How To Write A Stand Out Resume

This story and more in this month's Adrian Brien Automotive eNewsletter...

NEW HYUNDAI ACCENT 2011

Featured Vehicle

Power With Efficiency

A 1.6L engine produces all the power you need, with excellent fuel economy and low emissions.

Fuel Efficiency / Aerodynamics

The all-new Accent has been designed and engineered to provide power with fuel efficiency. The lightweight Gamma 1.6L engine uses continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) to deliver the precise air-fuel mixture required to meet engine demands and minimise fuel consumption. This, coupled with an aerodynamic body that minimises the coefficient of drag, adds up to a remarkable performance.

"I test drove 5 other similar sized cars before I bought this one. I loved the way it looked inside and out. It's a cute little, reliable car... Excellent warranty too, which was really important to me." - DawnD.

Gamma 1.6 CVVT Petrol Engine

The all-new Accent's Gamma 1.6 CVVT engine utilises an aluminium block, low friction moving parts and CVVT technology to deliver up to 91kW of power at 6,300rpm while producing 156Nm of torque at 4200rpm. Combined fuel consumption is a low 6.0L/100km (manual) and 6.4L/100km (automatic)*.

* Source: Australian Design Rule 81/02 static laboratory combined average city and highway cycle test for manual. Fuel consumption will vary depending on a combination of driving habits and the condition of the vehicle.

"Surprisingly roomy inside. Very easy to drive and park. Everything is sized and placed nicely for a 5' 5" woman. There is quite a bit of engine and road noise, but a small price to pay for an economical, fun little car." - Wanda McVeigh.

Transmissions

Hyundai has engineered the all-new Accent's transmissions so that they do not require servicing under normal driving conditions. The new ergonomic 5-speed Manual transmission includes a redesigned reverse gear selection for easier operation. The Automatic transmission (pictured) features HiVec (Hyundai intelligent Vehicle Electronic control), with overdrive and lock-up converter, that adapts to your driving style. It also offers a sports mode for more dynamic driving.

"I really like this car, I traded in my 2003 Ford Taurus that kept breaking down. Of course the ride is not as smooth as the bigger, heavier car but not bad for a small car. Actually it is quite large inside and small on the outside. I am 5' 5" tall, I drove across country and was totally comfortable. My taurus seats gave me a pain in the you know what. These seats are just the right shape and firmness for me... Air conditioner works better than my Taurus. This car fits me perfectly. Great for running to work and back every day." - Fred.

Comfortable Ride & Agile Handling

To provide maximum ride comfort, the all-new Accent's suspension and steering has been specifically tuned to meet Australia's unique road conditions. The long wheelbase of the new Accent contributes to a smooth ride with enhanced stability. Comprehensive use of sealing and sound muffling materials ensures a quiet, refined drive.

"Heating and A/C system was excellent, so was illumunating and Radio/CD. Music system has a USB connection so that only thing you're going to do is just insert USB stick and enjoy." - cem.

Car Care Tip

With the cost of living constantly increasing and concerns about the environment everyone wants to know... what is the best way to save fuel and spare the wallet?

Here are five simple, easy tips to help reduce your fuel bill:

  1. Stay under 88kph--this may be tough for you if you're a bit of a speed demon, but you will need to tone it down if you want to conserve fuel.
  2. Accelerate and brake smoothly--a bit of a challenge if you have a lead foot. However if you have a tendency to floor it in acceleration, it is good practice easing your speed up and down.
  3. Keep tires properly inflated--you've probably heard this many times. Don't ignore your tires until there is a problem. Keep an eye on the tire pressure.
  4. Roll up the windows when traveling above 64kph--open windows create drag on the vehicle at highway speeds. It's okay to leave the windows down at lower speeds, just remember to switch to air when you get out on the highway.
  5. STOP idling! This one seems like a no-brainer, but there are a lot of people who still believe it's better to leave the car running than to stop & start. Not true! Plus, today's cars do not need to be "warmed up" so there is no need to idle before you get into the car.

Another great review for Service Manager, Ivan Hosking and his team who are described by Noelene and David from Mitchell Park as extremely approachable and professional with a willingness to listen and follow through on concerns.

"For some time we have had mechanical problems with the above vehicle, a Hyundai Terracan Diesel. In desperation we brought it to Adrian Brien and after persistence and many frustrations Service Manager, Ivan Hosking and his team have finally fixed the problems. At all times Ivan has been extremely approachable and professional and we have particularly appreciated his willingness to listen to and follow through on our concerns. We look forward to a long and satisfying association. Thank you."  - Noelene and David from Mitchell Park.

HOW HAS CAR SAFETY IMPROVED OVER THE YEARS?

Frequently Asked Questions

Car safety has improved a lot over the years from the mechanical linkages of the early days to Electronic Stability Control offered by many modern cars today. Here we take a look at a brief history of car safety and how it has evolved.

Q: How have car manufacturers improved their safety features over the years?

A: Safety features have improved a lot since the first cars were made.

The first car had mechanical linkages to brakes, however they now have hydraulics and Anti-Lock Braking Systems to help stopping. The brakes have changed from the old drums to discs. Split hydraulic systems were introduced during the 1960s, which means that if one set goes you still have some braking capability.

Steering has also improved with new types of linkages, some of the really old cars had chains attached to the wheels, similar to boats.

Some old cars only had leaf springs and no shock absorption, now there are many different types of suspension.

In the 1970s, collapsible steering columns came in and now they have been replaced by airbags.

Progressive crumpling of all panels now provides better occupant safety.

These days many cars also come with Electronic Stability Control which helps you get out of trouble in an emergency.

FATHERS' DAY GINGER BUTTER BISCUITS

Featured Recipe

With Fathers' Day just around the corner we thought that it would be good to share with you this recipe for Fathers' Day Ginger Butter Biscuits. N.B. the key to this recipe is to get your kids involved!

Preparation Time
  • 20 minutes.
Cooking Time
  • 17 minutes.
Makes
  • 30.
Ingredients
  • 225g (1 1/2 cups) plain flour.
  • 75g (1/2 cup) self-raising flour.
  • 160g butter, chilled, cubed.
  • 70g (1/3 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar.
  • 2 tbs ground ginger, sifted.
  • 2 tbs golden syrup.
  • 2 tbs milk.
  • icing.
  • 150g (1 cup) icing sugar, sifted.
  • 10g (2 tsp) butter.
  • 1 1/2-2 tbs hot water.
  • 1-2 drops food colouring of your choice.
  • 80g hundreds and thousands.
Method
  1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 2 baking trays with non-stick baking paper.
  2. Sift the flours into a medium bowl. Add the butter. Let your child rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  3. Add sugar and ginger, and mix until well combined. Whisk golden syrup and milk to combine. Add to flour mixture and use a flat-bladed knife to mix until mixture just comes together.
  4. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and use your hands to bring the dough together. Let your child knead the dough lightly until it is smooth, then divide the dough in half. They can use a rolling pin to roll the dough on a lightly floured surface until about 5mm thick. Give them a 7cm (top to bottom) heart-shaped cutter and let them cut heart shapes from the dough. Place the shapes on a lined tray and repeat with the remaining dough. Place in the fridge for 5 minutes to chill.
  5. Bake in preheated oven, swapping the trays after 9 minutes, for 17-20 minutes or until the biscuits are light golden. Set aside for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack for 20 minutes or until cooled completely.
  6. To make icing, place icing sugar and butter in a small bowl. Add hot water and stir to combine. Add food colouring and mix well. Place hundreds and thousands in a small bowl. Let your child spread each biscuit with a little icing, then lightly press, iced-side down, in the hundreds and thousands. Place on a tray for 5-10 minutes to set.
Notes
  • Prep: 20 mins (+ 5 mins chilling, 20 mins cooling and 5-10 mins setting time).
  • The biscuits will keep for up to 1 week in an airtight container.

Variations

Vanilla Butter Biscuits: replace brown sugar with 80g (1/2 cup) icing sugar mixture, sifted. Omit the ginger and golden syrup. Add 2 tsp of vanilla essence to the flours with the butter in step 2.

Chocolate Biscuits: replace the brown sugar with 80g (1/2 cup) icing sugar mixture and 30g (1/4 cup) cocoa powder, sifted together. Omit the ginger and golden syrup. Increase milk to 60ml (1/4 cup).
