Big changes at Birdsong Farm ~ The Moo's-Letter

Published: Tue, 08/15/17

Hi ,

It's hard to believe that we're in August already. Where is the year going?!

The best word for me to describe 2017 so far this year is CHANGE. At the end of January, the dairy farm where I'd worked and boarded my cows for the past 18 months closed down. Thankfully the dairy farmer that one of my brothers works for had room in his barn to house a few extra cows, and he kindly agreed to board my milking girls for me.

Then in the middle of March, I lost my job as the curator and archivist of my town's small museum. I knew that I enjoyed milking cows, feeding calves, and making cheese, so I started looking for a job in the dairy field and began working at The Village Cheese Company at the beginning of May. Working with cheese is fun (and tasty!), but I discovered that I really missed working with cows and so I recently left my job at Village Cheese for a chance to work with cows again.

But the best change of all is that I met this really awesome guy in early January, and we've been dating for the past six months. He's a dairy farmer, and I'm going to be working part time with him on his family's dairy farm. The rest of the time I'm going to be teaching cheese making workshops, and if you live in the Okanagan, Shuswap, or Thompson regions of British Columbia keep an eye out for a cheese making workshop at a winery near you!

P.S. What is your favourite winery? If it's in the Okanagan, Shuswap, or Thompson, please reply to this email and let me know--I'd love to teach a cheese making workshop there.
