ANIMA WELLNESS UPDATE

The times they are a'changin'!

April 3, 2012

Dear ,

ANNOUNCING WITH MIXED EMOTION...
It is with mixed emotion that I write to share that I closed my reflexology and massage therapy practice effective March 31.
Working with you and other bodywork clients the last three and half years has been an absolute blessing. Meanwhile, the work of building and managing two businesses simultaneously has proved to be very challenging.
As you may know, I also work as a Professional Organizer. A rapidly expanding industry, the professional organizing work and opportunity continues to abound. I have chosen to focus on that work and that business moving forward.
I do truly believe that organization is a wellness issue and that our bodies, souls, and spirits are affected by the physical, mental, and spiritual clutter that surrounds us. Therefore, I feel that my wellness work continues...now outside the clinic, but inside the home and office settings.

REFERRALS

Over the last couple months, I have been in touch with four women who I believe to be some of the best bodywork professionals on the island of Oahu. All four (one reflexologist and three massage therapists) have agreed to be on my referral list. I have listed information about each one of them at my revised Anima website.

NEWSLETTERS

I will no longer be sending out a regular Anima Wellness newsletter. Therefore, this list will be discontinued within the next week.

However, I invite you to sign on to one or both of the following newsletters if you'd like to continue to hear from me:

Hawaii Wellness - Infrequent updates about food and wellness opportunities in Hawaii

PraiseMoves - Information about a stretching class I will be teaching starting in the fall of 2012 (PraiseMoves - The Christian Alternative to Yoga)

PRAISEMOVES

As mentioned above, I will be teaching a stretching class this coming fall. It is called PraiseMoves and employs various stretching postures set to specific verses of scripture from both the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and Christian Scriptures (New Testament).

If you'd like more information about PraiseMoves, visit the founder's website at www.PraiseMoves.com and sign on to my PraiseMoves newsletter.

PRODUCTS

I still have a limited supply of 100% Pure brand body lotion and body wash products, as well as Badger brand sunscreens and balms. If you liked those all-natural body products I had for sale in the clinic, please email me regarding purchasing the close-out inventory at 30% off retail prices.

Again, it has been such a pleasure...I couldn't have done it without you! Literally!

Here's to your wellness and to a healthy, happy, and ORGANIZED 2012!

With aloha,

Nancy Nino
808-347-4747 (personal cell)

P.S. I will have limited availability for in-home bodywork extended to my Anima Wellness clients only. If you live in East Honolulu and have a massage therapy table in your home (or recliner for reflexology), please contact me if you'd like to arrange for massage therapy or reflexology at home. ($80 per hour/flat fee)

Februrary 6, 2012

Dear ,

Happy Monday!

Have you been thinking about what you're going to do to get SEWN in the new year?
Sleep

Exercise

Water

Nutrition

In today's newsletter, we're going to discuss the exercise peice of the puzzle.

EXERCISE

Last week I did something that will without a doubt improve my physical health in 2012. I made a commitment to a friend.
My friend, Denise, and I agreed to get together three mornings a week to exercise. She comes over at 6:30 a.m. and we do a stretching video. (I was recently certified in this particular stretching program, PraiseMoves and am looking to get plenty of practice prior to starting to teach classes in the late spring or early summer).
Today was our fourth session and we love it. The videos are not intense, and are therefore great for easing back into regular exercise, plus we are already seeing great improvements in our flexibility.
After our sessions, we have a quick and healthy breakfast and chat, and then we're off and running for the day.
It takes anywhere from 60-75 minutes for the entire exercise/breakfast/chat. (You have to eat anyway, right...and why not do it with a friend?!)
We've started small. Eventually, Denise will be walking on her own on our off days and I will start training for the Kauai half marathon which takes place in September.

For me, sustainability is the key. I know that personally an intense baptism-by-fire six day a week training program is not something I will stick with. But stretching with Denise, soon to be complimented by light runs on the off days, feels doable to me.
What is a doable exercise regimen for YOU in 2012?
A few helpful hints as you contemplate that:

Write down your goals

Put the exercise days/times on your calendar as you would for any other appointment

Pick an accountability partner

Plan to do something FUN (Zumba, a bootcamp class, a high-intensity dance class, whatever means FUN to you!)

Join me in a future PraiseMoves stretching class (more details to come)

Sign up to walk (or if you're really ambitious RUN) in the Great Aloha Run on Monday, February 20
*Sign up for the Warrior Dash Mud Run on Saturday, March 24
*Visit active.com to check out other events in our area
Great things are happening in 2012!

Hope you are inspired as I am about all this year has in store for us!
With aloha,

January 16, 2012
Happy New Year! How's that resolution coming along?
Many of the most popular resolutions involve health-related goals, and there's something fresh about a new year that makes it inspiring to take steps towards better health and wellness.
If you haven't yet taken on a New Year's resolution, it's not too late!
Over the next few weeks, I will share a little about four critical components to wellness, including resources and ideas for improving your health in these areas.
Sleep

Exercise

Water

Nutrition
Also known as SEWN ;)

SLEEP

Many medical professionals claim the single most important element in long-term health and overall well-being is sleep. If you suffer from poor sleep, you start your day already at a disadvantage.
Tiredness can lead to irritability, as well as to a tendency to self-treat with caffeine, sugar, or other less-than-ideal substances.
A few years ago when I was having sleep challenges, my cousin introduced me to the End Tiredness Program, an excellent e-book that was not only informative, but also fascinating.
It truly changed the way I understood sleep, not to mention helped resolve my sleep issues.
Check out the End Tiredness Program, if you have sleep challenges, or just want to learn how to optimize your current sleeping patterns.
Wishing you a RESTFUL week!

November 10, 2011

Dear ,

Last month, a number of my family members in California participated in a Warrior Dash. What is a Warrior Dash, you ask?

According to the Warrior Dash web site, the Warrior Dash is a mud-crawling, fire-leaping extreme run from hell. This fierce running series is held on the most challenging and rugged terrain across the globe. Warriors conquer extreme obstacles, push their limits, and celebrate with kick-ass music, beer, and warrior helmets.

And guess what...you have a little over four months to train if you're interested as this three mile Warrior Dash is coming to Hawaii on March 24, 2012.

What a great motivation for training in the New Year! You've got the Great Aloha Run in February, followed up by the Warrior Dash in March.

Regretfully, I will be out of town for the Hawaii Dash, but I am really excited they have included us in their multi-city Warrior Dash tour...and let's be honest, I'm a fan of beer (in moderation, of course)! :)

I am currently working with a personal trainer (Jon from 24 Hour Fitness Hawaii Kai...he rocks!) and am reminded again of the importance of consistent and vigorous exercise. The cardio, strength, flexibility, AND pyschological benefits cannot be underestimated.

So Warrior up, Honolulu! Whatever you choose to do, whether the Warrior Dash, a daily walk, or a stretching class, DO SOMETHING!

Your body (and your mind and spirit) will thank you!

October 31, 2011

Dear ,

I write a lot about food and wellness topics because I find them fascinating. I like food. I like wellness. And I want to share that passion with you.

That being said, what you put in your mouth and how you treat your body is your own business. It's personal. I have no place in those decisions.

I do hope, however, to share with you information which may inform those decisions, hopefully in a positive way.

Following up on last week's newsletter, I'd like to share a little more about the topic of organic farming and foods.

I have included below some basic information on the topic by one of my favorite natural health gurus, Dr. Joe Mercola.

Organic farming differs from conventional farming in the methods used to grow crops. Where traditional farmers apply chemical fertilizers to the soil to grow their crops, organic farmers feed and build soil with natural fertilizer. Traditional farmers use insecticides to get rid of insects and disease, while organic farmers use natural methods such as insect predators and barriers for this purpose. Traditional farmers control weed growth by applying synthetic herbicides, but organic farmers use crop rotation, tillage, hand weeding, cover crops and mulches to control weeds.

The result is that conventionally grown food is often tainted with chemical residues, which can be harmful to humans. There is debate over whether dietary exposure to pesticides at levels typically found on food is dangerous, but experts say that consumers should use caution. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 60 percent of herbicides, 90 percent of fungicides and 30 percent of insecticides to be carcinogenic.

Pesticides can have many negative influences on health, including neurotoxicity, disruption of the endocrine system, carcinogenicity and immune system suppression. Pesticide exposure may also affect male reproductive function and has been linked to miscarriages in women.

Aside from pesticide contamination, conventional produce tends to have fewer nutrients than organic produce. On average, conventional produce has only 83 percent of the nutrients of organic produce. Studies have found significantly higher levels of nutrients such as vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus, and significantly less nitrates (a toxin) in organic crops.

Please understand that it is better to eat non-organic vegetables than no vegetables at all.

In the same vein, it is also important to realize that fresh non-organic vegetables will be better than wilted and rotten organic vegetables that are occasionally the only ones available in smaller organic produce stands. There are many highly perishable nutrients that degrade with time and exposure to air and ultraviolet radiation. If the organic vegetables are seriously damaged then it would be far wiser to eat fresh, undamaged non-organic vegetables.

Enjoy the week and thanks for reading! If you have any feedback, I'd love to hear it.

October 25, 2011

Dear ,

Native Americans share with Native Hawaiians a mutual respect, indeed, a reverence, for the land, the aina.

The Constitution of the Iroquois Nations: The Great Binding Law reads:

In all of your deliberations in the Confederate Council, in your efforts at law making, in all your official acts, self interest shall be cast into oblivion. Cast not over your shoulder behind you the warnings of the nephews and nieces should they chide you for any error or wrong you may do, but return to the way of the Great Law which is just and right. Look and listen for the welfare of the whole people and have always in view not only the present but also the coming generations, even those whose faces are yet beneath the surface of the ground - the unborn of the future Nation.

The Iroquois made decisions taking into account the effects on the next seven generations: the impact on the people and the impact on the land and environment.

While in the last century we have made great advances in commercial food production, in that process, we have also introduced into the soil and into the food chain substances that could have a long-term and potentially ill-effect on our food, our bodies, and our land.

We simply don't yet know what the effects will be.

What we do know, however, is that in a study by the Environmental Working Group, 232 toxic chemicals were found in the cord blood of new born babies.

There are consequences of industrialized and commercialized society, both good and bad.

There are some things we can control and some things we cannot.

At this time, we cannot personally control the quality of the air we breathe, the chemical residues in our soils, or the amount of electromagnetic radiation that surrounds us.

But what we can control is the quality of food we put into our mouths.

In the way of the Iroquois, we can support local organic farmers who are creating food that honors the body and honors the land.

More on organic next week...

In the meantime, malama i ka aina! (Take care of the land!)Nancy Nino, LMT #10975

Dear ,

My long time client, Kyle, put me to the test last month. I had suggested that in between our monthly reflexology sessions, he perform self-reflexology by rolling his feet back and forth over a golf ball daily.

He came in for his session and announced...Ok, I did the golf ball thing...on just one foot. You tell me which one!

I have to admit I was a little nervous...what if I picked the wrong foot and looked stupid?

However, the results were so dramatic, it was obvious which foot he test the technique on. His left foot felt incredible, very little congestion and tightness. His right, on the other hand, had the ususal congestion (crunchies) that I see in most feet, even on those clients who come monthly.

I strongly urge you to try out the golf ball technique yourself. Keep a golf ball on your living room end table (or bedside table), and roll back and forth over it while you're watching your favorite show. Roll it back and forth in your hands as well!

Like Kyle, you will notice a difference.

Check out below for a three minute video on the Golf Ball Technique!

Also, here's quick article on the golf ball technique by well-known reflexologists Barbara and Kevin Kunz.

Happy reflexologizing!

September 20, 2011

Dear ,

Actually, I don't have a husband! But the subject of this week's email is the first line of a recent article in Real Simple (yes...it's one of my favorite magazines) which deals with the subject of silence and its relationship to our health.

The writer follows up with, Or so I learned last year, when I bought a jar of earplugs and found out that I could pay for them with my flexible-spending account. According to medical experts, nighttime quiet is as important to my well-being as wearing eyeglasses or getting my daily vitamins, and even low-level noise prevents deep, restorative rest.

The full article is a bit long, but definitely worth the read.

The ever-increasing noise of today's world is a detriment to our wellness. But since we can't control the world, we need to find ways to control how we deal with it.

One way is by carving out times of silence (or near silence) when we can recharge, meditate, pray, and just settle ourselves.

Even five minutes of quiet time can recharge us in amazing ways.

Here's to you closing this email, turning off your phone/computer, and taking five!

September 14, 2011

Dear ,

In HMSA's Summer 2011 Island Scene magazine, Ryan Namba shares his experience of taking on Kanu Hawaii's Eat Local Challenge last year. The challenge encourages Hawaii residents to eat only local food for one week.

Ryan recounts the challenges (and benefits) of eating local, and what he learned through the process.

Kanu Hawaii, the local organization dedicated to protecting and promoting island living which sponsors the annual challenge, outlines the benefits of eating local:

*Security-Strengthening local agriculuture which will fortify our islands in the event of a natural disaster or epidemic which may preclude our access to imported food (currently 90% of our food)

*Sustainability-Eating local helps keep (imported) pests out and cuts waste and pollution

*Health-Eating locally grown food can mean eating healthier because more of the foods are fresh and unprocessed.

*Island Values-Eating local is an expression of island values: health, compassion, stewardship, and self-reliance.

Building on the successes of the past two years, the Kanu Hawaii Eat Local Challenge is expanding from one week to the entire month of September. The month features weekly mini-challenges:

Week 1: Education: Learn about Hawai'i's local food system

Week 2: Grow your own: Plant/harvest local foods at home and in the community

Week 3: Choose local: Find local food at restaurants and markets

Week 4: Eat strictly local: Strive to eat only locally grown foods for one week

Visit Kanu Hawaii's site for more info.

For all the wonderful reasons to eat local, to be frank, the one that most inspires me is the taste...you can, indeed, taste, the difference of produce grown here versus that which sits on a boat for days.

Hope you will join me in efforts to support local farmers and eat local foods this month.

Malama i ka aina!
