shade! advice from ken druse’s new book (win it), plus my top plants for low light
|
Hello ,
Before we get started, a public-service announcement:
It’s a holiday weekend, meaning we gardeners might interact with the general public at, say, a
family BBQ. My advice, based on Andre Jordan’s latest doodle: Try to fit in, as recommended above! Happy long weekend.
ken druse's tips, from 'the new shade garden'
“The garden of the future will be a
shade garden,” proclaims Ken Druse in his latest book. That’s not just because there are now so many plants to choose from, but shade is also looking extra-inviting because of our changing (baking!) climate. Learn from Ken to select good plants, site them well, and help them get adjusted.
shade star: tropical leaves on bone-hardy
astilboides
With nearly 2-foot-wide, light green leaves on hairy stems that can approach 4 feet here, Astilboides tabularis is no shy thing, though it’s not a spreading thug at all.
shade star: bottlebrush buckeye, big and
beautiful
I’m not sure there is any shade-tolerant shrub I like more than bottlebrush buckeye, with its July bloom and great fall color. The pollinators agree.
