International Association of Directional Drilling Newsletter January Edition

Published: Tue, 01/16/18

Letter From the Executive Director
This year certainly opens up with more optimism than the past two years. The industry has rebounded and people are busy again. This has created a new set of challenges as people and equipment once more become an issue in some cases.

This is a new year for IADD too. We want to expand our role in disseminating information, becoming the go to source for information about the directional industry. This creates an opportunity for our members to learn and to share. If you have information, new tools or techniques, applications, lessons learned, these can all be published to the industry at large. The more awareness that we have, the
better off everyone is.

We also want to become more actively engaged with the operators, understanding what their needs and expectations are. The Directional industry has achieved many great accomplishments, but there is still work to be done. It will take a collective effort to achieve this. Here is to a safe and prosperous New Year for all

Sincerely,

Jim Oberkircher

Executive Director

Q1/2018 Director of Houston Chapter Report

Throughout 2017, the IADD Houston chapter focused on delivering technical content and offering a platform for the drilling industry to share best practices, present new ideas and technologies, and provide learning opportunities for those new to the subject.

We ended the year with our annual clay shoot on December 1, which was well attended. Highlights included: morning and afternoon shooting sessions, auctioning off two guns, sponsor company product displays and sponsored meal deliver.

During 2018, we plan to continue building on our positive experiences and are in the process of finalizing topics and speakers.

  • For the first quarter, we will discuss well planning processes, present research completed on wellbore quality, and evaluate downhole data acquisition technology.

  • We plan to kick off the second quarter with a discussion around rig capability and surface control systems. Successful directional drilling is not only a function of the BHA and downhole operation conditions. It is also influenced by how effectively the surface control system delivers RPM, WOB and torque.

  • High-powered motor technology, followed by a discussion of near-bit measurements will complete the first half of our 2018 program.

At this point, we would like to express our thanks to our sponsors, members, event participants, presenters, panelists, and the staff of the IADD who all have contributed to our success.

Sincerely,

Roland Illerhaus

Advanced Drilling Dynamics -- Beyond Monitoring
The agenda has been set for the Advanced Drilling Dynamics—Beyond Measurement Topical Forum, where we’ll explore the importance of drilling dynamics and the value associated with it. Last chance to register and join us for a mixture of presentations and panel discussions will highlight historical case studies, current industry best practices and emerging technologies, culminating in a vision of where the industry needs to be with regards to data collection, analytics and modeling.

January Monthly Luncheon - "Well Planning"

Operators are faced with increasing challenges to economically develop hydrocarbon resources.  To fully utilize the wells production potential longer horizontal sections are being drilled and completed. The construction of 10K+ ERD wells especially represents significant engineering challenges. Substantial increases in Torque & Drag that are associated with increasing horizontal wellbore departure pose increasing difficulties to control the BHA. Frequently the increased circulation pressure also limits the torque / power capability of the motor and is an additional contributor to some of the disappointing drilling rates seen in long horizontal applications.

During the planning phase of a well, it is critical that factors influencing the successful completion of a well are well understood and incorporated into the well plan. A clear definition of the critical line items will also aid in establishing a better risk assessment and ultimately results into a higher certainty for success. As a result, key performance indicators can be established to initiate an optimization process that will yield continuous improvement.

On January 25th, 2018 the IADD will provide a forum for software providers, well planners, directional coordinators and drilling engineers to explore the well planning process and its mission-critical elements. The event will consist of various presentations and discussions to provide an update on the state of the art and provide a view for future developments that would assist in approving the accuracy of the planning process.

The presentation will show how WellScan is used in the planning stages of a well to identify potential risks in terms of anti-collision, T&D, and BHA capabilities. Then will show the use of the software in optimizing the well by eliminating/mitigating the potential risks and ensuring the success of the well.
