Ann Bisgyer-Wolz Shares Her Story

nullIn 1993, at age 38, I was diagnosed with Stage II Breast Cancer.   Seven years later my Husky Malamute named AD (short for Ann's Dog) started acting strangely, like she sensed that something was wrong.  At night she would get up on the bed with me and just kept sticking her nose up under my arm.  I went in for a biopsy, a tumor was there and the cancer was advanced.  Ann tells Jenny Hansson, with KOIN Local 6 News, how her dog detected her cancer recurrence.  Watch the video

I knew about Northwest Cancer Specialists (NCS) because my mother-in-law had her treatment there for pancreatic cancer.  I felt very comfortable with them, which was important to me.  I am originally from New York so when I was back there for a visit I had an appointment to get a second opinion and their advice, "don't bother with radiation; you're not going to live long."  Northwest Cancer Specialists took my case to their breast cancer review board - a multidisciplinary group of doctors who come together to provide guidance on difficult cases. After talking to my doctors at NCS, I went with the decision to have radiation.

In 2001 I couldn't find anyone with metastatic disease, not one person. Northwest Cancer Specialists has been great; they are walking the uncharted territories with me. Now, living with cancer has become more like living with a chronic disease.  Treatment has really advanced for breast cancer with tailored treatments based on the genetics of the tumor.  Read more

On January 28th, 2010, the Oregon and SW Washington Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recognized dedicated sponsors, donors, fundraisers and volunteers at its annual Partner Appreciation and Awards Ceremony.  Ann received the Promise of One Award which is given to an individual who has contributed sustained efforts to enable the Affiliate to make a significant impact on its promise: to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.  Ann serves on the Affiliate's Race Committee and her story has inspired many.

April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month

There are approximately 140,000 men living in the United States who have survived nulltesticular cancer. Even though 1 in 300 men has the chance of being diagnosed with the disease, testicular cancer is one of the most curable forms of cancer.

In fact, the 5-year survival rate is 99 percent, when the cancer is found before it leaves the testicle.  Most testicular cancers can be found at an early stage. Ninety percent of men diagnosed with the disease have a lump on a testicle or notice that the testicle is swollen. While the lump is often painless, it can be uncomfortable. Some men with testicular cancer feel heaviness or aching in their lower belly or scrotum. Less common symptoms include breast growth or tenderness, loss of sex drive, and growth of hair on face and body before puberty.

If you have any of these signs or symptoms, speak with your doctor right away.  While testicular cancer is sometimes found during testing for other problems, such as fertility tests, a testicular exam should be part of your routine physical exam.  Some physicians also recommend men do self-exams of their testicles every month.

Risk Factors for Testicular Cancer:
  • Age between 20 and 54
  • Family History
  • HIV Infection
  • CIS (carcinoma in situ)
  • Cancer of the other Testicle
  • Caucasian
  • Taller Body Size
  • Undescended Testicle (cryptorchidism) at birth or first year of life
