Ann Bisgyer-Wolz Shares Her Story
In 1993, at age 38, I was diagnosed with Stage II Breast Cancer. Seven years later my Husky Malamute named AD (short for Ann's Dog) started acting strangely, like she sensed that something was wrong. At night she would get up on the bed with me and just kept sticking her nose up under my arm. I went in for a biopsy, a tumor was there and the cancer was advanced. Ann tells Jenny Hansson, with KOIN Local 6 News, how her dog detected her cancer recurrence. Watch the video.
I knew about Northwest Cancer Specialists (NCS) because my mother-in-law had her treatment there for pancreatic cancer. I felt very comfortable with them, which was important to me. I am originally from New York so when I was back there for a visit I had an appointment to get a second opinion and their advice, "don't bother with radiation; you're not going to live long." Northwest Cancer Specialists took my case to their breast cancer review board - a multidisciplinary group of doctors who come together to provide guidance on difficult cases. After talking to my doctors at NCS, I went with the decision to have radiation.
In 2001 I couldn't find anyone with metastatic disease, not one person. Northwest Cancer Specialists has been great; they are walking the uncharted territories with me. Now, living with cancer has become more like living with a chronic disease. Treatment has really advanced for breast cancer with tailored treatments based on the genetics of the tumor. Read more.
