Praise in the Storm

I watched Yul as he looked over the remains of his ruined
house. It had been in the process of being constructed. At one point he leaned over one of the
fractured adobe walls and began weeping.
He would have to start all over again.

T

wo days prior, a freak storm came through the village
of El Sauce. In the six years I have been working in this
village I had never seen such a sight.
Being from Northeast Ohio, I'm accustomed to some
fairly strong storms, but this was more than I had ever seen in Sauce. The winds ripped the tin roofs off many homes
and some walls that were no more than tin or plywood were gone. The hail (a first for the folks of El Sauce)
was marble sized and battered everything in sight for a good fifteen minutes. The high winds caused the hail to fly
horizontally. When it was over it looked
as if a small tornado had come through.
Yul, Maximino and I were under the pavilion where the church
meets. We were having a Bible study when
the sudden storm drove us to huddle inside the small shed that was built to
hold the chairs for worship times.
Maximino was huddled in the corner very frightened as Yul was standing
at the open door watching the hail fly past.
He said, Isn't it beautiful?
Amazing how differently folks see things.

Yul and Chely's house at the beginning of construction (about a week before the storm). The walls were much higher at the time of the storm.

Since we were up in the village there was no way for Yul to
protect his half built adobe home from the rains and hail. Normally this is just a matter of draping
sheets of vinyl over the tops of the
walls. The storm came up fast and
without warning. There was no way for
Yul to protect his home. After a few
minutes it was evident that Yul was beginning to realize this storm was not
passing fast and was only strengthening.
He knew his house would suffer damage.
When we returned to the Ministry
 Center after the storm, Yul
looked over to his house (on the adjacent property). He said he would not even go look at it until
morning. Yul will not do work on
Saturday as he practices his belief in honoring the seventh day (Sabbath) and
devoting it wholly to God.
Early Sunday morning, Yul went out to see the level of
destruction to his home. He was
devastated. The adobe blocks were no
longer hard and dry, but wet and had a melted look to them. He made plans to attack the problem the
following morning because he had determined to go into the village to help repair other people's homes.
Monday morning the workers reported as usual. Their day would be different however. Instead of working on the ministry center
they decided they would try to save Yul's home.
Yul had to make an early morning emergency hospital run that ended up
keeping him all day in the city.
The workers labored all day trying to patch the walls and
sturdy them for drying out. It was a
long day for them, but they left feeling optimistic. When Yul returned from the city, he too felt
optimistic that it just might work. The
real test would be to see what happened as the walls dried out.
It didn't take long to learn the results of their
labor. The following morning at 6:00 a.m., I walked out the door and look across
the field. I watched Yul as he looked
over the remains of his ruined house. At one point he leaned over
one of the fractured adobe walls and began weeping. The repairs had not worked. The walls continued to crack and separate as
they had begun drying over night. Yul
now knew the remainders of the house he had saved and worked so hard for would
now need to be torn down. Yul admitted
it was difficult to understand why God had allowed this to happen, but also
said he knew God had a better plan. The
words came from his mouth a little forced, but he carefully chose his words so
not to dishonor God in anyway. He was fighting to demonstrate his faith that
God had something better for him. In
everything he honored God and gave thanks.
He began pulling the blocks off one by one and throwing them
aside. I joined him. Yul worked on one side of the house while I
worked on the other side tearing down one block at a time. For several minutes we worked in silence when
suddenly Yul yelled out, I know why God let this happen.
Yul ran over with one of the adobe bricks that had busted in
half as he had pitched it aside. He had
a smile on his face and held the busted brick up. God saved my life and the life of my
family. I was puzzled. I don't know much about adobe block making,
but I learned that morning how not to make adobe blocks.
Yul explained that when he saw the inside of the busted
adobe block he realized they had been very poorly made. He had hired out the work to a teenage boy so
he had not seen them being made. The
teen had not prepared the ingredients of the mud mixture properly which caused
them to be weak. The ingredients must be
stirred so that the dry grass used for adobe breaks up into small pieces and
the dirt becomes a smooth mixture. Inside
this block you could see whole pieces of grass and chunks of unmixed dirt. The youth had taken short cuts in his work.
Yul gave God credit for saving his life and the lives of his
wife and son. He said the house could
have easily fallen on them and killed them had the house been fully constructed
with these faulty adobe bricks. He began
thanking God for caring for him. What
beautiful faith this young man has.
Yul has since taken down the remains of the adobe house and
has begun construction on a block home.
A block home will allow him to build this year as there is not enough
time now to make more adobe bricks and build a home before the rainy season
begins. It costs a little more, but will
give Yul peace of mind and a home for his family.
For those of you who know little about Yul, he is one of our
staff members. He was one of the first
men in the village to volunteer with us When we entered the village
of El Sauce six years ago, He continued to volunteer with us for several
years until we brought him on as a full time employee. He presently serves as Assistant Director of
Operations. Yul became a believer in
2006 and now serves as a minister in the local congregation. Chely, Yul's wife, teaches the Ladies Bible
Class. Yul and Chely have a one year old
son named Jonathan.

 Yul, Chely and Jonathan
Thank you to those of you who sent funds upon learning of the destruction of Yul and Chely's home. We received $450.00. They were surprised and very grateful for your help. They send many thanks to you.

New Pavilion on Church Property

The congregation pulled together to build a pavilion on the new property purchased last year. It was a beautiful picture of hard work and unity as both men and women came together to clean, prepare the property for construction and construct the pavilion.

Felipa takes a break from working on the pavilion to pose for her picture.

Children from the congregation sat on the sidelines watching as parents worked in unity over a two week span. What a beautiful picture of excitement and cooperation. The congregation is now meeting in the pavilion and finally have enough room for all the members in meet in one place. Click on the picture below to see a panoramic view of the property and pavilion.

Success against Malnutrition in El Sauce

I first saw Keidy when she was 12 months old. Her mother had brought her to me because Keidy's skin was darkening and peeling off. Both of her hands, feet and legs were swollen and she was weak. Keidy was suffering from a form of malnutrition called Kwashiorkor. This form of malnutrition is more serious than other forms of malnutrition and has a higher death rate. With this form the patient might even appear overweight due to swelling rather than fat (edema). The mother may not recognize that her child is malnourished since the child does not look skinny. This was the case with Keidy.
When I first met Keidy she could not sit unassisted more than a few minutes. Her mother held her in her arms and Keidy showed no interest in anything around her.

When we made our first visit to Keidy's home, we found her older brother Anderson and her older sister Yosselin both suffering from malnutrition but they were not as severe as Keidy.
We learned that Keidy had been replaced at her mothers breast by a new little brother. She did not have an appropriate time of transition to solid foods and drinking from a cup or bottle so she was not eating much of anything.

This past Wednesday, three months after Armor of Hope intervened with nutritional counseling and treatment, Keidy reached the lowest rung of the normal range for her weight. It was a battle but Keidy's mom was determined to see her baby girl well again. Keidy still needs to gain a little more weight, but she is stronger and is walking, babbling and laughing like babies should at her age. Anderson also has entered the normal weight range for his age. Yosselin struggles to put on weight due to a lack of interest in food. She gains slowly, but has yet to reach the normal range. Please pray for all our little ones that continue to suffer from malnutrition--something unknown to most of us.

UPDATE ON JOSE

This past Wednesday (weigh-in day for the children we are presently serving) Jose finally has gained some weight. His weight gain moved him form the very low weight category to the low weight category. Jose still has a way to go but this is progress. Praise God! If you don't know Jose's story, you can check it out here.

Hungry Children--The Face of Malnutrition in EL Sauce

Jose turned one year old this month. He doesn't smile, he cannot sit up for extended time without assistance, he doesn't crawl, pull himself up on furniture or babble. Worst of all, Jose has lost the desire to eat. Only 30 minutes after the video below of Jose was taken (at the end of November), he was found unconscious by his mother.

click on photo to play video

If you experience problems viewing the video follow this link to view: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yACTDqr4Qtsandfeature=youtu.be

Jose has Malnutrition. One of the complications of malnutrition is dehydration. We rushed Jose to the hospital. At the public hospital he was given IV fluids for 24 hours and sent out. His malnutrition being left treated.

Jose's mother nurses Jose at her dry breast to comfort him, but there is no nourishment for him. Jose is too weak to nurse properly so his mother's body no longer is stimulated to make milk. This, along with his mothers poor nutrition, has brought Jose to this severe point of malnutrition.

Armor of Hope is now intervening in an attempt to save Jose's life. Some of our prayer supporters have been praying for Jose. Will you please join in prayer on Jose's behalf? At the time of this writing, Jose is still being force fed with a medicine dropper. His little weight gain has not brought him above the very low weight mark.

In our next report we would like to highlight the good news that nutrition intervention can do to help a family. Watch for our story about Keidy, Yosselin and Anderson.

Muddy Worship--A Lesson in Devotion

Thursday evenings the congregation in El Sauce gets together for a time of worship and Bible study. Last night was no different...well actually it was. Last night there were only 12 people who could make it to the assembly. The mud was very deep all over the village and the electric was out. The pavilion under which the congregation meets was dark and deep in mud. So what was the report from the congregation last evening?

It was one of the best worship service ever!

I thought about this after I hung up from the phone call. Why would it not be the best worship? It was a worship to God that required the sacrifice of worldly comfort. It was cold (by Honduran standards), wet, dark and muddy. I think Paul and Silas possibly could relate when they were in a dark, damp, cold prison as they sang praises to God. Maybe there really is something to sacrificial worship, but then again, hasn't that idea been discussed throughout scripture? Maybe seeing this put into real life practice helps me pay attention a little closer. Praise God for my brothers and sisters in the village of El Sauce for teaching me a little more about sacrificial worship. I guess the question now is: How much will I sacrifice to worship God with the Saints?

I Spoke Too Soon

Two days ago I sent a report concerning flooding throughout Honduras. I have been in contact with a few folks from different areas an am learning the rain is letting up in some areas, but not in others. If you have not read this report you can see the archive which contains photos of some of the damage at this link (Be sure to scroll down if you do not see the report.)

I spoke to team member Yul Brinner this morning for an update. He has reported that the stream about 1/10 of a mile from our property has swollen to the point the the villages on the other side cannot pass and that two pick-up trucks have been carried away while trying to cross it. This stream crosses the road that connects people to the town. They cannot pass to get supplies until the waters recede.

I had reported that the ministry center had not received any flood damage in the last newsletter. Seems I spoke too soon. As of yesterday the ministry center dormitory has sustain significant flooding over the last 48 hours. According to Yul it is completely flooded and the water is raising, and the rains continue. The clinic has had a very small amount of water in one exam room and the education center remains dry.

Crops are affected but not to the point that was originally reported after closer inspection. While there is some loss there are still crops that are growing.

Please pray the rains will cease for a time so that the country of Honduras can begin the daunting task of clean-up, rebuilding and replanting.

I leave November 1st to work for six weeks in Honduras. Please pray my words and deeds will bring Glory to God--Laura

Flooding in Honduras

Honduras is experiencing dangerous and damaging flooding nationwide. There are reports of at least thirty deaths and that toll may be rising. Seventeen out of the eighteen departments (states) in Honduras have been hard hit and the rains continue.

I spoke to team member Yul Brinner last evening about how this is impacting the villages. Crops have been destroyed and homes are threatened. Homes made of mud and stick are at the biggest risk as the walls begin to be over saturated and crumble.

Last night the congregation was to meet for the first time under their new pavilion. Unfortunately only a handful could make it. The rains have caused the electricity to be out for days now and the church meets at night. Also the concrete floor of the building was to be poured, but due to rain and our vehicle being in the shop for repairs, the floor will have to wait. Meanwhile the mud is deep all over the village.

The ministry center has not suffered any damage so far due to some smart planning on our workers part. When we had a small amount of flooding this past year they came up with some preventative measure to halt or minimize future flooding. While the land itself is a mud pit, inside the ministry center has stayed dry.

Pleas pray for Honduras as a country that they may see the end of this rain very soon so they can start clean-up. Also pray specifically for Sauce and the surrounding villages that they will not have to experience any additional flooding and that they can get crops back in the ground asap. As you may recall most of the population are sustenance farmers so flooding such as this has an extreme impact on their food availability.

Below are some pictures from the nearest town I pulled off one of my Honduran friends Facebook page. These are from Villanueva (the nearest town to El Sauce).

THE EVIL EYE

They call it, "mal de ojo", or "the evil eye." It is the belief that someone has the ability
to cause sickness, tiredness or a curse to fall upon a baby simply by looking
at them in a certain way. Commonly it is
believed that it is people with lighter shades of eyes that have this
power.
Mothers combat the evil eye by putting red beads or cords on
the wrist of their newborn babies. The
superstitions of the evil eye and red beads protecting from the evil eye
are strong throughout Honduras.
We see this as an opportunity to teach about God and his
great power over everything. When young
moms come to us with sick infants who have a red cord on their wrists, we use
this time to teach them that the cord has not protected the baby from this
illness, but we know of something more powerful to protect their baby. At this point they are all ears.
The receptivity of the message is high when a momma is holding a sick baby. We tell them that God is more powerful than
the red cord and that he will reward them if they believe He can protect their
babies. We take the cords off the babies
arms and pray with the moms over their babies.
They hear us asking God to protect and heal their babies and they know
who healed their babies once health returns.
This is simple faith, the kind God rewards. We have had a 100% success rate at removing
the cords from sick babies arms in these situations. We do not have success removing cords from the
arms of babies who are not sick. It is
amazing how a sick child can lead a mother to belief in the power of God, but how strong and ingrained these beliefs are.
Now the rest of the story...
Many of our readers know team member Yul Brinner. You may also know he is one of the ministers
at the church in El Sauce. Yul is
married to Chely. When Chely was
expecting their son I asked Yul and Chely what their intentions were concerning
using a red cord with their baby. Yul
quickly deferred to Chely. It was
obvious both of them were nervous about making a decision concerning this. While Yul had taught others to pitch the red
cord in favor of accepting the power of God, he was now faced with the decision
himself. Its different when its your own
child.
They questioned me to verify that I truly believed this red
cord had no powers of protection or healing.
Finally after a short discussion I told them it came down to this; In whom do you put your trust, God or a red cord?
You cannot have it both ways.

.
That was all it took.
They agreed they would not put the red cord on their baby. It was a step of faith for them, a huge step
as it had been for every parent before them.
What made them different was that their baby was not born yet and they
were not facing a health crisis with their child. Acceptance of God's power to protect their
baby also meant they could stand as an example in the church and in the
community as believers in God's power even over "the evil eye".
Jonaton Yul Rivera Lomas was born healthy and has had not
health problems since his birth. The
example this family has set has since cause two young mothers to make decisions
for God's power over the power of the red cord.
One mother never put the red cord on her baby boy, while the other
removed the cord from her infant son.
The knowledge of the power of God is growing through the faith of young
moms and their babies who God is protecting.
Praise Him through whom all power originates!
