A Note from Dale
Hello! Hope you are enjoying Spring wherever you may be. It's quite chilly here in the midwest, but we are certainly enjoying the wonderful sunshine. I have some special news to share with you. On Friday, I received word that I had been nominated for "Business of the Year" by our local Real Services (Area Agency on Aging) for "giving selflessly of time and talents to support older adults and the disabled." It is an honor to just be nominated. Winners will be recognized at the"Age of Excellence" luncheon to be held in South Bend, IN, May 20th.
In today's ezine, I'm sharing 6 resources that will help you avoid caregiver burnout. Caregiver burnout can have serious consequences for our physical and emotional health, our relationships, and the person to whom we are giving care. I hope these resources help you! In our Media Review, I highlight a new DVD, "Saving Our Parents", a wonderful program hosted by Ed Asner.
Here are a couple of special features this issue...
If you have not done so yet, we ask you to complete a short survey about your preferences in communication with care providers. There is an excellent solution available for care providers to update and communicate with families. As the company (Tutela) looks to build upon its original offering, it is seeking feedback from "you". Thank you!
And, last but not least, be sure to check out my April line-up of guests/interviews for BlogTalkRadio's Transition Aging Parents show. I've already had interviews with the author of a unique caregiving book and the founders of a new relief fund for caregivers. Those interviews are available via archived recordings (links below.) This Tuesday, I am delighted to be joined by expert Rita Files as she tells us everything we need to know about VA Pension Benefits for veterans and their spouses. Listen live or via the archived recordings.
As always, my best wishes to you and your parent(s) as you journey together,
Dale Carter...
PS: Welcome to all my new subscribers! I am so very grateful to have you as part of our Transition Aging Parents community. I think you'll love the information, tips, and inspiration you'll be receiving!

6 Resources to Help You Avoid Caregiver Burnout
Caregiver burnout.
It sounds nasty and it is. It's
insidious. It creeps up on us. While we are focused on caring for our loved
one, we may become short-sighted, not thinking long-term, not realizing
that our current mode of operation is unsustainable.
In my recent interview with the founders of Caregiver
Relief Fund, I found that one of their key criteria for selecting recipients (of aid) is that the caregiver must be in their role for at least 12 months. Founder Michael Lindenmayer shared that such
a caregiver will likely be at their point of exhaustion, a critical point for intervention. If they do not seek out help then, they may
go into silent crisis mode and vanish. Michael's recognition of this critical point is a warning for each of us. However, you may reach your state of
exhaustion much sooner.
Please do not wait until you are at your point of exhaustion! I am providing some resources (below) that you can
investigate and consider now.
- Before
I get into external resources, be sure you have opened up the lines of
communication with your family members, your place of worship and established
sources of support (friends and neighbors).
Sometimes in the chaos of caregiving, we overlook the very people who would
help us if they were aware of our situation.
- Support
for spousal caregivers. If your aging parent is caring for their spouse or you
find yourself caring for your spouse, do not think you can do it alone. Reach out to your family and children, keep
them informed and involved. Spousal
caregivers are probably most likely to feel that it is their obligation to bear
the burden alone. It is not. Wellspouse offers a great site with resources
and online chat forum; organizes regional respite weekends, and provides continuing
support for members whose spouses have died: http://wellspouse.org/
- Family
Care Navigator (state by state). This is
an awesome resource provided by the Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA.) You simply
click on the US map for the state you're interested in. FCA navigator helps you locate government,
nonprofit and private programs in your area (covering services for caregivers and older adults.) It includes info on government health and
disability programs, legal resources and disease specific organizations. http://caregiver.org/caregiver/jsp/fcn_content_node.jsp?nodeid=2083
- Adult
Day Care. What's your perception of
adult day care? 4,000 centers in our
country provide care for the older adult and respite for their caregivers. Included are innovative
programs that keep the mind and body engaged and fit. Recent research show the centers improve
overall quality of life for seniors and their caregivers report less depression
and anger, and a greater sense of well-being.
Read more in a recent NYTimes article, http://newoldage.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/31/a-reprieve-for-caregivers-and-the-elderly-alike/ Find an Adult Day Care Center at: http://nadsa.org/
- An
Eldercare specialist. Many times we just
need to speak to a professional who understands our situation and is able to
offer the right resources and options for our particular family and financial
situation. While there are many coaches
and services out there, I highly recommend Aging with Grace (founded by
Patricia Grace.) For one low annual fee,
Patricia's quality service offers "unlimited telephone access to eldercare
specialists as well as online access to extensive eldercare/caregiver Knowledge
Base". For details, http://agingwithgrace.net/pages/individuals
Media Review - "Saving Our Parents" DVD
When I attended the Aging in America conference last month, I received a complimentary copy of the new DVD, "Saving Our Parents.". After watching it, I highly recommend it to adult children and their families. You could buy one copy and pass it around among siblings. Nothing can equal the power of seeing families share their most intimate stories. The DVD covers 3 very important topics:
- Comprehensive list of scams. The message is that "predatory caregiving" is at epidemic proportions in the country. This serious problem affects the elderly across socio-economic boundaries. If you think it can never happen to your loved one, you need to watch this DVD. In a very short period of time, these criminals can starve, over-medicate or poison your loved one.
- Signs of hording and tips for organization. Hoarding has gotten a lot of publicity lately. The DVD highlights the facts and offers help.
- Long-term care options. The biggest lesson learned here is: do not rely on the official tour and the physical appearance/beautiful facade of a nursing home.
Bottom line: Get and stay involved with your loved one. If you live at a distance and can't be with them, then hire a trusted geriatric care manager! Your parent's health and well-being can deteriorate in a very short period of time.

Survey - Need your input about communication with Care providers!
If you answered the survey after the last ezine, thank you!
If you haven't answered, there's still time to have your feedback included and be entered in the drawing for the Amazon gift card. Read on...
If you've taken my E-course, you know I feel very strongly about effective communication with your parent and family. Just as important is communication with your parent's care providers. If your parent is in Assisted Living or a Nursing Home, you realize how much it means to know how your parent is doing each day.
There is a company that is trying to make that happen with their solution, Tutela Connect. Care providers (in assisted living, nursing homes, home care, adult day services or independent senior communities) can use Tutela Connect to provide daily updates and communicate with their residents' families (via a secure website.)
Please complete this short survey, sharing your thoughts about communication with care providers. Tutela will use this survey in their effort to expand their current product and ultimately benefit senior residents, their families and care providers.
There are several initiatives across our country to change nursing homes from a medical, institutional model to a patient-centered model. Tutela's product offering can certainly be a facilitator of that change.
Please be a part of this culture change and take Tutela's short survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ ZH3LH82
(Complete the survey by April 23rd. You'll have the option to win a $20 Amazon.com gift card.)

BlogTalkRadio April Line-up
Our first two interviews of April were just excellent. I am always amazed at how much information we are able to share in the short span of 30 minutes. But, even more amazing are the compelling personal journeys of those I interview. Although each guest's journey is unique, they all share a profound love and caring for the well-being of our older adults and their caregivers, most often adult children such as you and I.
I hope you can listen to the archived recordings of our April 6th and 13th show, and then listen live this Tuesday as we cover the VA Pension Benefits process.

Seniors in the Spotlight
In each issue, I want to spotlight a senior who inspires me and hopefully will warm your heart. There are so many wonderful elderly role models. May these stories help us keep a positive perspective on the aging process.
Here's a quick YouTube video of a lovely centenarian, Florence Austin, celebrating her 102nd birthday. It's sure to put a smile on your face!
Feel free to share this issue with friends and family, and invite them to subscribe. I will never share email addresses with anyone. And, folks can unsubscribe at any time.
Note about Dale
Dale Carter is wife, mother of 3 grown children, and long-distance caregiver to her elderly mother. She is a former educator and university IT consultant. In the spring of 2008, a major life experience (helping her elderly mother through a major health/life crisis) changed the course of Dale's life work.
Dale created "Transition Aging Parents" as a way to share her experience and reach out to other adult children of aging parents. She provides insight and shares information to help adult daughters and sons ensure their aging parents "thrive and find joy" in every stage of life.
Her goal is two-fold: to serve as a resource for adult children as they help their aging parents through the many transitions in aging AND to highlight this time in their journey together as one of joy, renewed bonds and reflection of lives well-lived.
