Video - Face Wrinkles Linked to Osteoporosis

A close look into a woman's wrinkles may predict her risk for bone fractures, according to new findings by Yale researchers.

The deeper the wrinkles and the softer the skin of post-menopausal women the lower their bones density is likely to be, the study concluded.

The link between the two could be collagen, a type of protein found in both the skin and skeleton, according to Dr. Lubna Pal, a reproductive endocrinologist at Yale School of Medicine. Pal was the lead author of the study which was presented Monday at the Endocrine Society's Annual Meeting in Boston.

"Early menopause is a dynamic phase for both the skeleton and skin," Pal said.

During menopause, the loss in collagen contributes to both wrinkles and lower bone density.

The study looked at 114 women who recently went through menopause. Pal and her colleagues measured the deepness of wrinkles and the toughness of skin in 11 areas on the face and neck. Those with the deeper wrinkles and softer skin had lower bone density than the others in the group.

"The worse the wrinkles, the lesser the bone density, and this relationship was independent of age or of factors known to influence bone mass," said Pal.

The researchers used bone density scans to confirm their findings.

What are Bisphosphonate Side Effects?

Posted by William Eadie

Bisphosphonates are a type of osteoporosis medication that work by interrupting the process of bone degradation. Bone undergoes constant turnover and is kept in balance by osteoblasts--bone cells that create bone--and osteoclasts--bone cells that destroy bone--working at similar rates. Bisphosphonates inhibit the digestion of bone by encouraging osteoclasts to undergo cell death, reducing the rate of bone loss. But certain bisphosphonate side effects associated with long term use of bisphosphonates have altered the risk/benefit analysis doctors must undertake when prescribing the medications, including:

  • Femur fractures
  • Atrial fibrillation (heart arrhythmia)
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ or "dead jaw")

One of the most popular bisphosphonates, Fosamax, has been in the news lately for its apparent association with femur fractures. This long term Fosamax use side effect has been demonstrated in a number of medical studies, including this one by a researcher with financial ties to bisphosphonate products. In 2008, an article in the Journal of Orthopedic Trauma linked problems with Fosamax to a rare type of fracture in the femur. The study looked at 70 patients who experienced low-energy femur fractures, which occur when someone falls from a standing height or less.

Studies seem to suggest that Fosamax long term use creates a greater risk of bisphosphonate side effects like femur fractures, with some studies focusing on use of three years or longer. Because Fosamax long term use was not considered a risk by prescribing physicians, frequently Fosamax users took the drug for many years.

Calcium Supplements May Help with Weight Loss

The results of a new study in Nutrition Reviews qualify for the "every little bit helps" category: calcium supplements may help you lose weight, but only just under 3.5 pounds per year. In addition, daily calcium supplements can result in a loss of about 4 pounds of body fat per year.

Calcium is not just for stronger bones

Over the years, studies regarding the ability of calcium to assist with weight loss have yielded conflicting results, with some research suggesting calcium from dairy foods was helpful while others indicated supplements offered more benefit. Another argument is that calcium in dairy foods plays a minor role in the goal to lose weight.

The new study, which was conducted by researchers from the University of Exeter, evaluated data from seven randomized clinical trials that involved the use of calcium supplements in overweight and obese individuals. All the studies in the meta-analysis lasted at least six months.

Researchers found that calcium supplementation may help people lose about 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds) per year when compared with placebo. Individuals who took 1,000 mg daily of calcium saw a "small, significant reduction in body fat" equalling about 2 kg per year.

According to Igho Onakpoya from the Department of Complementary Medicine, Peninsula Medical School at the University of Exeter, and his colleagues in the study, one possible reason calcium may help promote weight loss could involve a decline in 1,25-vitamin D levels, which stimulates fat metabolism and inhibits the activity of fat cells.

Some literature also notes that a calcium-rich diet may promote fat oxidation, which can result "in the removal of additional amounts of calories from the body." A number of these studies have been supported by the dairy industry, however, and raise the question of conflict of interest.

Overall, the study's authors conclude that "evidence from randomized clinical trials suggests calcium supplementation generates small, statistically significant weight loss in overweight and obese individuals," yet they are not certain what clinical relevance these findings provide. Although calcium supplements may not lead to losing more than few pounds per year, they also do provide an essential mineral for bone and overall health. And when you are trying to lose weight, every little bit counts.
