1. A Brief Note from the Editor: A Little Help, Please!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the last edition, I asked readers to please take a few minutes
to respond to 4 quick questions that will help determine how better
to provide value to you in the coming year. Out of hundreds of
readers, we got only a few responses, so I am repeating my request.
Please - it really only takes a few minutes and it is completely
anonymous. I'd be truly grateful. You can find the survey at:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/F2B3D5X
As always, I welcome your feedback, and if you have a colleague
who might be interested in this newsletter, please share it.
Best regards,
Jeff Cobb

2. Learning 2.0 - Next Generation Learning for Associations
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three years ago I put together a Power Point presentation that
would become the basis for Learning 2.0 for Associations, a free
"e-Book" that we released at the beginning of 2008. This brief book
provided a primer on how learning was changing and how Web 2.0
technologies like RSS and social media were spurring the change.
These were somewhat hot topics at the time, but I was nonetheless
very surprised when Learning 2.0 for Associations wound up being
downloaded many thousands of times. Wow - the next generation of
association education was surely right around the corner!
Three years later, in spite of a great deal having changed, I feel
like so many of us are still wrestling to get a grip on "2.0"
concepts and how they impact continuing education and professional
development. With people continuing to download the original
book, I've also felt more and more that I really needed to update
it a bit. So, at last I have done just that and you can download a
free preview copy at:
http://www.tagoras.com/learning20/
We still have some small tweaks and additions to make before we
officially release it next week, but it's basically done, so I
wanted to go ahead and share it with newsletter readers. One of the
main areas I am still working on is updating the resources for
which there are links throughout the book, so if you visit those,
just bare in mind that they will change quite a bit in the coming
days.
As for the arrival of the next generation of association education
- well, I take it as a good sign that the ASAE professional
development council has managed to carve out a "Next Generation
Education" track at the upcoming Great Ideas conference. That and
the many association examples that appear in Learning 2.0 and the
related resource pages make me feel like we are on the verge of
something big.
Stay tuned - I'll report back in another three years.
Jeff

4. Links of Value

As usual, here are a few items I have come across recently that I
thought might be of interest to readers:
Self-paced Learners Meet Social Software: An Exploration of
Learners' Attitudes, Expectations and Experience
http://www.elearnspace.org/blog/2010/09/30/self-paced-learners-meet-social-software-an-exploration-of-learners%E2%80%99-attitudes-expectations-and-experience/
This is a timely post relative to the release of the second edition
of Learning 2.0 for Associations referenced above. In it, George
Siemens points to new research on how learners engaged in
self-paced study do or do not take advantage of social media. Turns
out the findings are rather mixed. Siemens asks the right question:
Is this owing to the usefulness the tools or because of the or the
previous experience level of the learners? You can guess how I
would answer.

Everything you ever needed to get started with Twitter
http://www.socialfish.org/2010/09/everything-you-ever-needed-to-get-started-with-twitter.html
A mere pup, wet behind the ears at the time of the original
Learning 2.0 for Associations, Twitter has emerged as perhaps THE
tools for connecting online and offline learning. So, it seems only
appropriate to point to some good Twitter resources. As it happens,
Maddie recently did a nice little round-up over at Social Fish. The
only thing I would want to add is:

RSA animates Sir Kenneth Robinson
http://www.internettime.com/2010/10/rsa-animates-sir-kenneth-robinson/
And now for something completely different. This video, via Jay
Cross, combines clever animation with the always-captivating
thinking of Ken Robinson. Robinson's talk is focused on K-12
education, but of course, today's elementary students are
tomorrow's professional development customers. It's worth listening
to and reflecting upon what Sir Ken has to say.

An Association E-learning Conversation: The Print Version
http://www.tagoras.com/2010/10/11/association-elearning-behrens-cobb/
Finally, I mentioned in the last digest that we would be putting
together a print version of the conversation that Ellen Behrens and
I recently had about e-learning in the association sector. That's
now available, and if I do say so myself, it turned out quite
nicely. The download is completely free - as in no money or e-mail
address required.

I'll say it again: Sector News is a very easy - and free - way to
spread the word and maybe give your colleagues and peers some new
ideas. That goes for both associations and vendors. If you have
something for next time, send it to me before November 10 at
jcobb@tagoras.com. Why wouldn't you?!
