Seeing Marvel's Future in Age of Ultron
With the release of Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron less than two months away, we're poring over the movie's details and characters as fast as they come in.

With dozens of characters, new and old, Age of Ultron will be instrumental in setting up the Marvel Universe for years to come.

Avengers: Age of Ultron Story

In the aftermath of the first Avengers film, the world now knows about the huge group of superheroes and villains (which sets up the events for 2016's Captain America: Civil War).

After S.H.I.E.L.D. imploded during Captain America: Winter Soldier, Tony Stark and Captain America are leading the Avengers. Stark has graciously turned Stark Towers into the Avengers headquarters.

We know that Marvel has taken some liberty with Ultron's backstory, and instead of being created by Hank Pym (as in the comics), Ultron was actually created by Tony Stark in an effort to build a peacekeeping robot.

In classic sci-fi fashion, the robot gains sentience, upgrades itself, and decides that humanity must be wiped out in order for the world to have peace.

As the movie progresses, we'll see Ultron upgrade his armor and abilities, going from a robot who looks like he was built in a junkyard to the death machine we all fear.

We also know that the evil Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, along with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be central characters.

As seen during the credits of Winter Soldier, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker (played by Thomas Kretschmann) has Loki's scepter, using it on Quicksilver and his sister, Scarlet Witch, which is how they get their superpowers.

According to an interview with Kretschmann, we'll be seeing more of Strucker in future Marvel films.

If you've seen the Age of Ultron movie trailers, you know that Iron Man's Hulkbuster armor is coming out to play. Our comic book instinct tells us that Scarlet Witch will brainwash Hulk or cast some kind of hex on him, turning into an angry, hero-crushing monster.

In another departure from the comics, Tony Stark's computer system, J.A.R.V.I.S., will become The Vision, possibly with the help of Ultron. The Vision can be seen at the end of the third Avengers trailer.

A side story in Age of Ultron will be Captain America's search for Bucky, whose whereabouts are unknown after the events in Winter Soldier.

Besides Ultron and his robot minions wreaking havoc across the world, we know that a few other villains will make an appearance, including:
  • Loki
  • Ulysses Klaw
  • Greg Hulk (with red eyes = Super Angry Hulk!)

After plenty of arguing between Marvel and Fox (the owners of the X-Men movies), it was agreed that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch could appear in Age of Ultron.

In the comics, these two characters are the children of Magneto. However, with the X-Men film rights owned by Fox, Marvel is barred from mentioning Magneto or even the word "mutant".

With Marvel significantly expanding their universe, it would be great if some kind of agreement could be worked out between Marvel and Fox, especially if we ever hope to see a Marvel Zombies film.
