e-Brake News: Porsche 911 GT2 RS breaks Nürburgring lap record for production cars

PCA—It seems like Nürburgring Nordschleife lap times have been falling at an exponential pace lately, and Porsche has always preferred to have the fastest car around the 12.8-mile track in Germany. Not to be outdone by the competition, the automaker’s new 911 GT2 RS just set the production car lap record.

PCA—As soon as the Porsches from 68 PCA regions began arriving at the historic Omni Grove Park Inn, the participants in Treffen Asheville knew they were going to experience something very special.

This grand hotel, the original part of which was built in 1903, greeted attendees in its massive, castle-like lobby, with huge stone fireplaces on each side. Looking to the west was a spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

PCA—I’d never owned a water-cooled Porsche 911 before. In fact, until I took Executive Director Vu Nguyen’s black 1999 996 Carrera for a short drive, I’d never even driven one. Their performance-to-dollar ratio (0-60 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds and 174-mph top speed for under $20,000) has always been incredibly attractive even if the car itself isn’t generally regarded as the best-looking iteration of the 911.

PCA—As Hurricane Irma bore down on south Florida, tearing through several Caribbean Islands as a category 5 storm, PCA Gold Coast Region member George Kveton was in Switzerland paying close attention to the news. Reports didn’t have Marco Island, where he owns a home, in the direct path of the hurricane, but “it wasn’t looking good,” he said. He also keeps three Porsches in the garage and two boats behind his home.

PCA—Save the date! Porsche Parade 2018: Lake of the Ozarks, will take place July 8-14, 2018, at the Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Missouri.

Porsche Parade, PCA's annual weeklong event, takes place in a new place each year. For 2018, we're heading to the midwest — the summer resort town of Osage Beach
 
PCA—Isringhausen Motorsports is an integral part of the paddock at many Porsche Club of America (PCA) Club Racing events throughout the year. The sports car team — a branch of Isringhausen Imports based in Springfield, Illinois — usually has anywhere from four to six cars at each event.

PCA—Join Porsche Club of America (PCA) and Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) at the Porscheplatz at the Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, Braselton, GA., Friday, October 6 and Saturday, October 7. The Porscheplatz tent will be the hub of activity for PCA members and Porsche owners. The Porscheplatz tent is located just over the bridge between Turn 10B and 12.

The Smoking Tire via YouTube—This 1956 Porsche 356A is a "Sunroof Coupe" that has been owned by the current owner since 1990. It is powered by the original 1600CC engine making approximately 85 horsepower and, as a restored driver example, is a delight to wheel around.

Petrolicious—For me, the most exciting piece of the world of cars is related to its size. People who don’t share our hobby tend to lump everyone in as “car people,” and while we do share a lot of the same opinions, there are so many different groups that form around particular brands, models, eras, body styles, etc.
 
Motor1—Why We Remember It Now: Not only is it one of the most unusual Porsches ever made, but it’s also the first car to receive Italdesign’s signature wedge shape.

Car and Driver—Michigan summers are even sweeter when you’re driving a quick and beautiful convertible. This is prime season for folding our Porsche 718’s top, thumbing the button for the exhaust’s Sport mode, and blasting down a two-lane with haste.

Motor1—Featured in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, one of the best-selling video games of all time, “Turbo Lover” is a hit song released by Judas Priest back in 1986. Heavy metal aficionados know there’s an interesting story behind this song as a 1985 Porsche 911 Turbo SE of the 930 generation served as the primary source of inspiration.
 
Road & Track—When we saw the Porsche 911 GT2 RS's incredible 6:47.25 Nürburgring lap time yesterday, we couldn't help but wonder what made the car so fast. Sure, the GT2 RS has 700 horsepower, but on paper, it seems quite low-tech compared to the two previous Nürburgring lap record holders, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante and Porsche's own 918 Spyder.

MultiBriefs—It happened on a whim.

A routine pounding of a few keys commanding some entity to fetch a set of spark plugs and have them at my door in a few days was stopped dead.
 
The Drive—Sometimes when I think back on the existence of the 935, I remember just how crazy Porsche used to be. The original 935 was effectively new aero on a traditional 911 street car chassis.

Car and Driver—The Volkswagen diesel scandal first broke in the United States, but it has since occupied an ever-widening global circle. Two days ago, one of the Volkswagen Group’s most prominent research and development experts, Wolfgang Hatz, was arrested—not in America, but in Munich. That’s what several independent sources are reporting, following the lead of the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Autoblog—Our spy photographer got us a first look at the interior of the 2019 Porsche 911, and it's going to be a lot more modern.

Taking some design cues from the Panamera, the 911 interior will get a wide LCD screen — wide as in the 12.3-inch unit from the Panamera, or so it appears.
 
Motor1—Anibal Automotive from Montreal, Canada, is already very familiar with tuning Porsches, and now the firm is applying that knowledge into its own hypercar that the company calls the Icon. This carbon-fiber-bodied cruise missile packs the 3.8-liter biturbo flat six from the existing 911 Turbo S but the output grows to a massive 920 horsepower.

Black Flag via Jalopnik—Porsche announced its departure from the top class of the World Endurance Championship back in July, but it is still nailing down the details of what comes next. It’s a massive game of musical chairs with around 300 staff members and six drivers who are sad to see the 919 program end, but very anxious to know what they’ll be working on next year. It’s all in a state of limbo until Porsche’s higher-ups figure it out.
 
Car and Driver—A couple of years ago, Microsoft partnered with Ford to bring one-off GT40-themed Xbox One controllers to SEMA. Undoubtedly, avid Forza fans with Blue Oval loyalties ached for the things, but they were regrettably left to craft their own with some Tamiya paint and a roll of striping tape. Now Scuf, the aftermarket gaming-peripherals supplier, has leapt into the fray with Porsche 911 GT2 RS–inspired controllers.

Black Flag via Jalopnik—Funny how when a major automaker like Porsche plans to swap its flagship World Endurance Championship Le Mans prototype effort for a Formula E run, Porsche’s top factory drivers keep popping up on the entry list for Formula E.
