Today I am celebrating two weeks as Mrs Naomi De Ruiter (pronounced dee writer)! Ben and I got married on September 7th in a beautiful outdoor ceremony overlooking Shuswap Lake. Our day was
filled with family, friends, lots of laughter...and a few happy tears. (For a sneak peak of our wedding photos visit our photographer's blog at Sarah Lyndsay Photography.) The afternoon of September 7th Birdsong Princess Zara surprised me with the best wedding present for a Jersey girl—a beautiful heifer calf!
I named her Birdsong Princess Louise after Lake
Louise, one of the places that Ben and I visited on our honeymoon in Banff. Lake Louise was named after Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, and since this sweet heifer is from my "royal" cow family I thought that Louise was the perfect name for her!
But Louise's story didn't start the day she was born; it actually began nine months earlier. Zara was the first
Jersey that Ben bred, but she was so short that he had to get down on one knee to breed her! We weren't engaged yet, so I joked that he was practising for when he proposed to me—which he did in front of my Jerseys about five weeks later. Little did we know that Zara's calf would be born on our wedding day!
Birdsong Princess Sophie calved on August 29th with a handsome bull calf that I named Quigley. My neighbour's son adores him, and the other day he was telling me all about "his" calf. Aren't the two of them
cute?
If learning how to make cheese is on your bucket list for this year, there's still time to register for a mozzarella or Gouda cheese making workshop!
I'm teaching a mozzarella class at Little Straw Vineyards in West Kelowna the morning of Sunday, September 30th. All you need to
make a batch of mozzarella is 4 ingredients and 90 minutes so your cheese will be ready in time for lunch!
Next, I'll be teaching a Gouda class at Montana Hill Guest Ranch in Bridge Lake on Saturday, October 13th. If you've always wanted to try your hand at milking a cow, this is your chance to meet and milk
the ranch's Jersey milk cow, Lexi.
It's crazy to think that tomorrow is the first day of autumn! The leaves are already starting to change colour, and the mountain ash trees are laden with bright orange berries. Enjoy this beautiful season!
