This week we take a look at the South Carolina helicopter crash that reportedly involved a drone, find out that drone delivery could save the environment, are excited that NASCAR uses drones for the first time, plus we have some survey results on the FAA for you.

Did Drone Cause Helicopter Crash?
Investigations are still ongoing into whether a drone was involved in a helicopter crash that happened in South Carolina this week. According to reports, a drone appeared in front of the helicopter, which maneuvered to avoid the drone and in the process its tail struck a tree or dense brush causing it to crash land. The good news is all occupants of the helicopter were okay. The bad news is that this doesn't look good for drones. So far there has been no indication that the drone was flying in restricted airspace or was violating any FAA rules, though further investigations will shed more light on this fact. The helicopter was on a training mission and was hovering at low altitude in a rural area.

Stay tuned for more information on the investigation to see how much the drone in question was involved in the crash. If you fly drones, remember just because you are clear to fly in an airspace doesn't mean you can do whatever you like. You MUST always be LOOKING for and MUST always YIELD to manned aircraft. That means stay away from any helicopter or plane you might encounter!

Drone Delivery Can Save the Environment
A study released by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that small quadcopter drones consume less energy per package than traditional delivery trucks. The findings suggest that if used properly—drones for lighter packages, ground-based for heavier packages—the drone deliveries will help fight climate change because using them will reduce energy consumption and the emissions of greenhouse gases.

Daytona 500 Gets Drones!
Congratulations to Daytona 500 winner INSERT WINNER! As exciting as the race was it was even more exciting that it marked the first time drones were used to cover a NASCAR event. FOX Sports' coverage of the race included drone footage of the backstretch of the track. The drone was tethered for safety so it could remain in the air for the course of the race.

FAA Survey Results
Two weeks ago we told you about a survey our friends over at UAV Coach were doing to let the FAA know what the drone community thinks of their outreach efforts. The results are in!
