Dear ,

And it begins... the holiday season.

I'm so lucky to live in upstate NY, where it has just begun to snow.  The girls are almost three now, so it's really fun to watch them learn about snow, as well as the holiday season. And I am enjoying every second as we explore on our daily walks in the neighborhood park, which has an amazing light display for the season. (I have to walk every day for my back to heal properly.)

This year, it seems, is chock full of parties. Sure, I'll be hosting my annual holiday party, Yule Britannia, this year on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas), but we've been invited to several holiday parties and get-togethers as well.

I'm excited about it. Not just because everyone is in the holiday spirit despite what gloom and doom the media is telling us, but that it gives me an opportunity to network with others in a more casual way.

Want to know my secret of great networking? Take along your own PR person. Seriously. Read this week's feature article to find out how.

Speaking of networking, social media must be part of your publicity plan. And I'll be talking all about it as it relates to working with the media at the Social Media with Curves virtual event on December 9. It's going to be loads of fun, as a bunch of my gal pals including Mari Smith, Nancy Marmolejo, and WendyY Bailey, among others, will be on hand to discuss other aspects of social media.  Plus, I have exclusive VIP passes that save you $70 on the two-day event, so your cost is only $27!  Grab your spot today by going to this exclusive link: http://socialmediatelesummit.com/shannon.

I hope to 'see' you there!

Use a publicity agent for networking

Networking is indispensable these days, but if you go to business events and no one remembers you afterward, you've wasted your time. Such contacts only work if you make yourself memorable. Yet, I never stop being amazed how many talented and well-educated people often do not know how to maximize these events.

Here's an easy way you can make the most of networking events.

I call it the "have your own publicity agent" technique. It's simple and costs nothing. Enlist a co-sales professional, friend, or fellow speaker to form a duo. I often use my husband in this role.

Here's what we do. When we arrive at an event, we alternately separate and come together. I'll walk up to Matt as he is talking to someone, and he'll say, "Larry, let me introduce you to Shannon Cherry, my partner. She is truly one of the greatest PR practitioners in the country. She's even gotten three people on the Oprah Winfrey Show."

And, I will turn around and say, "Larry, I bet Matt is too modest to tell you he's a UN representative that works on religious freedom issues throughout the world." When you do this, just as Matt and I do, you're saying great things about each other that you'd love your prospects to know, but modesty prevents you from telling them.

The key to connection is conversation. The secret of conversation is to ask questions. The quality of the information you receive depends on the quality of your questions. If you have a conversation it may lead to a relationship. A relationship could lead to new business. A business relationship when nurtured can and will lead to long term success.
