Often, especially now, the first step in an employer's
hiring process is an interview over the phone.
No dressing up. No big smiles. Whew! But... phone interviews do have some hazards. However, with the right approach, phone interviews can be seen as an advantage to interviewees.
In this article, top recruiter Jeff Lipschultz shares how to "ace" the dreaded phone interview. He provides 9 excellent observations from the recruiter's perspective. He knows candidates who have successfully leveraged these ideas in their interviews. Consider these ideas to make you stand out amongst the other candidates.

Phone screen interviews are typically the first hurdle in
the interview process, used by employers to quickly separate the qualified from the unqualified job candidates. While sounding simple, they can be very easy to mess up -- from a bad connection to noisy kids or a lack of preparation.
Author and Job Interviews Expert Laura DeCarlo shares 12 important steps to help you succeed in your next phone screen interview, so you will be invited to continue the interviewing process. Laura covers many important details, from setting up your space for the call to ending the call effectively. These steps will guide you successfully through the telephone
interview.
With the Coronavirus pandemic, "social distancing"
requirements and other health protection issues, video interviews are becoming a necessity. Video is considered the next best thing to in-person interviews by many employers. Of course, because technology is involved, they are often not as easy or simple as we expect.
The attendees may be only the job seeker and the interviewer, typically the recruiter or HR person. Or, with the impact of the Coronavirus, several interviewers are becoming slightly more common. Typically, Zoom, Skype, or WebEx are used for the interview, but you need to ask questions before the interview and carefully set up your computer for the interview to make the best impression. Learn what to do to succeed
in this article by Job Interviews Expert Laura Decarlo.
As video interviews have become MUCH more common, you may
encounter one-way video interviews which were relatively rare until recently. In the one-way video interview, the job seeker's answers to preset questions are recorded for the employer to view later. The good news is you usually have several options to schedule the interview, and the bad news is that you don't see or hear human reactions to your answers.
One-way video interviews are an increasing method of doing the first round of interviews. The purpose of the one-way video interview and the phone interview are typically the same: confirm that the candidate meets the basic requirements for the job. Follow Job Interviews Expert Laura Decarlo's 12 steps, described in this article, to your own one-way video interview
success.
