OzEWEX, the Australian Water and Energy Exchange Research Initiative, is inviting applications for a competitive fellowship grant to participate in the 2017 Australian Climate and Water Summer Institute. This prestigious six-week event offers around 15 of the most talented students and early career researchers in Australia and New Zealand a unique opportunity to work closely with peers and experts from academia and government agencies to enhance climate and water information and its practical applications. Successful applicants will have an affinity with climate and water issues but can be from a variety of relevant technical backgrounds.


Two Fulbright Awards in Earth Science

Application Deadline: 1 August 2017

An open call for two three-month awards for American scientists in environmental sciences, marine sciences, and oceanography has been announced. The Fulbright Award in Ocean Issues (AIR Center) at the University of the Azores will look at the impact of environmental parameter changes on the distribution and abundance of large pelagic migratory species such as tuna, cetaceans, elasmobranchs, marine turtles, among other possible group of species. Candidates within the discipline of environmental sciences are sought, with specializations in remote sensing, modeling and statistics, and climate change. The Fulbright Award in Marine Resources at IPMA in Lisbon involves modeling Portuguese ecosystem dynamics and forecast shifts in biodiversity or ecosystem function. Candidates studying environmental sciences with specializations in marine sciences, ocean ecology, ecosystem modeling are sought for this position.

The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) are seeking nominations for their International Prize for Model Development, awarded annually for an outstanding contribution to weather and climate model development by an early- to mid-career researcher. The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) have established an International Data Prize, awarded annually to honor achievements in climate data product generation, data management, data preservation, data monitoring, and other data relevant activities by an early- to mid-career researcher. Call for Papers for “Hydrology delivers Earth System Sciences to Society (HESSS4): Improving and Integrating Knowledge across Disciplines on Global Energy, Water and Carbon Cycles”

Submission Deadline: 31 October 2017

Across various disciplines, a number of community-wide initiatives (such as CMIP, GSWP, ISIMIP, HAPPI, ILAMB, etc.) have developed to synthesize and advance knowledge of climate change impacts, land surface processes, and global energy, water and biogeochemical cycles. These have made indispensable contributions to recent advances in Earth system sciences. The 4th international conference of Hydrology delivers Earth System Sciences to Society (HESSS4) was held in May 2017 to provide a forum to strengthen synergies between research communities of climate modeling, monitoring and impact assessment and to discuss how to deliver scientific achievements to our society. Here, we call for papers for a special collection to compile those interdisciplinary works introduced in HESSS4 and extended to the associated communities. Further details of the conference are available on the web page.

The solicitations of this special collection will cover a wide range of interrelated research topics including but not limited to (1) Changes of Climate Forcing and Terrestrial Feedback, (2) Climate Extremes and Impacts Assessment, (3) Natural-Human System Interactions, (4) Satellite Remote Sensing for Extreme Monitoring, (5) Short-/mid-range Hydrologic Forecast, (6) Data and Model Integration, (7) Model Benchmarking and Uncertainty Estimation, and (8) Delivering Science to Society. Contributions linking two or more of these topics are especially encouraged. Manuscripts should be submitted through the GEMS Web site. The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes is a major seven-year initiative that brings together five of Australia’s leading universities and a suite of national and international partners. The ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes’ goal is to transform our understanding of past and present climate extremes and revolutionize our capability to predict them into the future. The Centre is seeking a diverse range of talented postdoctoral research associates to work on projects across the four core research programs of Extreme Rainfall, Heatwaves and Cold Air Outbreaks, Drought, and Climate Variability and Teleconnections.
