Hi

I'm sad that the summer holidays seemed to go so quickly but also pleased that normal routines will be resumed next week! It's been the busiest August ever as far as work is concerned. I thought everyone was supposed to be away. Or maybe they were and that's why I was so busy!

We were up in Norfolk last weekend for the Camping and Caravanning Club National Feast of Lanterns. My Aunt, Uncle and Cousin came down from Scotland and we met them there. It was a bit wet but there was lots of entertainment (including Doddsy getting called up onstage by the comedy vocalist, Brenda Collins, which was very funny!) and a beer tent, so we coped ;-)

This week I was running a couple of intermediate digital and social media courses for Arts Council England. It was a flexible course designed so that I asked the delegates at the beginning of the day what they needed to know by the end of the day and then attempted to ensure that was the case!

As you can imagine all that thinking on my feet was exhausting. It seemed to go down well though and it was very enjoyable (for me at least!). So, I'm trying to recover a bit this weekend.

Periscope

Last night Little Doddsy and I were watching a laser display at the Royal Opera House on a live broadcast via Periscope. Have you come across this fairly new platform? It allows live video streaming via smartphones.

Ellie was transfixed and insisted on having a good rummage around in the app to see who else was (or had been) live broadcasting. She's desperate to help me do one now!

I've been putting off using it as I avoid video already as much as I can so the idea of doing a live broadcast isn't top of my list! I have started doing a video version of my newsletter that will lend itself to this but I'm still not keen. But my 'digital native' wants me to do one and for her to help, so we are going to do it tomorrow (Sunday), probably around 1pm. I'll report back next week (join us if you can!).

Can I ask you for your thoughts?

I have been further chewing over my ideas for what to do with POWER to Live More and I'd like to get your thoughts.

It's struck me that I'm sharing a lot of content in these newsletters that you a) only get if you are on the list when the newsletter lands, and only then if you get chance to read it and b) only find the info later when you need it if you have a good follow up system and remember to add the stuff to it!

So, I'm thinking that if I could put the content somewhere that you can access when you need it with great search that might be useful. And that led me to think that it might also be a good place to put additional content like courses, webinars and how to / checklists in too.

I don't want to spend ages getting that all set up though and finding that no one wants it! So, if you have less than 2 minutes, please can you click through to my mini survey to give me your thoughts?

Do you have animals that get ill?

I came across Pawsquad.co.uk the other day. It's a website where you can seek advice online via video call from qualified vets. It looks really handy for quick advice and might save a trek to the vet and save you time!

Get people to transfer money to your PayPal account easily

I came across PayPal.me this week, recommended by a friend on Facebook. You can register to get a personal link to share with anyone who wants to send money to your PayPal account. It is obviously connected to your PayPal account, so you need one of those first - business or personal.

Sadly they do need to want to pay you the money though! It's not a magic way to get money but it is convenient and makes it easy to share your PayPal details with people who owe you money. This is my business url if you want to see what it looks like (don't worry, you don't need to pay me any money!).

Habits - knowing (and reminding yourself of) your 'why' is key

I was listening to a podcast this week, The Productivity Show by Asian Efficiency, that was all about 'Rituals over Habits' (show TPS54). A key point I picked up about ensuring that you stick to your habits and rituals was about being clear in the first place as to why you want to do this regular 'task' and then making sure that you can easily find that information as time goes on as it's a really good way to ensure that you stick to the habit.

I have quite a few daily items on my task list that I need to 'prune' every so often otherwise I get completely overwhelmed doing small tasks and have no time for the big stuff. Thinking about 'why' the item got on the list in the first place and whether that is still relevant is a really helpful frame for such a review. Hope it helps you too.

Finding and Sharing Useful Content Online

I knew I spoke too soon last week saying I've managed to blog every week since I started this new part of my business! Oh well, 'living more' means letting things go sometimes doesn't it. It was a walk into town for a cuppa and a slice of cake earlier vs blogging...you now know which one won!

So, as I was talking about my process for finding and sharing content this week during my workshops I thought I'd reshare my post from a few months ago that gives you the gen on how I do it! How to Find, Read and Share Useful and Valuable Content Enjoy...

Rewilding - do you know what that is? Fascinating stuff...

A bit off topic, but really interesting

On the TED Radio Hour the 'Everything Is Connected' show this week they were talking about the concept of rewilding. It's not a term I'd heard before.

Basically, they reintroduced wolves into Yosemite National Park in the US and as a result many different animal species and even the course of the rivers were affected in a positive way (cumulatively - some animals, like deer, who had taken over the park, were impacted negatively, which enabled other animals to thrive and the vegetation to regenerate, which in turn attracted birds and other animals.). This YouTube video 'How Wolves Change Rivers' tells the story too.

PS Should I be worried that Little Doddsy is writing her Christmas List as I write this?!
