April 2017
Triple view core
Hi ,

Welcome to the second quarterly edition of OGSR Wireline 2017.

This edition is especially for all of our new friends from Houston! See what's happening now in Ontario, how to get great GIS maps made for you (of just about anywhere), and how to make the most of our data archive and library resources.

Let us know if you have any requests for future articles, and in the meantime,

Keep exploring,

First Look at 2016 Production Numbers
By Jordan

Report Downloads Included Below!

Early production numbers are in. Although not all returns have been audited the trend is clearly down in 2016 over 2015. Lack of new drilling starts and reductions in well treatments and stimulations have combined to produce a larger year-over-year slip this time. Nevertheless there remain over 1,200 active producing oil wells and 1,300 producing natural gas wells in the province. With activity levels so low the explorationists have their pick of Ontario’s juiciest targets.

For those unfamiliar with reporting requirements in Ontario, submissions are due on an annual basis. Reports are made in February of each year for the monthly production volume of a well or group of wells in the previous year. At the time of this article approximately 80% of reports by expected volume have been audited.

Projected 2016 oil production is around 344,000 barrels and the production of natural gas is around 5.4 BCF.

Table 1. Oil and Natural Gas Production Year over Year
Natural gas production appears to be reduced by 5% in 2016, an acceleration in the reduction after being almost flat from 2014 to 2015.

Oil decline accelerated sharply to 14% in 2016 over 2015 versus the 5% drop recorded from 2014 to 2015.

Activity levels explain these sharp declines. New drilling starts have been on the wane for the past decade and to compound the problem well treatments and stimulations have followed suit, especially is recent years.
Figure 1. Oil and Gas Well Drilling and Stimulation for the Past Decade

Industry activity remains near all-time lows. However, the OGSR Library did not collect records for over 27,000 drilled wells by seeing less than a handful of wells drilled per year. And despite low production some 2,500 producing wells remain active.

The current industry state represents opportunities for both exploration and development. Records from over 27,000 wells can be leveraged for either purpose. The OGSR Library archives contain reports, logs, samples, maps, and data to help you get started. Library staff are always available to help you find information on any subsurface activity and provide mapping and data aggregation services to support any endeavor.

For Exploration: Have a look at this members’ only report on Ordovician resources potential ($500 value). Up to half of oil all in this play may be undiscovered:

For Development: Well treatments have the potential to add value to old assets. With treatments and stimulations at an all-time low consider some inspiration from this Ontario enhanced recovery success story:

(s3.amazonaws.com/downloads.ogsrlibrary.com/open/Comprehensive-Engineering-Study-of-Columbus-Reservoir--Rodney-Field.pdf)

For Ontario: The special volume by Carter and Armstrong is the essential text for understanding Ontario for either exploration or development. Anyone familiar with Ontario has seen this book somewhere.

If you weren’t lucky enough to win this volume at our most recent exhibit in Houston you can purchase a copy for only $50 CAD (~$37.50 USD):
The Subsurface Paleozoic Stratigraphy of Southern Ontario contains detailed formation descriptions, wells logs, color photographs, and large fold-out charts.

Access to the Highest Quality Data

The geologic data at the OGSR Library spans 159 years, originating with the first commercial oil well in North America at Oil Springs in 1858. Over a century and a half of well files have been scanned and inputted into a comprehensive database, amounting to nearly 27,000 unique wells and nearly 500,000 geologic formation picks. This, in itself, is impressive enough, but you only have to dig a little deeper to find the reason our data is so unique. Since our facility houses the original drill cuttings for wells dating back to the 1800s, our geologists are able to quality check historic data. In recently completed and ongoing projects, nearly 40,000 quality assurance codes have been inputted. These allow our members to understand the reliability of formational picks!

The geology of Ontario can be further analyzed through our three types of physical samples:
  1. Drill Core: With over 1000 wells with drill core, you have access to the complete record of subsurface geology of southwestern Ontario from the Quaternary through to the Precambrian basement. Make use of drill core to view rock properties such as porosity, oil staining, and facies transitions

  1. Drill Cuttings: The OGSR Library has over 13,000 wells with drill cuttings. These drill cuttings are kept in vials, typically at ~3m sampling intervals. Drill cuttings are a more compact, valuable resource by which to do your basic geological analysis. Analyze mineralogy, grain size, and other mineral properties at ease. Ongoing QA/QC on the Library’s samples has ensured a reliable database of formation top picks by which to compare your analysis.

Our chemical suite (i.e. HCl acid, Alizarin Red, etc.) allows you to properly test samples, providing an extra line of evidence to reinforce your findings. Using our tools (sample trays, magnets, hand lenses, tweezers, etc.) you can observe samples under a variety of different microscopes (+fluoroscope). If you find something interesting, feel free to take a picture with our high-quality camera. You will also have access and the ability to contribute to our archive of drill cutting and drill core photos.

3. Geophysical Well Logs: Over 17,000 wells in the OGSR database have geophysical well logs. These logs are highly valuable in providing exact formation top picks. Hundreds of different log types are available, including: Gamma Ray, Neutron, Sonic, Density, and more! These logs are useful for lithology interpretation, permeability/porosity, and the location of water/hydrocarbon bearing zones. We also have an online geological cross-section tool available, where geophysical logs are correlated to view sub-surface formation tops.
Combine and Conquer!

At the OGSR Library, you have the unique ability to combine cutting samples, drill core, and geophysical well logs to aid in your geological analysis. Observe a facies change in a sample, but are unsure about the exact pick depth? Look at the associated geophysical logs to get an accurate estimate of the depth of transition. When possible, combining all three methods will help you correlate stratigraphy across a region, allowing you to identify geological features such as unconformities, faulting, and potentially structural traps!

Literature, Maps and Other Resources

The OGSR Library has numerous resources available for your use. Stratigraphic charts, geological maps, pool/pipeline maps, sample photographs, papers/theses, and well information for over 27,000 wells, including stratigraphy, production records, etc.

A few past and recent research projects using library data include:

GIS & Mapping Services

Membership with the OGSR Library provides you with a free download of Ontario’s base layers, in shapefile format. What better way to start exploring Ontario! Petroleum pools boundaries and subsurface geology are also available at a reduced cost for members. We will be completing an update to these layers within the next few months.

Want to conduct GIS analysis but don’t have access to mapping software or the expertise needed to get going? The OGSR Library has a team of mapping professionals who can help! Contact Liz at [email protected] for all mapping requests. The library recently purchased a license for Leapfrog Hydro for use in 3D mapping projects. What formations do you want to see in three dimensions?

What is the OGSR Library?

The Ontario Oil, Gas & Salt Resources Library is a not-for-profit corporation that manages all of Ontario's public drilling and production data from the petroleum and solution mined salt industries. This includes processing, storing, and providing safe and convenient access to all of the industry's drill core and rock cuttings. The Library makes as much of this data as possible available through our online portal to members all over the world. The financial support of the petroleum industry and our membership make this possible.

Please visit www.ogsrlibrary.com/membership_ontario_oil_gas_salt for more information on becoming a member and accessing data.
