How much copywrite study
Sent Wednesday, June 9, 2010
Some less informed readers think there is a significant amount of
time to spend in studying the craft of copywriting. While your
education is important, is should only be up to 25% of the time you
spend actually doing copywriting.
Any experienced copywriter will tell you that you don't have to be
good to get started, but you have to start to be good. When you
spend more time writing and sending campaigns, you'll quickly
discover what works.
Sure, you can study the masters like Ogilvy, Sugarman, Quinn,
Kennedy, Halbert, or Bly. However, don't let it get in the way of
actually doing something.
If you're one of those, "study, study, study, and never do people"
I'm not going to apologize for telling you that time is being
wasted without application.
It's like the five copywriters who now meet every Friday morning to
talk strategy, discuss the latest techniques, and study the
masters. Because the economy is a little tight they decided to
vote on meeting twice a week.
To change the meeting schedule they need a vote from each charter
members, but after the first meeting one of the founders, Jim, has
been hard to reach.
When the new group President finally reaches Jim, asking, "We've
been meeting 8 weeks now, the market is down, Will you be available
to vote on having a second meeting each week?" Jim reply's ...
"What, I didn't notice the market is down. In fact business is
booming and I'm still busy implementing the ideas from our first
meeting!"
Sometimes the study of copywriting becomes a social activity, even
a little addictive. When in fact, study doesn't create results as
fast as implementation.
Very often sending out campaigns will tell you more about what
works for your market than understanding marketing systems. If I'm
going to go broke, I'd rather do it finding out what really works
for my market.
Chances are, with a little study and a lot of action you'll put
yourself easily in the winners circle. There are so many great
copywriters just waiting to get started. Are you one of them?
Cordially yours,

P. s. Speaking of implementation, it's been suggested each member
of our upcoming "Selling Your Services as a Professional
Copywriter" that homework be assigned that gets you new
assignments. That's a great idea. While this program will be
no-charge to members, I'd suggest setting funding your marketing
budget -- it's the best way to put copy the sells to the test.
