PCA—Early one morning during Porsche Parade, Smoky Mountain Region member Vic Rola pulled up to the hotel ahead of the photoshoot of his car for Porsche Panorama. With a reporter, photographer, art director, and videographer in tow, we proceeded to our chosen location.

PCA—It all started back in the late ’70s, when I was just beginning to enjoy autocross and driver schools. And then I saw it, parked in Chuck Stoddard’s Porsche store in Willoughby, Ohio. It was the first time I’d laid eyes on a brand-new Porsche factory race car — a turbocharged 934, no less.

PCA—In this issue, admire the brutish beauty of the third JLP Porsche 935 special, a tube-framed behemoth developed with drug money in the 1980s, in “On the Run,” by Bill Oursler. In “Outta My Way!” by David Mathews, read about one member’s ’72 911E, once vanilla white but now sporting period-correct rally car mods and two loud red stripes. In “2 Laps of America,” by Gregor Tarjan, two friends entered One Lap of America — twice — in two unlikely Porsches: a Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. Kieron Fennelly shares the history of a German racing legend in “Wolfgang von Trips.” Inspired by the concept car at the 1993 Detroit Auto Show, in “A Boxster, His Way,” by David Mathews, one member purchased a Boxster S on the cheap and got creative to mimic the show car. Amy Skogstrom recaps this year’s Werks Reunion Monterey in “Back To Werks.”

Road & Track—Last summer, we put together a test examining the current state of the Porsche 911. It took place in Northern California, using both public roads and the 2.0-mile "west course" at Thunderhill Raceway Park. Since that test was meant more as an overview—a broad look at the 911 model range—we asked editor at large and club racer Sam Smith for his track notes: What the cars ask of you on a closed course. How they feel, what they want, and most of all, how they're different.

It wasn’t the day I got my license, or the day I bought my first sports car. It wasn’t even yesterday, when I put a hundred incident-free miles on my (Maybe? Possibly?) “Finished,” and “working” project Fox Body Mustang.

Porsche Newsroom—The six-hour race at FIA WEC World Endurance Championship in Bahrain on November 19 will be the last time the reigning World Champion from Australia will compete as a works driver. Afterwards new tasks await the nine times Formula One Grands Prix winner: 40-year old Mark Webber will represent Porsche at global events and as a consultant will contribute by lending his experience to the motorsport programmes of the sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart.
 
Motor1—The timing of Mark Webber’s announcement that he’s to retire from racing at the end of this season caught many by surprise. It was certainly on the cards as sooner rather than later – although my money was on next year.

The Car Guide—Evolution takes time. Centuries, millennia are required in order for changes to occur, if they are needed. Evolution brings improvements and adaptation. It can also equate to extinction thus survival of the fittest is ensured. The environment and the climate are huge factors in bringing forth changes and in places like San Diego, California; Athens, Greece; or Stuttgart, Germany, evolution takes a little longer.

MultiBriefs—When you get a new car, you suddenly notice similar vehicles everywhere you go — coming toward you on the road, behind you at a stoplight or next to you in a parking lot. While some of today's cars blend into the landscape, others are much more noticeable — like Porsches.

Motor1—In the world of classic Porsches, few are as rare or as pretty as the legendary 904 GTS. Produced in limited numbers between 1964 and 1965, the 904’s true calling came on the track. This example, having seen its fair share of the circuit, is now heading to auction as part of the Bonhams Scottsdale Car Week event where it’s expected to fetch big money.
 
Car and Driver—The Porsche Boxster and Cayman have been shining beacons of sports-car excellence for the better part of two decades, and together with the 911 they’ve reassured the faithful as Porsche ventured off into different product categories. With each succeeding generation, the Boxster has managed to get better looking (a rarity in automotive design), quicker, and more capable.
 
Right Foot Down—Recently I found a reasonably priced Porsche 996 while scouring Craigslist. Something I do on a daily basis. This particular Porsche 911 Carrera was a white on black 1999 coupe with 92k miles. That’s fairly low mileage for a 15 year old car. Inside, the car was good with a little wear on the touch surfaces to show it’s age. It was clearly daily driver spec, and that’s what I was wanted – the Porsche 911 to take anywhere at any time and not worry about it.

My pithy commentary and artful use of .GIFs had the unintended effect of making me seem like the anti-Tavarish, someone who advises against buying a daily-driver European luxury car for less than a Japanese econobox. Sorry to disappoint, but I’m just as crazy as anyone here, if not worse. Exhibit A of my reckless disregard for any sense of financial security is my new purchase: this 1999 Porsche 911.
