A Note from Dale
Hello,
Happy Mother's Day! Let us each remember our mothers (those with us and those looking down upon us.) Everyone reading this newsletter is a son or daughter, and that mother-child relationship seems to deepen with each passing year. I know it does for me. I often find myself reflecting on my mother's journey. She did not have an easy life, and there were often times of turmoil in our family over the years, but I recognize we have the here and now. I find myself thinking, what can I do for my mother? We call each other more often, say I love you every time and thank each other for everything. These are such simple but important things. And, if you get the nudge to do something special, I say do it now! This July when we're together for my son's graduation in NYC, I am taking her to see Mary Poppins on Broadway. She loves to tell me the story about when she was in NYC the last time - on her honeymoon in 1950 and saw Mr. Roberts on Broadway. I hear the excitement in her voice as she plans for this special trip. It will surely become another one of our precious shared memories. Today's article is how to help our parents avoid becoming victim to financial exploitation. Over the years I've written a lot on this topic. But, I can never write enough ... as our elderly and their families have their lives ripped apart by this terrible crime. Elder abuse is one of the most under-reported and under-prosecuted crimes in this country. Every senior is at risk, regardless of socio-economic level, education or geographic location. Within the next month, as World Elder Abuse Day draws near (June 15th), expect to hear about programs local to your area. I encourage you to attend and take your aging parents with you. The best way to counter this terrible threat is to raise awareness, educate families so they know how to best protect their loved ones and who to reach out to, in case exploitation occurs.
I hope today's article gives you some in-depth understanding behind financial exploitation and how you can protect your aging parents.

Best wishes to you and your aging parents and as you journey together.

A Note from Dale
Hello,
I hope you and your family have been enjoying Spring... wherever you may be. I just returned from Washington, D.C. where I was privileged to present my ADAPT framework to aging professionals at the Aging in America conference. About 3,000 professionals gather each year to learn about new models and programs that can be replicated, hear about new research findings in aging, and learn how each of us can be a more effective advocate when we return to our home state. I came away with an expanded network of colleagues and a renewed passion for my work on behalf of each of you!

The hot topic this year was care transitions. I heard over and over again how there is a lack of integration between the medical and social models. With the mandate to reduce hospital re-admissions, there is a need to ensure that a patient being discharged from the hospital is connected with the community resources that will aid him/her in the transition. I learned that often an older adult is released from the hospital and does not understand their medications, their discharge plan of care, and that there is considerable patient and caregiver stress.

There are some wonderful models out there in 16 states to aid in such transitions. But, if there is not yet a program available to your parent in their geographic area, I'm offering an alternative in this month's featured article. The National Transitions of Care Coalitions provides 5 wonderful documents/tools to help caregivers as they navigate care transitions. I hope this article and these tools help you and your family.
Best wishes to you and your aging parents and as you journey together.

How to Help Your Aging Parent Transition from the Hospital
Care transitions was the hot topic at the recent Aging in America conference in Washington, D.C. What is a care transition? It happens each time your parent goes from one health care provider or health care setting to another. For anyone with an aging parent, the most challenging type of care transition usually occurs when our parent is discharged from the hospital.
Think back to the last time this happened to your parent. I recall the moment all too well. My mother was incredibly weak, overwhelmed, and emotionally fragile. Fortunately for us, she was able to come home. But, we often have to transition our parent to someplace other than home, perhaps rehab or long-term care. And, we often have to make the decision of where in a very short period of time, lacking adequate information for a quality decision.
The National Transitions of Care Coalition has developed information and tools to help caregivers as they navigate care transitions. Take time now to read about and download these tools. I believe they can help ease future transitions and empower you to guide your aging parent to better quality care and health.

A Note from Dale
Happy Spring! I hope warm weather and sun has returned to wherever you may live. If that lifts our spirits, think of what it does for our aging parents! How about taking your parent on a Mystery Ride? Everyone loves a surprise and some fun. When I visit my mother this month, I'm going to pick one of her favorite places and drive us there. I'll let you know how that goes :)

Does it ever seem that you have more than your share of challenges? You might have noticed that my website has been out of sorts. Actually it was hacked big-time. I owe a huge thanks to each and every one of you for your patience as my web tech support person, Carol Pecora, worked tirelessly to move my website to another hosting service and get everything restored. If you ever need a web designer or tech support, I highly recommend Carol. Carol offers website help for small businesses include website design, updating, troubleshooting and maintenance at affordable prices. callcarol.com

But, I realize this hack was just a minor event in the larger scheme of life. If you're reading this newsletter, you are caring for an aging parent either directly or from afar. Our minds are always on their needs, expressed or unexpressed. And, sometimes we need to have tough conversations with them ... about things that we might not want to think about. That's what this week's featured article is about. How can we help our parents share their end-of-life wishes with us and ensure that when the time comes, our entire family can honor their wishes? I've come to understand that this is a loving gift to our parent and one that will give us all a sense of peace. I hope this article helps you and your family.

Best wishes to you and your aging parents and as you journey together.

3 Tips to Help Your Respect Your Aging Parents' End-of-Life Wishes
You may think you know your parent's end-of-life wishes, but there is nothing like a planned and focused discussion, to ensure you (and your siblings) are on the same page with your parents.
Yesterday, I attended a program that included viewing the documentary, Consider the Conversation. Afterwards colleague and elder attorney Doug Germann led us in discussion which shed a light on our perceptions about death and dying. This one-hour film was created to open up the floodgates of conversation within families while there is still time. Through commentary in the film by terminal patients, family members, health professionals and clergy, I began to understand why conversation doesn't happen often or soon enough.

A Note from Dale
Happy Valentine Day's! While I realize that we will reach out to our aging parents and loved ones at this special time of celebration, I wonder if we can also reach out to another elderly person, perhaps someone who has no family visiting them. A card, brief visit or even phone call can mean so much to those older adults who have lost their family and friends. It seems so simple to ask, Is there anything I can do for you? or Would you like to go out for a cup of tea? Whenever I do this with my elderly friend, her face lights up like it's Christmas. :)

In the spirit of that idea, I want to share a special Valentine quote: Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning. ~Author Unknown

On to today's article! This special article is meant to help you prepare for your parent's next physician visit. As I speak with adult children, I find that either they or a family member often accompany their parent to doctors' appointments. That is a great first step. But, do you ever leave the doctor's office and think, We didn't get all our questions answered. I've still got critical concerns. I hope today's article will help you address that situation with tips and strategies.

Best wishes to you and your aging parents and as you journey together.

Hello,

I am sharing this special research project and survey request with you because I believe this project has the potential to strengthen and empower family advocates so that their loved ones receive the best healthcare possible.

Background...

I want to introduce Betty Tonsing, Ph.d, who I just met last week and wrote about in my recent blogpost..
She is the loving wife of a man who was a healthy 74 year old and .... 8 months later, he is now in long term care in the Veterans' home in Lafayette, IN. Theirs is quite a story!

Betty is using her personal experience, research and writing skills, and her passion to help other families become effective advocates for their loved ones. She has created something she calls The Advocacy Project, and has asked me to share her survey with my readers who could complete the survey (and also) might be able to forward it to other family advocates. The survey results, interviews with families and her own saga will form her next book, to be written especially for families and caregivers.

Betty has amazing energy and vision, and her heart is truly in this effort.

Below is the link to her survey. She would love to have the link circulated to as many people as possible (those who have been advocates for their loved ones in the healthcare system.)
The survey is short, well-designed and easy to complete. It would be great if you too would complete it!

https://www.surveymonkey.com/

Betty's email address is btonsing@aol.com
Thanks for your help. Dale...

Hope you had wonderful holidays! You've probably heard that ER (Emergency Room) visits spike around the holidays and during the winter. Not surprising! A couple of the most common reasons include: the harsh, cold winter is hard on an aging body, and there is also an increased likelihood of falling outside. Today's article is meant to help you prepare for that next ER visit. It's not a matter of if, but more likely, when. The urgency of such preparation smacked me right in the face yesterday. Another resident of my area asked to meet with me to share the saga of her aging husband's 8 month decline from healthy 74 year-old to resident in a long-term care Veteran's home. One thing Betty said to me several times yesterday, Dale, please let people know the documents they need to have in place for a hospitalization. So, I have taken her request to heart and have written today's article focused on the things you need in place .... I hope you find our article helpful.

On a related note, Betty wants to help other families who may also find themselves navigating the complex healthcare system. She has founded the Advocacy Project and is gathering feedback from families who have advocated for their loved ones (through a survey.) Her goal is to incorporate survey results, interviews with family and professionals, and her own personal story into a book to reach and help as many families as possible. In a separate email, I will send the link to that survey, in case you wish to share your experience and your story of advocacy for this special Project.

Best wishes to you and your aging parents and as you journey together.
Dale

5 Things You Should Know Before Your Aging Parent's Next ER Visit
Yesterday, I met with a lovely woman, Betty, who shared about the saga of caring for her husband, from the time he entered the hospital as a seemingly healthy 74 year old until now ... just 8 months later, a resident of a long-term care facility, a Veteran's home.
My mind quickly became overwhelmed as she shared the rapid pace of her husband's decline in terms of his health and the way in which he had been handled by the health care system and moved from place to place, from ER to hospital to rehab to acute long term care to long term care. Betty shared her saga with amazing clarity but also with great emotion.

A Note from Dale
Hello,
Thanksgiving and Christmas are fast approaching. But, let's not forget some other holidays that may carry a lot of importance for our aging parents. Veterans Day has just past. For anyone who has served in our military, especially our aging veterans, this day holds tremendous meaning. If you (and your children and grandchildren) have not yet sat down with your aging parent and asked to hear the story of their service, don't delay. There is such a richness of sharing that special history with the whole family, and allowing our parents to reflect and share the importance of that experience in their lives. Remember, our aging parents are still on a very special developmental journey. They are striving to understand the significance of their life and the legacy they will leave behind.

In case you missed it, on November 8th , I hosted a one hour teleseminar, Resources and Strategies Revealed. In it, I provided a brief overview of my new upcoming 3 part seminar, Transitioning Your Aging Parent: a 3 part seminar featuring the ADAPT framework. This is the same 3 part seminar that I've delivered locally here in South Bend, Indiana. I am now offering this seminar to any caregiver, anywhere in the comfort of your own home, over the phone. I am also offering a one hour Bonus call of Questions and Answers. Seminar attendees will be able to submit their questions, and I will answer as many as I can within that hour. I hope you'll consider joining us for this special 3 evening seminar.

A recent attendee told me, Caring for an aging parent is a lonely journey, kind of like stumbling in the dark. This seminar was like turning a light on ... so we could see which way to turn. The seminar will be on November 15, 16, 17 (8pm Eastern.) Recordings of the calls will be made available. For more information, and to register, click here by 11/14.

But, there is a wonderful quality program, available to all. The Stanford Self-Management workshop provides support and education on choices, options and practical ways in which to deal with chronic pain. Powerful Program to Help Our Aging Parents Manage Chronic Pain
Chronic pain! It's like an unseen turmoil that continuously saps the energy, strength and joy of life from our aging loved ones. It can easily lead to anxiety and depression.
Just about every elderly person I know is dealing with chronic pain in some form. My mother has daily headaches and pain in her shins. She has been to a number of specialists and has had all the possible testing. But, still no answers or relief. My friend Cathy, with a rare skin condition, has been to the very best specialists at Mayo Clinic. She is currently taking the maximum dosage allowed of the relevant medication, and still ends many days in chronic pain, exhausted and going to bed for relief. If you think about your aging loved ones and friends, I'm sure you could share your own stories.
Hearing the stories and understanding the negative impact chronic pain can have on quality of life and relationships, I have always wondered ... what can be done to minimize it? Is there some combination of non-medication factors that could offer relief?
There is a wonderful, no-cost Stanford University online workshop, Better Choices, Better Health, a service of the National Council on Aging. Whatever the chronic condition - diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic pain, anxiety or something else, the workshop can help a person learn to be proactive and take better control of their health and life. Let me share its benefits and how it works:...
