How's your summer going, ?
Mine has been busy working alongside my fiancé and his family on their dairy farm, teaching cheese making workshops, planning my wedding, and
welcoming a bunch of new calves to the herd.
In July, my sweet Jersey girls broke our 2014 record of six calves born in one year with a new one of seven calves born in one month! This will be a hard record to break!
Birdsong Princess Charlotte kicked if off on July
4th with our first heifer of the year, Birdsong Princess Beatrix. She is growing like a weed and is the star of this month's cover photo.
The next five calves (two heifers and three bulls) were all siblings from my 13-year-old cow, Gaymar Astro Fancier, and were born between July 21st and 24th. Fancier died in March, but her legacy will live on in my herd with her two
daughters, Birdsong Sweet Summertime and Birdsong Gypsy Moon, while two of her sons, Birdsong Glacier Fire and Birdsong Northern Frost, will bring her genetics to other farms in the Shuswap and South Cariboo.
The month ended on a sad note when Birdsong Shirley Rose had a stillborn bull calf on July 29th.
