Where In the World Are Coleen and Bob?
(And Just What Are We Doing?)

Alaska! We've called Alaska home for the past 15 years. We're here for the summer. One of our favorite places in Alaska is Homer. In this issue, we share some of what draws us back to Homer time and again. Fishing. Eagles. Unique RVs. The views. The people.

Wherever you are in your travels, we wish you joy and prosperity,
Coleen

RVing in Homer, Alaska

Follow the links to read these articles on our RV Life and Travel website.

Thump, thump, thump ... you feel their tail pushing them, you feel the sheer power of the big flat fish running. That is how Bob explained his day of halibut fishing to me.

With bright blue paint and wooden shingles and siding, this customized motorhome is hard to miss. The carved salmon adorning the front are perfect for it's current location in this busy Alaskan fishing village.

This homemade pickup camper has some thought out details. Notice how the roof overhangs the back door. I can imagine standing in the doorway, a mug of freshly brewed coffee in hand, looking out over the rolling ocean, with snow-capped mountains in the background, while it is raining -- and not getting wet.

Homer, Alaska, is on the Kenai Peninsula. The Homer Spit at the end of the road. It is literally at the end of the Sterling Highway. Homer is home to artists, hippies, and fisherman.

You may have heard of "The Eagle Lady," Jean Keene. She worked at one of the fish processing plants and started feeding waste fish to the eagles wintering near her trailer home on the Homer Spit. At first, there were a pair of eagles. More came. Her feeding operation continued.

There's the saying that Homer is "a drinking town with a fishing problem." Indeed, it was the fishing that originally lured us there back in 2001. But, the people…hippies, artists, Russian Old Believers, fishermen, survivalists, foreign visitors, cheechakos and sourdoughs, an occasional conservative, a few gnarly folk....

Camping and RVing News and Tidbits

~ The National Park Service invites visitors of all ages to join in the celebration of its 100th birthday throughout the month of August. Free admission to all 412 national parks from August 25 through August 28.

~ Go RVing close to home. You may not yet be a full-time RVer but you can still get some RVing and camping in this summer. State parks are great places to get away from it all, without going too far away or breaking the bank. Besides natural beauty and an abundance of recreational activities, many have cabins you can rent.

~ Thor recently purchased Jayco.

~ There may soon be a new South Dakota state park at Spearfish Canyon. The proposed state park would contain natural features in the canyon including Roughlock Falls, Spearfish Falls, Spearfish Creek and Little Spearfish Creek.

RV Life and Travel Tip -- Replacement Mattresses that Fit

RV beds come in odd sizes and shapes. In our travel trailer, there's room for more than a double bed mattress, but not enough room for a queen size. In our motorhome, the one end angles so that it isn't sticking out into the aisle. Memory foam mattresses are the solution to these non-standard beds. We buy one that is a little big for the bed and Bob cuts it to fit. He uses an ordinary kitchen knife. The covering that comes on them can then be folded or tacked into place. Another benefit of getting a memory foam mattress as a replacement is that they are easy to get into the RV.
