ART TIP #122--Watercolor Pencils

People are fascinated with these handy tools...they allow you to work on the spot while traveling, do quick sketches, or create whole paintings back in your studio.
Use just one pencil, or a whole rainbow of colors. Wet on the spot to blend for fast sketching, or build up layers...

You'll find lots of ideas in Tip #122 on my website as usual; click the Art Tips link at upper left, or go directly to http://www.cathyjohnson.info/tips.html

And remember, past tips are archived on the right of every tip--you can find ideas on 120 subjects now, including our earlier explorations of watercolor pencils!

* If you know someone who might be interested in ALL our offerings, feel free to share signup info for this newsletter or forward this email! The signup form's on my website, too...address in the sidebar at right.

Tip # 123 will be on Ink Pen Comparisons...watch for it!

And in other news...

AWeber, which brings you this newsletter, has redesigned how you use a template--but unfortunately, I'm not sure yet how to use it, so for this month we're still on the old tried-and-true!

I'm a bit behind on my upcoming Quick Sketching in Color mini-class...so if you're waiting for it, it's coming, I promise!

Spring has gotten to me this year, and I'm gardening again...MY, that takes a lot of time and energy! Our trees have grown up so much that we're doing container gardens in the patches of sun. I'll probably be sketching the results...

A friend has been here painting the trim on our house, so that's kept us occupied too...but then you know by now that these newsletters come out as I get time.

And if you're new since last time...we've gotten almost 100 new subscribers!--WELCOME. I hope you enjoy the tip and this newsletter!

NEWS FROM the ARTIST'S JOURNAL WORKSHOP BLOG

I recently added a new feature to our blog to make it even more useful to all of us! Blogger lets us create Pages just below the header, and since people often ask what books inspire us or what art supplies we like, I added a couple of new catalogs through Amazon. (Since they are Javascript, please be patient, it may take a moment or so to open up.)

Note: If you buy anything at all while on one of our links, we get a small commission (just over 6%) to help fund the blogs and the continued reviews of art supplies, since we don't have sponsors or take payment for our reviews so you know they're objective and honest. And if you have problems with anything we've included, please let us know and we'll check it out.*

Interview #19 will be up shortly, with the wonderfully talented and inspiring Pat Southern-Pierce. Watch for it!

If there's something you'd like to see discussed, please let us know--and don't miss the poll in the sidebar at right! That's a great way to let us know what you want to see--as always, we have

new interviews, new product reviews, new classes, all right here:

 http://artistsjournalworkshop.blogspot.com/

--please join us! Bookmark the site, follow the blog, share it with friends, but do be sure to visit to see what the buzz is about!
We also have a very active Facebook group and a Flick group you may want to join, if you're a journal keeper--you'll find it here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/artists-journal-workshop/ another addition to our group Artist's Journal Workshop blog .

*(I added a similar catalog that benefits the programs and workshops at Urban Sketchers blog, too...check it out at http://www.urbansketchers.org/ )

I've been working more on on my Etsy shop, Cathy Johnson Art and More, offering original art, prints, demos, sculpture and handmade jewelry--I'll even have some of my how-to CDs and art supplies. I hope you'll visit me there!

The plein air painting above is of an old dairy farm where I used to buy my milk, back in the '70s, and sit at the kitchen table sharing tea and tales with the farm wife. Wonderful memories, for me.

Drop by any time, ask a question, start a conversation--I'll be adding more goodies often. And add me to your circles, if you like--I'll be happy to return the favor, I love Etsy!

ART TIP #121--Quick Sketching Techniques!

We're all busy, and most of us long for a way to make more art. If you can't literally make more hours in the day, you CAN find ways to make use of the time you have, and hone your skills by learning to work fast!

You'll keep your hand-eye coordination in fighting trim, your skills will improve drastically, and you'll find you've accomplished far more than you ever imagined you could.

You'll find lots of ideas in Tip #121 on my website as usual; click the Art Tips link at upper left, or go directly to http://www.cathyjohnson.info/tips.html

And remember, past tips are archived on the right of every tip--you can find ideas on 120 subjects now!

* If you know someone who might be interested in ALL our offerings, feel free to share signup info for this newsletter or forward this email! The signup form's on my website, too...address in the sidebar at right.

Tip # 122 will be on watercolor pencils...there's always a lot of interest in that medium, so be sure to watch for it.

And in other news...

We've gotten even more new subscribers lately--7 just TODAY, so welcome, all!

I just finished the big free Strathmore workshop (and that may be where some of our new subscribers have come from), and it seems to have gone very well!

There was a wonderful group of people involved, very talented and supportive. So thank you Strathmore, and thank you students!

I had over 2800 students...I'm not there on a regular basis any more, but the lessons, videos and forum will be up until August 1! Even if you weren't there for the main class, you can still take part.

You can check them out here: http://www.strathmoreartiststudio.com/
and while you're there, sign up for Mike Matessi's Force Drawing, which starts May 1. Looks like a good one.

NEWSLETTER UPDATE

I'm thinking of redesigning this newsletter to make it more streamlined and easier to navigate. I promise not to put white text on a dark background, I know some people find that hard to read, but other than that...well, we'll see! There are lots of templates to work with...

ANOTHER NEW VIDEO on YOUTUBE

In answer to questions that came up in the class, I made a video on Watercolor Brushes and Waterbrushes that you may enjoy. It's on my YouTube channel, here: http://youtu.be/2uDM19TCPdI

There's lots more on my YouTube Channel, though--check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/user/KateJosTube. You'll find videos old and new--and the Strathmore videos will be there after August 1, too.

I'm still learning a lot about video editing and exploring...it's fun, if a bit challenging at times! Lots more planned for the future.

---------------------------------
SPEAKING OF WATERCOLOR BRUSHES

I did a post on relative sizing of round brushes on our group blog, Artist's Journal Workshop...you can find it here: http://artistsjournalworkshop.blogspot.com/2012/04/its-all-relativebrush-sizes-that-is.html

Notice in the image above, the 12 is just a bit smaller thank the 8 in a different brand...LOTS of revelations in this post!

---------------------------------------------

READY FOR SOME INSPIRATION??

Alvaro Castagnet's watercolor demos on YouTube are marvelous! This is the one I found first...it's fun and intimate. You feel as if you're right there watching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgVpJ6lLV0U

------------------------------------

INSPIRATION ON ETSY, TOO!

Did you know that Etsy offers instructions in their How-to Tuesday series? Our friend and fellow Urban Sketcher Veronica Lawlor did one recently--it's still up for your enjoyment!

You can find it here: http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2012/how-tuesday-landmark-monoprints/
--and now I'm itching to try a monoprint!

Our friend Marc Taro Holmes offers gorgeous prints on Etsy...his watercolors are stunning. I'm the delighted owner of one of his prints, myself! Check out his fresh, juicy watercolor technique here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/citizensketcher

---------------------------------

AND SPEAKING OF ETSY...

My newish shop got off to a great start, and then I got all busy with the Strathmore class and all the preparations!

So now I'm back working on it, offering original art, prints, demos, sculpture and handmade jewelry. I hope you'll visit me there! Drop by Cathy Johnson Art and More, any time--I'll be adding more goodies soon. And add me to your circles, if you like!

ART TIP #120--Working on Toned Paper

Well my GOODNESS, it has been awhile since I had time to do an art tip!

This time, it's working on toned paper, a technique popular with the Old Masters--and new, as well. It's a terrific sketching tool, and amazingly versatile. Work loose or use lots of detail, just use two tools or everything in your creative arsenal--you'll enjoy giving this a try!

You'll find this latest tip on my website as usual; click the Art Tips link at upper left, or go directly to http://www.cathyjohnson.info/tips.html

And remember, past tips are archived on the right of every tip--you can find ideas on 120 subjects now!

* If you know someone who might be interested in ALL our offerings, feel free to share signup info for this newsletter or forward this email! The signup form's on my website, too...address in the sidebar at right.

And in other news...

We've gotten quite a few new subscribers since our last newsletter in late November! (Can it REALLY have been that long??)

It's been terrifically busy here, working on the Strathmore workshop, which just started March 1, but more to the point, the hard drive on my 2-year-old computer crashed, I had to buy a new one, and we were pretty nervous till Jordan at ListITTlc.com finally rescued my information. (If you run into a similar problem I definitely recommend Jordan's company--you can find him here: https://www.facebook.com/listitllc)

We've been working to get everything back to where we were when the crash happened, but unfortunately I lost all the saved links I normally put in this newsletter, so we'll be a bit shorter than usual this time, sorry!

MY FREE STRATHMORE WORKSHOP just started! (And it's not too late to sign up.)

There are four weekly lessons and 8 videos in all--so far response has been amazing! It will focus on watercolor sketching, but also covers mixed media and journaling.

There's even a Flickr group to share your work, if you prefer that to the Strathmore gallery, which covers ALL the workshops, including last year's. The address is in the class materials--I hope you'll join us!

http://www.strathmoreartist.com/workshop-reg.html

A NEW VIDEO on YOUTUBE

This one's A Back Alley Plein Air on painting on the spot--LITERALLY in my alley. Here's the direct link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXeMeDz8F8o It was done early last fall...with more to come soon, I hope.

There's lots more on my YouTube Channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/KateJosTube, old and new. I'm learning a lot about video editing and exploring...fun!

---------------------------------THE ART OF URBAN SKETCHING

If you're a fan of urban sketching and the Urban Sketchers blog, where I'm a correspondent from the Midwest, you'll LOVE founder Gabi Campanario's new book!

I was fortunate enough to be one of many artists worldwide to take part in this huge project, and I just keep reading it and poring over the amazing sketches.

You can find it HERE, as well as in bookstores everywhere.

-------------------

AND SPEAKING OF URBAN SKETCHING

My part of the country is sometimes referred to as fly-over country--the Midwest. But there are some exciting , vital, and beautiful cities and towns in the middle of the country. So--as I often do when I perceive a need, I decided to FIX it. With Gabi's help and some wonderful Midwestern sketchers (with more to come, I hope!) we launched Urban Sketchers Midwest!

You'll find it here: http://urbansketchers-midwest.blogspot.com/
--the blog is invitation only, but we're always looking for new members.

If you're an urban sketcher and you live in the Midwest, join us on Flickr, here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/urban-sketchers-midwest/ or on our Facebook page, here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/291703234226829/

Sketchbook exhibit 2007

A vast range of styles and types...what an inspiration, including our friend Enrique Flores! (I love Stefano Faravelli's nature sketches on the last page of these images...)

Here are a variety of images from a sketchbook exhibit at the 18th
edition of the cultural fair Galassia Gutenberg (Stazione Marittima,
Naples, March 2007), curated by Urban Sketcher Simonetta Capecchi. It included works
of Giorgio Maria Griffa, Ferruccio Orioli, Franco Lancio, Christophe
Verdier, and Enrique Flores.

The exhibition included also a section
entitled Extranapoli, where more than 40 Moleskines were distributed
to travellers of all ages, with a view to recounting the City of Naples.www.galassia.org/

ART TIP #118 Pen and Ink

You'll find this latest tip on my website as usual; click the Art Tips link at upper left, or go directly to http://www.cathyjohnson.info/tips.html

This is a wide-open subject, what with all kinds of pens and inks available now--technical pens, fiber-tipped, roller-ball, fountain pens, dip pens, calligraphy pens, you name it! Not to mention all the new inks on the market, both waterproof and water soluble. You can get a wide variety of effects, from tightly controlled, delicate drawings to splashy, energetic sketches.

So check it out, and play with your own pens to see what works best for you.
Tip #119 will be Ink and Wash--a handy technique for journal, travel, or urban sketching! Judging from the enthusiastic participation in our Flickr group, Ink and Watercolor Wash, with nearly 1000 members, lots of you enjoy it too. NEW TRAVEL JOURNAL!

If you love artists' travel journals as I do, you'll love Richard Sheppard's The Artist on the Road; Impressions of Greece. Not only is the artwork fresh and exciting, but it's a fun read, as well. You feel as if you're madly sketching those temples before a rain, searching for a place to stay, enjoying luscious Greek food, right along with the artist and his father.

Richard's next book will be travels by bicycle in California's wine country, where he makes his home. I can't wait!

You'll find the book on Amazon and in my store, Cathy Johnson's Books and More (along with lots of other fabulous books of artists' travels and other subjects), his inspiring Flickr sketches HERE, and his blog here: http://www.theartistontheroad.com/

Don't miss it!

ART TIP #117--Study Nature Through Art!

This subject is close to my heart...some of you may know that I've also written several natural history books and illustrated others. I was Staff Naturalist at Country Living Magazine for 11 years, and was invited to speak on Sketching and Painting from Nature at the Sierra Club's first international gathering, in 2005. I recently made a CD expanded from that program, with the Sierra Club's kind encouragement...you can see it below.

So this tip offers ideas on how to learn more about our environment from our own field guide illustrations! I hope you enjoy it.

You'll find this latest tip on my website as usual; click the Art Tips link at upper left, or go directly to http://www.cathyjohnson.info/tips.html

Feedback is always welcome--tell us YOUR plans and ideas!
Tip #118 will be Pen and Ink!

* If you know someone you think might be interested in ALL our offerings, feel free to share signup info for this newsletter or forward this email! The signup form's on my website, too...

And in other news...

I apologize! This past month or so really got away from me, what with working on a new mini-class, starting up the new Facebook group (it is ACTIVE). and keeping up with my blogs (sort of!)--and that meant we haven't had an art tip in way too long.

The good news is that I've been saving up links and news for you all this time, too, so this is an extra-rich newsletter!

We've gotten lots of new subscribers since last time, and I'd like to give you all a very warm welcome! I hope you enjoy the tips as well as this newsletter, where we include all kinds of NEW information as well as updates on ongoing projects or sites. Have fun, and let me know what you'd like to see or share!

-------------------------------------

NOODLER'S NEW FLEX PEN

I'm always on the lookout for a nice fountain pen that has some flex to it for thick and thin lines, but doesn't cost the earth so I'm not afraid to take it on the road with me. Noodler's new flex pen does a pretty good job of that, and for $14 thereabouts, it's a bargain. You can read more about it here. http://artistsjournalworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/06/noodlers-flex-pen.html

I do find them a bit temperamental, needing some tweaking rather than starting right up even after weeks of neglect like my Namiki Falcon does...but then I'm afraid to take it WITH me, so the Noodler's is worth the trouble.

ART TIP #116--A Studio in a Backpack!

This one was really fun for me to do, since I worked that way for years, and STILL do when traveling or doing demos. I've got my backpack studio down to an art--pun intended!

It changes, as my needs do...as I've gotten older, I find I need less...but like most of us, I'm beguiled by some new art supply, be it a lightweight palette, a new work surface, or a new color of paint. I hope tip #116 will help you zero in on what YOU will want to keep and use--and discover that you really can get almost everything you need into one pack, satchel, or purse.

(Mind you, not necessarily all you WANT--just all you need!)

You'll find this latest tip on my website as usual; click the Art Tips link at upper left, or go directly to http://www.cathyjohnson.info/tips.html

Feedback is always welcome--tell us YOUR plans and ideas!
Tip #117 will be studying nature through art!

* If you know someone you think might be interested in ALL our offerings, feel free to share signup info for this newsletter or forward this email! The signup form's on my website, too...

And in other news...

THE BOOK IS NOW OUT (at last!), and getting fantastic reviews! If you would like a signed copy, it's available on my website; unsigned, you can get it through North Light Books, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and hopefully, your local brick and mortar bookstore!

BIG Cafe Press Store Changes

Cafe Press has announced they'll no longer make CDs available after July 30, and since that's my biggest seller, I'll be closing my store there.

The GOOD news is that we've decided to produce them ourselves, with complete quality control. No more blank CDs, which was becoming an increasing problem with CafePress!

I've got two NEW CDs out, so please visit my website catalog and check them out!

Unfortunately that also means that the artist aprons, mugs, messenger bags, cards and such won't be available any more, so if there's anything you wanted, please order from CafePress before the end of the month!

MEET SARAH WIMPERIS

if you haven't already! I've followed Sarah's work for years; she manages to capture something so special about the English countryside--I feel as if I'm right there with her. I guarantee you'll learn something from her work and words!

Look for her Muddy Red Shoes HERE: http://www.muddyredshoes.blogspot.com/

FOUR ARTISTS PAINT PROVENCE

And speaking of Sarah, she just returned from a wonderful painting trip to Provence with three of my other favorite artists--Ronelle Van Wyk, Katherine Tyrrell, and Robyn Sinclair.

Storms, loss of electricity, no Internet for a period of time and other adventures didn't stop our four friends from producing wonderful work and sharing it with the world on their group blog, Four Artists Go Painting in Provence. http://paintingprovence.blogspot.com/

You'll know Katherine, most probably, from her wonderful pages we've featured before--Making a Mark is found here: http://makingamark.blogspot.com/ and you can get to her other offerings from there. Don't miss Travels with a Sketchbook!

Robyn's art blog is called Have Dogs, Will Travel, and I'm betting you'll want to follow it. Robyn works mainly in watercolor and gouache...which of course I love since I do too! http://havedogswilltravel.blogspot.com/

And finally my friend Ronelle, who does wonderful, energetic paintings that make you want to sing. Her main blog is African Tapestry, http://africantapestry.wordpress.com/, but don't miss My French Kitchen or her inspiring story of reclaiming an old French barn in the country as a home away from home, Coin Perdu, a Mountain Home. It's here: http://lecoinperdu.wordpress.com/

Go to Provence with these four lovely artists...it's ALMOST like being there.

LOVE TO SEE ARTIST VIDEOS?

Do you like urban sketching? Then you'll love Urban Sketchers' new video spot, here: http://vimeo.com/channels/208503 There will be more added all the time, so check back!

NEWS FROM the ARTIST'S JOURNAL WORKSHOP BLOG

As many of you old-timers know, we have a group blog with the work and words of the artists who are included in my new North Light book, above.

The blog is a wonderful place for sharing the work of these generous, talented people. You'll find it here: http://artistsjournalworkshop.blogspot.com/

We have a poll on the blog in the sidebar at right--tell us what you want to see, and we'll try to come up with some posts addressing that!
One of our readers asked if we could do a roundup and answer some of her questions on fountain pens, so I asked Laure and Nina Johansson for their input. You'll find it HERE.

Interview #12 was with Laure Ferlita, the creative driving force behind the wildly popular Imaginary Trips! Laure's planning an in-person workshop this fall to New Orleans, Louisiana, too--so I know you'll enjoy this interview!

You can find the group blog HERE. http://artistsjournalworkshop.blogspot.com/ --please join us! Bookmark the site, follow the blog, share it with friends, but do be sure to visit to see what the buzz is about!

AND SPEAKING OF ARTIST'S JOURNAL WORKSHOP...

The new Facebook group has grown by leaps and bounds since our last newslatter, and has some wonderful people involved. Please JOIN us!

The parent blog features the work and words of the wonderful artists who made working on the book such an enriching experience--once we've had all the interviews I'll do an occasional guest interview there, but I hope to maintain our cohesive group going forward with journaling.

The Facebook group is open to all! I've learned a lot myself, and enjoy the give and take with other artists and journal keepers. Join us, post your journaling work, ask questions, create an album--we'll be glad to see you!

If you're on Facebook and the link above doesn't work immediately, just type Artist's Journal Workshop into the search window, and it will go right to it. Ask to join, we'll be happy to have you.

LIZ and BORROMINI visit the US and UK!

Our friend Liz Steel and her intrepid friend Borromini Bear have at last made their journals into a book so we can travel along on their amazing journey.

Liz and the bear made a stop-off in Kansas City so our friends Vicky Williamson and Jeanette Sclar got to meet up with her on two different days and go out sketching. FUN. And now you can see ALL of Liz's US and UP sketches here--http://www.lizsteel.com/p/big-trip-2010-sketchbooks.html

And of course on to Italy and back home, in Vol. 2...

Hi all!

This is not our usual art tip newsletter with all the links--it's coming very soon, I promise!

But for those of you who have been longtime, loyal supporters of my Cafe Press store (and for new buyers, too!) I just needed to let you know about the big changes at Cafe Press.

I've been working hard to produce two new slideshow CDs, the long-promised Elements of Landscape, Vol. I, Trees, and the greatly expanded Sketching and Painting in Nature, from my talk to the Sierra Summit in San Francisco in 2005. I finally finished them...and found I couldn't have them made at Cafe Press, as of July 1!

On July 30, Cafe Press will stop making CDs and remove all CDs from existing stores. Since those have been our MOST popular offering, selling literally hundreds from the site, we will be closing the store at http://www.cafepress.com/cathy_johnson at that time.

If there is anything you'd like to order before July 30--CDs, of course, but also mugs, cards, t-shirts, clocks, artist's studio aprons, or any of the dozens of other offerings, please do before the 30th! I've put literally dozens of items on sale...browse the store all you like. Who could resist this face?

The GOOD news is that the CDs will still be available on my website catalog, HERE: http://www.cathyjohnson.info/catalog.html. My husband, business partner and knight, Joseph will be producing them in-house, so we have COMPLETE quality control. He's wanted to do that for years, but I am not great with change, and CafePress was working...mostly.

So! As I say, this week the two new CDs will go up in my website catalog, along with the rest of the existing tutorial and resource CD offerings.

The bad news is that the mugs, t-shirts, messenger bags and so forth WON'T be available there. Eventually we hope to get bestsellers up in a Zazzle shop or somewhere, but...too much on our plates at the moment. So if there's something you wanted and were waiting to buy, now's the time!
Meanwhile, again, thank you so much for all your past support and goodwill! We're still here, and when the dust settles, my goodies will be, too...

Best--
Kate (Cathy Johnson)

ART TIP #115--A Studio Alternative - claim and define a space you already have

This is what many of us deal with, out of necessity...as you saw last time, I was FINALLY able to build a separate space, last year, but I'm old enough to remember the taste of pterodactyl burgers (and miss them!)--I worked for years in a variety of places, by necessity.

And it worked just fine! I know it does for many others...all it takes is some flexibility and imagination, something artists usually have an abundance of anyway.

So we've shared space- and money-saving ideas on how and where, and even some ideas on adapting free or found accessories for your studio-in-the-home. (Or car, if need be!)

One wonderful artists I knew worked on a corner of her kitchen island, using a small round palette...but there was nothing small about her prizewinning art! It's not where we work, but that we DO it, to the best of our ability.

You'll find this latest tip on my website as usual; click the Art Tips link at upper left, or go directly to http://www.cathyjohnson.info/tips.html

Feedback is always welcome--tell us YOUR plans and ideas!

And in other news...

MY APOLOGIES...

For being late with this newsletter AND with other promised projects. As some of you know, we've been dealing with health challenges, my husband and I, so I haven't had as much work time as I need to do everything I want to. But then...who does!?

And apologies too for sending you all the announcement on mini-classes by mistake last time! That was only supposed to go to those people who have requested information...

So if my brain has returned, we'll jump right in, and hope you enjoy all the wonderful opportunities for browsing and learning...

Meet Maria Sybilla Merian

...if you haven't already! Maria was one of my very first heroes, as an artist. She went to South America in the 17th Century to paint the most exquisite watercolors of the plants and insects she found there...as my husband says, before DEET, too!

The J. Paul Getty Museum had a show of her work (and her daughters') in 2008--I'd love to have gone, but very glad the webpage is still up!

The Getty did a catalog from the show that's still available on Amazon, but it's a bit rich for my blood...I've added it to my wish list, maybe the family can take out a loan and go in together! (OK, it's not THAT bad...)

Don't miss the slideshow at the link below...it's free!

NEWS FROM the ARTIST'S JOURNAL WORKSHOP BLOG

As many of you know, we have a group blog with the work and words of the artists who are included in my new North Light book, out NOW on Kindle and soon in traditional book form (Amazon's page says June 27.)

The blog has exceeded my wildest expectations, and I'm just delighted with the sharing of these generous, talented people. You'll find it here: http://artistsjournalworkshop.blogspot.com/

Recently, we've been exploring new materials, specifically a variety of ink pens for sketching and drawing. Laure Ferlita even did a wonderful video on her new Duke pen that she found on eBay (and yes of COURSE I had to try one! Love it!) You'll find that video HERE.

Our most recent interview (#11!) was with French artist Lapin, who has lived in Barcelona, Spain for the past 4 years. His lively sketches from his worldwide travels are an inspiration...makes my fingers itch to get OUT there! You can see his interview HERE.

Swedish correspondent Nina Johannson, who ALSO loves playing with new tools and materials (who among us doesn't!), was interview #110, which also came out since I last sent out a newsletter. You'll love it, and her! The interview is HERE. Check out her blog by clicking on her name--it's gorgeous.

Upcoming is interview #12 with Laure Ferlita, the creative driving force behind the wildly popular Imaginary Trips!

We have a new Facebook group now! The blog, as you know, features the work and words of the wonderful artists who made working on the book such an enriching experience. We welcome comments, feedback, suggestions and more there...but we didn't have a way to open it up to a wider group of journal keepers.

So I created the Facebook group, which has really taken off in the few days since its inception. Join us, post your journaling work, ask questions, create an album--we'll be glad to see you!

If you're on Facebook and the link above doesn't work immediately, just type Artist's Journal Workshop into the search window, and it will go right to it.

SKETCHBOOK REVIEW on WET CANVAS

You may enjoy this recent comparison of available sketchbooks on the Wet Canvas forum...you'll find it here: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=915272

We all have our favorites, of course, depending on how we work and what mediums we prefer. I like a versatile paper in a commercial sketchbook, something that will take at least light watercolor washes but will let me draw, too, if I want to. Stonehenge's new little sketchbooks are nice, as are Strathmore's Visual Journals. Aquabee Deluxe will take light washes and has a very nice surface for drawing.

(And no, I don't get a kickback from any of these companies! Just passing along what's worked for me in the past.)

----------------------

INK AND WATERCOLOR

This very popular mixed media technique will be the subject of one of my upcoming mini-classes (watercolor pencils is up next...watch for both on my webpage.)

And one thing that convinced me to DO a class was that the Ink and Watercolor Wash group on Flickr has just gone great guns! It has almost a thousand members now, and over 16,000 images to browse through! Talk about inspiration...

Visit HERE: http://www.flickr.com/groups/ink-and-watercolor-wash/ and join us if you like!

------------------

 Check out the Prismacolor Gallery!

I mentioned this briefly last time, but have had a bit more time to explore. It's NIFTY. You can even log in and get prompts and more. I enjoy colored pencils, mostly for sketching, but this gallery is TRULY inspiring! Lots of projects, events, and artists, too...you'll come away with dozens of ideas...

BEATRIX POTTER, a woman ahead of her time

If you love Potter's work as much as I do--her wonderful children's books but also her scientific works--you'll love this web page. Browse to your heart's content, I guarantee you'll be amazed and enlightened. The insects and fungi are especial favorites of mine.

A NEW MINI-UPDATE on MINI CLASSES

I've been delighted with the response to my mini-classes! Needless to
say there hasn't been time or energy for the longer ones during all
this, so it's great to have something to share with you right NOW.

So far, we're offering Quick Sketching 1 and 2; I hope to have Watercolor Pencil and Ink and Watercolor classes available soon, as noted above (something ELSE I didn't have the energy to do recently--not that you could have understood a word of my video demos between the hacking coughs! Best laid plans...)

And next after that, probably:

SKETCHING IN NATURE

QUICK SKETCHING IN COLOR(I had to take a break from quick sketching, I was getting positively hyper!)

ALL Mini-Classes are $30

for four fully-illustrated lessons

full of exercises, tips, demos, and videos...and feedback's been fantastic!**

** Here's a bit of Feedback on Mini-Classes--for more of what students are saying, please go to http://www.cathyjohnson.info/quicksketch.html

just wanted to thank you for your patience and let you know what we are up to!

Some of you know that my husband underwent surgery in April, and I got the world's longest-lasting chest cold, so not a great deal of work got done around here beyond the absolute basics. (I also had a big article to do for Watercolor Artist magazine and an interview I'd promised to give, in addition to our regular orders, so I haven't been a COMPLETE slug!)

He's doing well, and I'm much better, so back to work on new mini-classes and more.*

Hoping to have the Watercolor Pencil Mini up in the next month--watch for it! I'll send an email like this one when it's done, or sign up for my art tip newsletter mailing list, at http://cathyjohnson.info. (For a while there I was so hoarse I couldn't have made a video you could have understood! I have a voice again now, so full speed ahead. )

After that, It may be the watercolor and ink mini so many of you have asked about. (In the meantime, some people are using my CD, Ink and Wash Workshop, a slide-show type workshop that's been very popular. (It also offers PDFs full of information and suggestions, as well as inspiration from a number of wonderful artists who enjoy the mixture of mediums.

You can find out more about it in my CafePress store, here: http://www.cafepress.com/cathy_johnson.61122728

I'm hoping to have a new Elements of Landscape--Trees CD available before too long, too, also in the popular slide show format. It was almost done when I got my new computer last year, and the new machine didn't like my Windows MovieMaker projects...so I stalled out for a while.

Anyway, that's where we are right now...I'd best get back to work so I DO have something to offer you patient people!

Best--
Kate
