Weighing yourself can actually sabotage your weight loss

Published: Fri, 09/23/16

Hi ,

Today I want to talk about something that many women do, it’s something that might seem pretty insignificant but it can have a profound effect on not only your weight release success but also your psyche...

Weighing scales!

This is something many of my clients are using when they first start working with me, and I always tell them to ‘step away from the scales’… In fact ideally I’d say never go near the scales ever again!

For some people the scales have become somewhat of a comfort – a kind of security blanket.

Yet in reality they’re actually a form of self-torture!

And here’s why:

  • They make you focus on ‘units’ – which leads to you being mentally bogged down with every nuance and fluctuation in your weight and that often equates to also monitoring calories in/out and fat content.
  • They affect your mood and set you up for a ‘bad’ day if you don’t like what you see on the scales. Who hasn’t got on the scales and seen a number that makes you then feel awful for the rest of your day?!
  • They don’t factor in all potential reasons for the weight gain or loss – such as constipation/diarrhea, fluid retention, time of the month, a large meal still processing through your body – all of those things could equate to a good 2-4lbs!
  • Muscle weighs more than fat by volume – if you’re doing exercise methods that build lean muscle mass (- such as barre) you can lose fat but also build muscle that weighs more – so in many ways ‘weight loss’ is irrelevant!
  • Here’s the most significant point: Using something outside of yourself to track and follow what’s happening to your body is just another way to disengage from your body’s intuition and inner knowing – it keeps you disconnected and reliant on things outside of yourself when your body knows best! In order to truly release the weight you need to TRUST your body and by weighing yourself and counting calories etc. you’re doing the complete opposite – You’re saying; I don’t trust you, I need to control you analytically – with my mind.

…So then is it no wonder we are confused in what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat?

…Those are just a few of the many reasons I never use scales and haven’t done for years – in fact I don’t even care what I weigh any more, I care about how I FEEL and what I look like, weight doesn’t even come into it.

  • And that is my wish for you if you struggle with your current weight.

My recommendation is to leave the scales well alone and focus on how you feel, how to your clothes feel. There’s no need to monitor this on a day-to-day basis, just check in with yourself once in a while.

If you must see some specific stats I’d recommend you take your measurements once a month and/or take photographs if you are working towards a health and fitness goal.

I’ll be sharing more on this subject over the coming weeks, but if this resonates with you, I’d really love for you to take my advice here and just try not to weigh yourself for a week – give it a go and let me know how you get on.

You can share in my private and supportive Facebook group where only members will see what you’re posting or simply hit reply to this email if you want to reply to me personally.
