Hi ,
As always, I hope you are well. Over the last few days I have been watching the European Athletic Championships and as usual there have been some surprises and disappointments. Some of the athletes that were expected to do well for Ireland (like David Gillick) did not get where they hoped to. Others (like Derval O'Rourke) stepped up and shone. Some (like Alisdair Cragg) did not even finish their race...
For some of them it was as if the reality of the occasion actually crushed them, for others it was as if they found their true strength and confidence.
So what has all this got to do with negative people? Well, one of the things that is being constantly recommended to those of us who are interested in personal development, is to stay away from negative people.
But alas, most of us work/live with people who are negative at least some of the time...so how about reframing this?
It's easy to be positive when you are around positive people..the question is..can you be positive when the people around you are moaning non-stop about their lives, their jobs, their families etc.? Suppose these are people you have to spend time with e.g. family, work colleagues.
THAT is your championship challenge. How can you stay positive and loving when you are with people you find negative and draining?
What would be some ways to make it more likely that you can perform at your best in this particular race..
-
Only focus on your own race. Simply listen, do not argue with or try to dissuade negative people. It simply distracts you and fuels them.
-
Time it. Notice when you are starting to feel bored and irritated by them. Set yourself a time limit and then move away - with courtesy.
-
Championship mettle: See these encounters as being a way to really know how positive you are..can you stay calm and grounded while they moan on? If so, you are making progress. If not, ask yourself where you need to grow.
-
Listen -without agreeing - to them. Most negative people are unhappy and dissatisfied. When you listen to them without trying to change them (or without getting into the pool with them), they will start to like you and listen to you and you may find that you have more (positive) influence with them than you realise.
Take Action!
This week, when you find yourself in a situation where you are with people who are behaving negatively...see it as a chance to put your work on positivity to the test...
Upcoming workshops..
I will (in conjunction with others) be hosting some teleclasses and workshops over the coming months...I would love if you joined me for some of them..
