Property Purchased for Church!
The property purchased for the congregation in El Sauce to build a place to worship together. (Unfortunately the camera shutter did not open completely for the photo.)
The Church in El Sauce has been meeting in cramped quarters lately. That's good news because this body of believers is growing! The small adobe house where we have been meeting can no longer accommodate those who come to worship. We have had folks standing out on the porch peering in at times when there is standing room only. The lease on this small home is up in mid October so the church needed another place to meet that could accomodate everyone. They have had their hearts set on someday owning a piece of property that they can call their own and construct a place to meet where they had room for growth.
God has answered that prayer and the church in El Sauce is grateful. While the church worked to raise funds for property they were limited by the financial hardship this village faces. Nevertheless the community and church members gave as they could.
Fortunately they are loved by God and brothers and sisters whom they have never meet. Due to generous donations the bulk of the financial need was supplied and the property was purchased. They send their gratitute to those who so generously gave.
The church plans to construct a temporary pavillion with a grass roof and concrete floor until they draw up plans for a building and consider its costs. We will keep you posted on their progress.
Thank you to Beth Tikkun Messianic Fellowship (Tallmadge, OH), Trevor and Kala Sanders (Mt. Juliet,TN), Faith Baptist Church (Mattawan,MI), The Church of Christ in El Sauce, and members of the community of El Sauce.
Yul and Chely--Married...again
Team member Yul Brinner Rivera and his wife Chely were "married again"! Yul and Chely were married last year at the municipality (Justice of the Peace), but culture here demands a "church wedding" for those serving in public ministry. After working and saving for this event they were able to celebrate their wedding with the church in El Sauce and friends and family on July 30th.
Friends and family came to build a ramada (a temporary pavillion see picture below) the day before and decorated with balloons, paper flowers and plants on the day of the wedding.
About five minutes before the wedding, Chely came and asked me if I knew how to tie a tie. No one present had ever worn a tie and therefore did not know how to tie this strange cloth hanging around Yul's shoulders. I quickly tied the tie just in time to get started.
Then the lights went out! That's pretty usual in the village so no one was annoyed. Yul simply took the battery out of the truck and connected a power inverter that supplied electric to the one light bulb that hung over the minister and the CD player for the music. We hung chemical light sticks around the perimeter of the ramada and continued on.
Half way through Yul and Chely's vows their infant son (Jonaton) began crying. Chely's mom asked if I could try and calm him. I took Jonaton and instructed her to simply push the button on the CD player after the minister pronounced them man and wife. She said she could do that. I took two steps away with the baby when I heard the processional music begin. Oh well...they got to hear the processional twice. Once in the middle of their vows and once at the end.
Most people in El Sauce have never seen a wedding since most couples are not legally married so this was a big event. About 200 people were in attendance. Everyone had a blast and the celebration was grand!
The wedding was a teaching opportunity also. The minister used God's word to teach God's desire for man and woman to be united in marriage. He gave instruction on how men are to treat their wives and how wives are to honor their husbands. He spoke of life commitment and love during all stages of the relationship whether times were good or bad. These were new teachings to many in attendance. We hope there were seeds planted that will bring glory to God in the future.
