Have you ever said to yourself, “If I could only get an interview, I could prove I’m the right person for the job”.

You don’t need to wait for the interview to get in front of hiring professionals. By being active on social media, you can prove you have the skills, experience and personality for the work you are interested in.

Years ago, your resume was the only tool you had access to in order to be considered for a job. If an employer wanted to learn more about you, they would have to pick up the phone and talk with you. But that took a great deal of time.

Today, employers research candidates online and evaluate the information in your profiles as well as what you share in status updates.

By creating and maintaining this public visibility, you will have laid the foundation of your Personal SEO (Search Engine Optimization). The payoff for you will be substantial and long-term -- a shorter job search and a better career going forward.

The good news is that all but the last of these sites are free for you to use. The bad news is that this will take some time and work to create and to manage your visibility. But, don't feel you must start everything at once. Start with your LinkedIn Profile and go on from there. If you have time for only one of these "magnets," LinkedIn is where you should spend your time.

And, once you join these magnets, you will need to monitor and participate in any appropriate activities to maintain your visibility, always acting appropriately and professionally, of course.

Social Media Connecting Power

Effective selection and placement of keywords is the core of effective SEO (search engine optimization), which is a required part of successful job search and careers today. To avoid invisibility, the "right keywords" (for you, you target job, and your target career) must be included in the "right places" (LinkedIn Professional Headline, LinkedIn Summary, etc.).

Those keywords are, literally, the key to being found in a search.

Keywords are the search terms used by people to find what they want in a search engine, social network, or applicant tracking system.

If a recruiter is searching for someone with experience in Microsoft Word, your name won't appear in search results unless your social profile or resume contain those exact words.

Most software isn't very smart or forgiving. It won't understand that, to be a successful administrative assistant, knowledge of Microsoft Word is required. Consequently, without that term visible in your social profile and resume, your documents or profile will not be seen by a human being.

Even if you have that experience, you are invisible unless your social profile or resume includes the term being searched, like "Microsoft Word" in our example.
