What do you do when dreams die? Bring your best self to light - October 2010. Sent Monday, October 4, 2010
What do you do when dreams die?
Hi ,

As always I hope you are well. One of the themes that has been occupying my mind as I look around in this turbulent time is where is the comfort for dead dreams?

What do you do when you have given your dream your very best shot and it just hasn't turned out as intended or planned?
  • The footballers who get defeated in the final after giving it their very best all year round?
  • The man or woman whose marriage fails - even though they have tried and tried.
  • The entrepreneur who sees his business fail after trying everything and always acting in the most ethical service oriented way possible.
  • The people who lost their  homes despite trying all sorts of sensible plans to re-negotiate and manag
  • The artist who has poured his her very best efforts onto the page or canvas - only to find themselves rejected yet again and unable to make a living from what they love.
I get really bored with the pundits who bleat out the platitudes about how failure was the best thing that happened to them (usually said 5 years later when they have achieved success - maybe in something else). Failure is a very horrible feeling - particularly after really giving it everything. And the aftermath of failure is a dark, lonely place.

Maybe what we need is a dream graveyard - a place to go to mourn those defeats and losses. We need a dream funeral - some way of bringing closure to this defeat and pain. A place to have a dream eulogy...

Take Action

  • If you have any dreams that you know have died or you have to let go of...could you write them a letter thanking them for what they gave you but also expressing your grief at their demise?
  • If a much cherished dream has died, don't rush out to get a new one (if a much loved family member has died, it's  usually not a good idea to run out and locate a replacement) - give yourself time to mourn and reflect.
  • How can you be kind to yourself during this time?
  • If you know of others who has lost dreams...be kind to them too...
