Snack Size Easter | Nutrition
With the Easter Bunny knocking on our doorsteps, it can be tempting to throw out our healthy diet in favour of delicious chocolate eggs. While it is okay to treat yourself over the long weekend, being mindful of portion sizes can help you stay on track. Remember: chocolate should be consumed as a snack, not in place of a nutritious meal.

Below is a list of common Easter treats, with their ideal portion sizes and how many exchanges are in each.
  • Mini Lindt Gold Bunny: 2 x 10g bunny = 10.2g carbs (0.5 exchange)
  • Cadbury Creme Egg Minis: 3 x 25g egg = 17.4 carbs (1.0 exchange)
  • Kinder Mini Bunny: 1 x 15g bunny = 8.1g carbs (0.5 exchange)
  • MaltEaster Bunny: 1 x 29g carbs (1.0 exchange)
  • Lindt Carrot: 1 x 13.5g = 6.4g carbs (0.5 exchange)
  • Mini Solid Eggs: 4 x 6g = 16g carbs (1.0 exchange)
  • Coles Mini Fruit Hot Cross Buns: 1 x 45g = 24g carbs (1.5 exchange)
Keep this list handy and you'll find it much easier to avoid overindulging this long weekend. To read more about the calorie and fat content in your Easter treats, click the link below.

+ CGM subsidies for under 21s | Education
The Australian Government recently announced they will now be providing subsidies for Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs). CGMs are small wearable devices that continually measure glucose levels. They also sounds an alarm if levels become too low or too high - valuable for parents monitoring children throughout the night.

This subsidy, accessible through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS), will be available to people under the age of 21 with Type 1 Diabetes who meet a specific criteria. This initiative makes access to CGMs financially easier, reducing stress for families and teenagers. This technology can help young people better manage their blood glucose levels, avoiding unexpected hypoglycaemia and possible diabetic ketoacidosis.

While we are still hopeful for subsidised CGMs for all ages, this is certainly a progressive step in the right direction. For those who do not know much about Continuous Glucose Monitoring and want to learn how to access a subsidised CGM, the DANII Foundation is hosting a National Information Roadshow. Dr Claire Morbey will be presenting at the Newcastle event, explaining how CGM technology works and why it is invaluable.

Our local event will be on May 1st at Souths Leagues Club in Merewether - just down the road from our centre. Attendance is free, but spots are limited, so bookings are recommended.

+ Live Your Life Expo | Events
A key part of effective diabetes treatment is providing ongoing education. Without sufficient knowledge of the condition, it is difficult for people to have the confidence to independently manage their diabetes. At Hunter Diabetes Centre, we are keen to be involved with as much diabetes education as possible. This is why we highly recommend events such as the Live Your Life Expo.

The Live Your Life Expo is run by Diabetes NSW & ACT and hosts a variety of educational workshops for people with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Our team will be holding an exhibition stand at the Expo, alongside two of our clinical trial partners, ENDIA and TrialNet. We will have information on our services and current clinical trials, so we'd love you to come by and say hello.

The full day event is held across the state, visiting Newcastle on May 20th at the Hunter Stadium Function Centre. Tickets are $15 for Diabetes NSW & ACT members and $20 for non-members, and you can book your spot below.
