International Association of Directional Drilling Newsletter December Edition

Letter From the Executive Director
Our year is officially over, but the activity is not. We are already beginning planning for the first events of 2018. Keep on eye open for announcements and get the events on your calendar.

We are planning to have more initiatives in 2018, groups that will endeavor to effect changes and consistency in our industry. Wellbore quality indices, Metrics for MWD, Motor and Rotary Steerable operations, integrating with automated drilling services are all on the schedule. These are driven by our membership’s participation and input, so please take the opportunity to contribute. We are also looking to establish competency assessments that will allow personnel to demonstrate proficiency in their areas of expertise.

2017 has been a challenging but productive year for IADD. I want to thank the Staff, Board, Sponsors, Members and Volunteers who have contributed their time, talent and treasure to this success. Here’s to an even more productive 2018.

Sincerely,

Jim Oberkircher

Executive Director

IADD Sporting Clays Tournament 2017

Operation Military Embrace, Inc.
Operation Military Embrace, Inc., (“OME”) sincerely appreciates the support received from the IADD and the many fine service companies that participated in the annual IADD sporting clays shoot 1 December 2017. The sponsorship of two veterans teams of shooters by Evolution and Applied Physics enabled the IADD and OME to bring together a couple of fine teams of injured and retired veterans to participate in the shoot including veterans from the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as one “seasoned” vintage veteran who served in Vietnam through the Tet Offensive of 1968 and the engagements that followed. The veterans teams included an Army Ranger, 5 Marines, a Navy Corpsman (Doc to all Marines!) and a Coast Guardsman.  The participating veterans sincerely appreciated the warm hospitality and the support provided to OME and the B2B Ministry by the IADD and the sponsors.

OME has had the privilege of teaming up with the IADD since 2013 enabling OME to serve and support more than 38,844 injured, ill and deployed service members and family members bringing hope to those who have given so much in service to God and country.  The contribution of financial support and many volunteer hours by the IADD and its staff have made lives significantly better for America’s injured, ill and deployed Warriors and their families. OME cannot achieve its program objectives without the support of the IADD and its sponsors and the Officers, Directors and volunteers of OME know that the IADD and its sponsors are a true blessing.

Advanced Drilling Dynamics -- Beyond Monitoring
Ever-changing oilfield conditions are driving operators to find creative ways to drill more efficiently and survive the low-cost environment. When looking for inspiration from other industries, we find that best-in-class engineering teams effectively balance analytics, physical testing, and simulation. They have built smart analytics solutions upon a solid foundation of data generated by simulations, validated by well-coordinated physical test plans. They continuously refine the test plan, simulation models and analytical processes to maximize the value of lessons learned throughout the process.

Join the International Association of Directional Drilling (IADD) and our planning committee at the Applied Drilling Dynamics—Beyond Measurement Topical Forum, where we’ll explore the importance of drilling dynamics and the value associated with it. A mixture of presentations and panel discussions will highlight historical case studies, current industry best practices and emerging technologies, culminating in a vision of where the industry needs to be with regards to data collection, analytics and modeling.

January Monthly Luncheon - "Well Planning"

Operators are faced with increasing challenges to economically develop hydrocarbon resources.  To fully utilize the wells production potential longer horizontal sections are being drilled and completed. The construction of 10K+ ERD wells especially represents significant engineering challenges. Substantial increases in Torque & Drag that are associated with increasing horizontal wellbore departure pose increasing difficulties to control the BHA. Frequently the increased circulation pressure also limits the torque / power capability of the motor and is an additional contributor to some of the disappointing drilling rates seen in long horizontal applications.

During the planning phase of a well, it is critical that factors influencing the successful completion of a well are well understood and incorporated into the well plan. A clear definition of the critical line items will also aid in establishing a better risk assessment and ultimately results into a higher certainty for success. As a result, key performance indicators can be established to initiate an optimization process that will yield continuous improvement.

On January 25th, 2018 the IADD will provide a forum for software providers, well planners, directional coordinators and drilling engineers to explore the well planning process and its mission-critical elements. The event will consist of various presentations and discussions to provide an update on the state of the art and provide a view for future developments that would assist in approving the accuracy of the planning process.
