Chuck the Resolutions: How to Get Real Change in 2016

Published: Fri, 01/01/16

It's 2016.

You probably made a list, at least in your head.  We do this year after year knowing that 92% of New Year’s Resolutions Fail.

Chuck the Resolutons: How to Get Real Change in 2016

Here’s why they don’t work:
    1. Too many things to focus on scatters your limited energy and leads to paralysis – can’t do any of it well, so you don’t keep trying
    2. Your list has goals and not habits – goals are too complex to make progress towards (more on this below)
    3. Too much time to get anything done – 1 year is WAY too long a deadline

Here is what to do instead:

    1) Look at your list and pick out your Top 3 things for 2016

    2) Do ONE thing for the first quarter (Jan – March 31st)

    3) Assign the 2nd most important one to the second quarter and 3rd to the 3rd

    4) In the fourth quarter, you review your work on the Top 3 and Improve it

Do it this way and you WILL get those 3 things nailed in 2016.

Right now some of your egos are grumbling that you can do more than 1 thing in 90 days. Ok. Try it out. If it works, you may be one of the people who can do 2.

I personally will do 3 things 1st quarter. I am:

    A) Building the next Turning Point Summit on Wealth & Health (you asked, I deliver!)

    B) Decluttering my whole house and life and getting rid of my storage!

    C) Trying out new and different ways of Teaching

Here is what I promise, IF you will do ONE thing, hold one focus for 90 days you will succeed. I would do your one thing, succeed and then if you feel confident try doing two things for your 2nd quarter.

Single focus is like a laser and makes you powerful instead of distracted and scattered.

90 days is a natural season and rhythm of focus for humans and works wonderfully for all projects. Do not set things beyond the 90 days or make it a “second” project if need be. ( 90 minutes works the same way too.)

Here is my secret sauce:  Your target should be to acquire the HABIT that will generate your goal and NOT the goal itself.

Example: Common New Year’s Goal? Lose 20 pounds. To lose 20 pounds you may have to make 6 choices, take 4 long term actions and do or not do 13 different things weekly.  You don’t have all of THAT on your list, so you’ll miss some of it and fail.

Compare that with this habit goal: Move until I sweat for 30 minutes/day.

The power of a habit is that after you lock them in (about 21 days) they are on autopilot and keep going!

For my Top 3- Building a Summit is a MASSIVE Goal and task. The habit goal I have is: Work on Summit 90 minutes daily. For my teaching, my habit goal is: Find new places/groups to teach twice each month. If I do that, by the end of March I’ll have taught 6 different groups of people.  Tomorrow,  I am teaching during a Vision Board Party :-) That is half of my January goal done!

Do you see how many easy it would've been to just have a goal to “Increase Income”?  To big, too loose, too easy to be unclear on what to do next, so we DON’T DO ANYTHING.

Go after building HABITS that will reach your goals and you will blow the doors off of it!

You’ll keep hearing from me this year on Fridays. I’ll share and teach and I hope it helps you. If this shifted something for you – please write and tell me! It keeps me going to hear from you…

    Happy New Year!

P.S. I was purposefully quiet over Christmas because if you are like me, my inbox was bursting with folks and I didn’t want my words to you to get lost in the noise…this subject is too important.

I had a quiet Christmas at home and feel very grateful starting this New Year. Thank you for sticking with me! We are GOING places this year and I am bring you with me!
