship.  During the interview, Sherie was asked how she handles the ongoing chemotherapy treatment for this chronic disease.  She answered, "When I am in the infusion lounge I have friends, we laugh, it's almost a coming together.  It has become a part of my life, not that I want to be there forever, but it's not a negative place.  Northwest Cancer Specialists is a positive place for me to go."

"Sherie is an extraordinarily positive person which goes a long way in handling the challenges of the disease.  It is a wonderful thing for me to see and for other patients to see as well."  Dr. Tseng commented on Sherie's outlook.  "In treating patients with recurrent ovarian cancer we manage the disease with ongoing chemotherapy treatment but in a way that it enhances a patient's lifestyle, the treatment should not be worse than the cancer," continued Dr. Tseng.  To listen to the KINK interview, click here.

After her diagnosis, the more Sherie learned about this chronic disease, the more she was determined not only to survive, but to make a difference in the lives of other women who have been diagnosed.  This life altering event motivated her to create the Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer (SHOC) Foundation to promote education and research for the prevention and cure of this disease.  In the past four years the SHOC Foundation, a 100% volunteer organization, has donated over $172,000 to the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute research laboratory.
