The Australian Government recently announced they will now be providing subsidies for Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs). CGMs are small wearable devices that continually measure glucose levels. They also sounds an alarm if levels become too low or too high - valuable for parents monitoring children throughout the night.
This
subsidy, accessible through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS), will be available to people under the age of 21 with Type 1 Diabetes who meet a specific criteria. This initiative makes access to CGMs financially easier, reducing stress for families and teenagers. This technology can help young people better manage their blood glucose levels, avoiding unexpected hypoglycaemia and possible diabetic ketoacidosis.
While we are still hopeful
for subsidised CGMs for all ages, this is certainly a progressive step in the right direction. For those who do not know much about Continuous Glucose Monitoring and want to learn how to access a subsidised CGM, the DANII Foundation is hosting a National Information Roadshow. Dr Claire Morbey will be presenting at the Newcastle event, explaining how CGM technology works and why it is invaluable.
Our local event will be on May 1st at Souths Leagues
Club in Merewether - just down the road from our centre. Attendance is free, but spots are limited, so bookings are recommended.
