[Aliventures newsletter] How do you find readers for your blog?

Hello!
It's been a rather chaotic week here: Paul (my husband) was away at the Labour Party Conference; my daughter was recovering from a cold on Monday and insisted she was far too poorly to go to school; our internet went down on Tuesday; after a long time on hold to my ISP, they dispatched me a new router ... to the wrong address ...

I hope your week's gone a little more smoothly!

(Happily, today looks set to be a better day: I now have the router and internet access, Paul is home, the kids are at school / playgroup, my mum is here to help out, and I might actually make some progress on my novella later today. :-))

How do You Find Readers for Your Blog?
This is the fourth and final part in a month-long series about blogging. If you missed any of the previous parts, you can find them here:

One of the biggest struggles that bloggers face is finding readers.

After a lot of hard work, you might have a great-looking blog set up. You're clear about the purpose of your blog and – if you're planning to make money from it – you know how you're going to be be monetizing.

You've written several excellent posts, all on-topic for your intended audience.

And yet ... no-one's reading.

It can be really tough to build up a readership for a blog, especially when you're just starting out. There's plenty of advice out there on getting readers, but it can feel overwhelming or even contradictory.

Three very simple things you can do are:
  • Let your existing network know about your blog. Share the link to your blog with your friends and family on Facebook, or by email. Even if they're not personally interested in your topic, they might well know someone who would be, so encourage them to spread the word.
  • Add a signature to your emails. Assuming you have a personal email account (rather than just one for your day job), you can put anything you like in the signature! I'd suggest including the link to your blog, plus a tagline or brief description of what you blog about. Now, anyone you email will have the opportunity to find out about and visit your blog.
  • Leave thoughtful comments on other people's blogs. While this isn't as effective a strategy as it was in the past, it can still bring in some new readers. Make sure you fill out the "URL" field to include the link to your blog. Commenting on large blogs can be better for bringing new readers to yours, but commenting on smaller blogs is a brilliant way to build up relationships with other bloggers.
