SPORTY AND PRACTICAL - THE HYUNDAI VELOSTER 2012

Featured Vehicle

Hyundai Motor Company Australia has announced that a 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine will join the already confirmed naturally aspirated 1.6 litre petrol engine in the innovative Hyundai Veloster coupe line-up.

Click here to watch our promo video.

Hyundai Motor Company Australia plans to launch the naturally aspirated Veloster in early 2012, whilst timing of the turbo model variants is yet to be confirmed.

Standard Or Turbo Engine

The turbocharged model will join Hyundai Australia's line-up after the local launch of the naturally aspirated Veloster in the first quarter of next year.

Although it is still to be confirmed, the Veloster Turbo will almost certainly feature Hyundai's new Gamma 1.6 T-GDI powerplant which boasts 152kW of power and 265Nm of torque. The standard Veloster will be powered by a 103kW/167Nm 1.6-litre petrol engine.

A six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will send power to the front wheels.

Fuel Economy

In addition to the injection and valve-timing technology, Hyundai claims the engine's electronic throttle control, roller timing chain, variable induction and use of anti-friction coatings will combine to provide an impressive highway fuel economy of 5.9 litres per 100 kms.

The car shares it's underpinnings with the Accent sedan, sitting on a 2,650mm wheelbase. Overall length is 4,220mm, width is 1,790mm and weight is a tick under 1,200kg.

Stopping power will be provided by 280mm discs at the front and 262mm discs at the rear.

Following the trend of recent models such as the i45 sedan and i40 Tourer, the steering and suspension of local Velosters will be tuned locally to suit Australian conditions. The suspension set-up is MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear.

Sporty And Practical

Hyundai has discovered an untapped niche in the automotive market with it's Veloster -- a car that is sporty and practical but offering something beyond the norm.

That quality is the small car's asymmetric body construction. When people refer to 'three-door hatches', they're typically counting the tailgate as one of those three points of entry. That's not the case with the Veloster, which features two conventional doors on one side (the passenger side) and one long door on the driver's side. The tailgate is an extra.

Enhanced Ride Comfort

It rides on a MacPherson-strut front  and rear end with mono-tube dampers for enhanced ride comfort.

In the safety department, Veloster scores a full suite of the good stuff including vehicle-stability-management.

Styled at Hyundai's studio at the Namyang R and D centre, the designers drew their inspiration from a high-performance sport motorcycle  with the black A-pillars giving the windscreen a motorcycle helmet look. Inside is dominated by a centre stack and controls that also have motorcycle inspiration. Also borrowed from the motorcycle is the floor-mounted centre-console armrest that has been made to look like a bike seat.

HOW AIRBAGS WORK

Tips And Tricks

For years, the trusty seat belt provided the sole form of passive restraint in our cars. There were debates about their safety, especially relating to children, but over time, much of the country adopted mandatory seat-belt laws. Statistics have shown that the use of seat belts has saved thousands of lives that might have been lost in collisions.

Like seat belts, the concept of the airbag -- a soft pillow to land against in a crash -- has been around for many years. The first patent on an inflatable crash-landing device for airplanes was filed during World War II. In the 1980s, the first commercial airbags appeared in automobiles.

To date, statistics show that airbags reduce the risk of a fatality in a direct frontal crash by about 30 percent. Then came seat-mounted and door-mounted side airbags. Today, some cars go far beyond having dual airbags to having six or even eight airbags. Having evoked some of the same controversy that surrounded seat-belt use in it's early years, airbags are the subject of serious government and industry research and tests.

Laws Of Motion

Let's review our knowledge of the laws of motion. First, we know that moving objects have momentum (the product of the mass and the velocity of an object). Unless an outside force acts on an object, the object will continue to move at it's present speed and direction. Cars consist of several objects, including the vehicle itself, loose objects in the car and of course, passengers. If these objects are not restrained, they will continue moving at whatever speed the car is traveling at, even if the car is stopped by a collision.

Stopping an object's momentum requires force acting over a period of time. When a car crashes, the force required to stop an object is very great because the car's momentum has changed instantly while the passengers' has not -- there is not much time to work with. The goal of any supplemental restraint system is to help stop the passenger while doing as little damage to him or her as possible.

What an airbag wants to do is to slow the passenger's speed to zero with little or no damage. The constraints that it has to work within are huge. The airbag has the space between the passenger and the steering wheel or dashboard and a fraction of a second to work with. Even that tiny amount of space and time is valuable, however, if the system can slow the passenger evenly rather than forcing an abrupt halt to his or her motion then the chances of injury will be greatly reduced.

Design And Technology

SRS airbags are a Supplementary Restraint System and work in conjunction with the seat belt. They provide a barrier that can reduce the severity of head injuries sustained in a crash.
  • The driver airbag is located in the hub of the steering wheel.
  • The front passenger airbag is usually located in the dashboard above the glove compartment.
  • Side airbags in the door panel or seat and curtain side airbags are located above the side doors.
These types of airbags are now standard in many new vehicles.

How Airbags Operate

  • During impact, sensors in the vehicle detect sudden deceleration;
  • A strong enough impact will induce a flow of electricity to the inflator which lights the gas generator;
  • The airbag fills in a few milliseconds - faster than the eye can blink - into the space between the occupant and steering wheel, dashboard or doors;
  • The bag then deflates quickly by allowing the filler gas to escape through vent holes or through the weave of the fabric. The energy of the occupant is absorbed while this occurs.
Many airbags are now dual stage, i.e. the airbag can inflate to two or more levels, depending on the impact speed and the distance the seat is from the steering wheel.

If your car has an airbag:
  • Read the owner's manual to understand the operation of the vehicle's airbag system;
  • If the steering wheel can be tilted, position it so that the airbag will deploy towards the chest, not the head.

DELIGHTED AND COMPLETELY SATISFIED

Featured Customer Review

This month's featured customer review is by Rob from Hallett Cove who purchased a second hand Ford FG XR6 from us back in April 2011. He was so happy with the entire process that he came back again to upgrade to a brand new Ford FG XR6 Limited Edition in September.

"It all started back in April this year when I purchased a second-hand FG XR6 from your used car section (Aaron Watson). I was completely satisfied with the car, but then saw the XR6 LIMITED EDITION on the FORD website and could see that it was great value for money. I phoned Adrian Brien Automotive on Monday the 12th September, spoke with Anothony Tovey, and subsequently visited the showroom that afternoon. Our discussions were straight forward, simple and most importantly, no high pressure sales atmosphere. So much so, that it was pretty straightforward in signing a sales order. I initially ordered a colour that had to be ordered on the factory, but within a week, changed my mind to a colour that was in stock, and took delivery on Friday 23rd September. I am delighted and completely satisfied with the car. I would have no hestitation in recommending Adrian Brien Automotive to any prospective Ford purchaser, as I believe I got a great deal in the changeover, dealing with very friendly and cooperative sales people, in particular Anthony, that clearly have a genuine enthusiasm in their job."
