Five Fab Facebook Tutorials

I receive several Facebook "friend" requests daily from people I've never heard of. My dilemma, like that of most Facebook users, is whether to accept every friend request or whether to filter my friends.

My choice: filter friends.

I reserve my personal Facebook profile for interacting with relatives and people I've known a long time.
I created a Blogging Bistro Facebook Business Page to interact with everyone else.

It works for me because I like to keep my business life and personal life separate (besides, Facebook "rules" say you're not supposed to promote/sell products or services via your personal account - they can shut down your account if they catch you cheating).

When I set up my FB Business Page, Facebook didn't offer the option to create a page that was unconnected to a personal account (or if they did, I didn't know about it).

Now they do. And it only takes five minutes to create a page for your business.

In this issue of Bright Ideas, you'll find five tutorials to help you stand out on Facebook; be sure to read the entire issue so you can find the tutorial that best fits your needs.

TUTORIAL #1
How to create a business page that IS connected to your personal profile

  1. Log in to your Facebook account.
  2. Click "Home."
  3. In the lefthand sidebar, scroll down to "Ads and Pages" and click the link.
  4. Click "Create Page."
  5. Indicate whether your page is for a) local business, b) brand, product, or organization, or c) artist, band, or public figure.
  6. Give your page a name. The name you give your Page is permanent, so make sure it's the one your fans and customers will recognize.
  7. Check the box that indicates you're the official representative of your business after reading through 2 pages of Rights and Responsibilities.
  8. Click "Create Official Page" and you're done.
As an alternative, you can create a Group (of Facebook members who share a hobby or professional interest) from this same location.

TUTORIAL #2
How to create stand-alone business page or Facebook Group
  1. Go to www.facebook.com (if you already have a Facebook account, log out).
  2. Scroll to the very bottom of your screen and click "Advertising."
  3. Near the top of your screen (on the left), click Pages.
You'll see a big green button on the right that says, "Create a Page." Click it.
  4. Follow the instructions for creating your new page (same as above).
  5. After saving your page, enter a valid e-mail address, and when you receive a validation e-mail, click to link to confirm that you're a real person.
  6. You're done!
TUTORIAL #3
How to create a branded "vanity" Facebook username

You can create a vanity URL for both your personal profile and your business page(s). You don't need any followers on your personal account to get a custom username, but you must have 25 followers on your PAGE before you can set up a vanity URL.

Follow the instructions here:
http://www.facebook.com/username/

TUTORIAL #4
How to add an e-newsletter subscription form to your Facebook Business Page

Use this technique to add a subscription form, a "follow me on Twitter" clickable link, YouTube videos, and other HTML-based graphics to your Facebook page.
  1. Add the Static FBML application to your Facebook page.
  2. From your Facebook page, Click on "Edit Page" (upper lefthand corner, directly below your profile picture).
  3. Scroll down until you see the FBML application. Click "Edit" (or the little pencil icon).
  4. In "Box Title," give your navigation button a name, such as "E-Newsletter Signup."
  5.  Paste in the form code generated by your e-newsletter service into the main content area.
  6. Save changes.
  7. Go back to your page's Wall and check out your navigation tabs (your new e-newsletter form tab likely won't display, so click the PLUS sign at the far right of your tabs. Grab your new tab and drag it into your main tab area).
TUTORIAL #5
