 PCA—Back in February, when Tech Tactics East was held at Porsche Cars North America’s East Coast training facility and parts warehouse,
Rob Ida and his stunning custom 1986 911 Turbo were scheduled for a presentation to hundreds of PCA members in attendance. Unfortunately, due to a family emergency, he could not make it. Fortunately, Porsche Panorama had plans to photograph and film the Turbo for an article and a video.

PCA—After sharing the stage with the World Endurance Championship at Lone Star Le Mans each fall, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship heads out on its own this spring for an action-packed celebration of speed! Welcome to the Advance Auto Parts Sportscar Showdown, May 4-6 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Along with unprecedented fan access to the paddock and grid, the debut of IMSA's own race weekend features a wide variety of classes and cars ranging from Le Mans prototypes to GTs.

PCA—Porsche Club of America’s Hill Country Region (HCR) had the honor of hosting the first-ever springtime Treffen North America, the event formerly known as Escape and held annually in the fall.

Thanks to the leadership of HCR President Tracey Gross and Vice President Tuffy von Briesen, plus an energetic and friendly group of 43 HCR volunteers, Treffen Hill Country was a great success.

PCA—In this issue, Basem Wasef drives the face lifted and turbocharged 911 Carrera GTS in “Striking a Balance.” Read about Rob Ida’s customized 911 Turbo in “Less is More” by Tom Cotter, then click here to watch the video on PCA.org. Bill Griffin couldn’t drive a car, but that didn’t stop him from riding his own Porsche, as you’ll find out in the heartwarming story by Bob Chapman, “A Porsche for Bill.” One member took quite some time to restore his 1973 911T on his own, but it was worth it, as you’ll learn in “Eleven Years On,” by Randy Wells. Join Sean Cridland in “Pikes Peak Legacy” as he chronicles the Donner family’s involvement since 1946 at the famous hill climb. In “Treasure Trove” by Doug Lloyd, get a mini-tour of the 34th L.A. Lit and Toy Show, where you’re sure to find obscure items of all types relating to Porsche.

PCA—The PCA Club Racing West Coast Series is a points competition comprised of the all the PCA club races that occur on the West Coast. Historically, club racing in PCA has been most popular on the east coast, and this series was created in 2014 to encourage West Coast club members to take up club racing by providing them with the increased competition and sense of camaraderie that comes with having one's own competitive series.

Driven Racing Oil—In cooperation with LN Engineering and Flat 6 Innovations, Driven Racing Oil purchased a 1999 Porsche 986 that had suffered an IMS bearing failure. The engine was removed, and Driven purchased a replacement 2.5 liter M96 engine from SSF Auto Parts. The RND engine features an IMS Retrofit replacement IMS bearing and Nickies cylinders with factory rings and pistons from LN Engineering. Flat 6 Innovations installed the RND engine in the vehicle and performed a complete mechanical inspection. The stock oil filter and drain plug were replaced with a Mann-Hummel filter and LN Engineering Magnetic Drain Plug for these tests. All of the fluids in the vehicle were drained and replaced with Driven Racing Oil products where appropriate. The power steering fluid was replaced with Driven PSF. The gear oil was replaced with Driven LS75W-90 Gear Oil. ALS Tribology was selected to perform Used Oil Analysis on each sample taken from the vehicle.

PistonHeads via YouTube—The only way to separate the Audi RS7 and the new Porsche Panamera Turbo is to take them to Santa Pod Raceway for some drag racing.
 
Matt has been given the arduous task of finding out which one is better and these four-wheel drive, twin-turbo V8 executive saloons are pretty similar. Both will happily run sub-12second quarter mile times all day long and both will carry four in comfort.

Car and Driver—The 2017 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid Platinum Edition plug-in hybrid thumped up onto Car and Driver’s California scales and punished them to the tune of 5373 pounds. That’s 54 pounds less than we recorded for the slightly less lavish non–Platinum Edition version during testing in Michigan. Hey, California gravity is groovier than Michigan gravity. Or maybe it was the nearly $10,000 in extra options on the Michigan car that added mass.

The Smoking Tire via YouTube—The 993 era of Porsche 911's from 1995 to 1998 is a favorite among those who love air cooled Porkers. It is the newest, and therefore the most modern air cooled 911, and it maintains a great balance between over-engineered modern quality and old-school feel. It may not be the fastest or most powerful 911 that you can get for the high-five figures, but it certainly feels special to drive.

MultiBriefs—As a father of four millennials and a car enthusiast, I have (not surprisingly) made some observations concerning that millennial generation, manual transmissions and performance/competition driving in general. While not a compendium of all my many varied and mostly useless observations over the last 24 years, these are my most recent.

The Drive—For as long as I can remember, racing games such as Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport, as comprehensive as their car lists were, always had one key omission: Porsche.

Motor1—Porsche built just over 2,000 examples of the 911 Speedster in 1989, making them exceptionally rare finds on the used market. Luckily enough, a pristine example has come up for sale as part of the Silverstone Auctions’ May sale – but it won’t be cheap.

Business Insider—According to a recent study by The Boston Consulting Group, 25% of all miles driven in the United States will be covered in self-driving cars by the year 2030. Virtually every major automaker is hard at work creating vehicles that can take you from point A to point B safely without you ever having to do any driving yourself.
 
Black Flag via Jalopnik—The same model of brand-new Porsche 911 RSR race car that has run without major issues so far this year in the United States had a major engine failure at the FIA World Endurance Championship’s 6 Hours of Silverstone, belching flames out of the engine cover that replaces its back window.
