Savvy Book Marketing Tips

Hello ,
In last week's webinar about promoting fiction, Joanna Penn stressed the importance of making sure that your book is ready for prime time before you begin promoting it. Success for any type of book begins with a well written and edited book, a great cover, and a compelling title and sales copy.
Those points are echoed in this article from the Huffington Post about the factors that tend to limit the success of indie authors.
Even if a book is already published, self-published authors can still make improvements to enhance sales. Both ebooks and print-on-demand books can be revised and re-submitted if necessary. It's easy to make changes on most ebook publishing platforms - you can upload a revised cover or book text, revise the book description, and even change the price. For printed books, check with your printer or publisher to find out what's involved and what the fees are.
Nonfiction book titles and subtitles should contain important keywords to help shoppers find them on Amazon. For tips on enhancing the sales copy (book description) that you use on book covers, online bookstores, and your website, see these articles:
For nonfiction books:

Drafting Your Back Cover Sales Copy by Dan Poynter

How to Craft Back Cover Copy that Sells Books by the Boatload by Eric Gelb

For novels:

How To Write a Back Blurb For Your Book, by Joanna Penn

Read on for more book marketing resources.
Video Marketing
Nonfiction authors, don't miss this 6-minute video from Kathleen Gage explaining how to use YouTube videos to drive traffic to your website and build your opt-in mailing list.
Ebook Publishing News
Ebook sales continue to grow like crazy. The Pew Internet and American Life Project reported that ownership of tablets and ebook readers nearly doubled over the recent holiday period, contributing to the ever expanding market for ebooks.
A large number of authors have pulled their books from Nook and other ebookstores in order to join Amazon's KDP Select program. Some authors have been very pleased with the results, while others have concerns about Amazon's requirements for exclusivity. If you are still undecided, please read this article to learn more about the pros and cons of KDP Select.
Ebook authors, you can network with other authors and learn more about Kindle publishing on the Kindle Forum. There's even a section where you can promote your books. As with all forums, be sure to read the rules and observe etiquette.
Children's Book Marketing
Children's authors, don't forget that Children's Book Week is May 7-13. Learn more at http://bookweekonline.com and be sure to plan some special publicity and promotion during that time.
The Frugal Book Promoter
Carolyn Howard-Johnson is celebrating the release of the Kindle version of The Frugal Book Promoter, 2nd edition, by giving away more than a dozen free reports with the purchase of the ebook. See http://frugalbookpromoter.homestead.com/ for details and check out the bonus reports listed at the bottom of that page. Carolyn completely updated The Frugal Book Promoter several months ago, and the revised paperback version now features 416 pages of book promotion advice!
Indie Bookstore Opportunity
In mid-March, author Jon Renaud is opening the Back to the Books bookstore in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Jon is planning to feature indie books in his store and he's looking for independent fiction and nonfiction authors with an inventory of books on hand who would be interested in having their books stocked in the store. If you're interested, contact Jon at foxxgrp@gmail.com.
Thanks all the news for now. Have a wonderful week!

Savvy Book Marketing Tips

Hello ,
Recently I saw an author comment online that she didn't like to read books, and I pondered how that must make writing and selling books a challenge.

Reading helps us to develop our writing skills, but studying our own book selection and acquisition style can help us to understand the book buying behavior of our target customers.

This week I wrote a article for my newsletter subscribers with some thoughts on what we can learn about book promotion from our own book buying habits.

Remember, you have exclusive access to the complete archive of newsletter feature articles.

Ebook Publishing News

If you publish Kindle books (and you should!) you face an important decision about whether or not to enroll in Amazon's new KDP Select program. See this article for more on the pros and cons of this program.
I have a separate blog for ebook publishing information and resources at www.SavvyEbookPublishing.com. To keep up to date with ebook publishing news, you can subscribe to that blog's RSS feed.
On Monday I published a news column with updates about library lending, KDP Select, Apple's new iBooks Author, and the explosive growth in tablet and e-reader ownership in the past month.

Book Marketing Resources

Remember that the deadlines are approaching for several book awards contests. See a list of upcoming book award contests.

Children's book authors, you may want to check out the Mom's Choice Awards. They have a flyer with more information about their book awards here.

If you missed last week's training program, How to Make Money with Teleseminars and Webinars, it's now available in video format.
In case you missed it on my blog, be sure to read Patricia Fry's article, Use the Power of Local Promotion.

If you dream of landing a traditional publishing contract for your novel, the deadline for entering the Amazon Breakthrough Novel contest is February 5, but it's advisable to enter ASAP because they only accept the first 5,000 entries.

How to Promote Your Novel - February 9

While some book marketing strategies apply to all types of books, there are real differences between promoting novels and nonfiction books. I'm thrilled to be hosting novelist and book marketing expert Joanna Penn for a webinar on February 9: How to Promote Your Novel: 21 Ways to Sell More Books Online.

There aren't many training programs available that address the specific needs of novelists, so this will be a real treat. In the past year, Joanna has sold more than 18,000 copies of her independently published novels Pentecost and Prophecy, and she has a wealth of marketing knowledge to share.

That's all the news for now. I wish you a wonderful and productive week!

Warm Regards,
Dana

Savvy Book Marketing Tips

Hello ,
With the holidays over and the dawn of a new year upon us, now is the ideal time to focus on how to maximize book sales in the coming year.
There are many ways to promote a book, and we all have limited time and budgets. A solid book marketing plan is essential for clarifying your marketing strategies and prioritizing your book promotion activities.
Take action now to develop or update your book marketing plan by downloading my new complimentary report, Create a Book Marketing Plan That Sells Books.
Upcoming Training Programs
Thank you to everyone who participated in last month's book marketing survey. Most authors who responded to the survey indicated an interest in training programs, and I already have two new webinars scheduled:

How to Make Money with Teleseminars and Webinars - January 19

Teleseminars and webinars are a powerful tool for nonfiction authors to build their author platform, grow a mailing list, and make money.
With a teleseminar, you can share the message of your book, do educational presentations, interview other authors and experts, hold group coaching sessions, and more. Attendees listen to teleseminars by phone or online, from the comfort of their home or office. Webinars have an added visual component such as a slideshow.

Learn more and register here.

Publicity for Books and Authors
Getting publicity in print, broadcast or online media is a terrific way to promote books and authors. One way to get media attention is to tie your book to current events, holidays or special times of the year. In fact, there are days, weeks, and months designated for just about anything you can think of, from National Fitness Month to Dress Up Your Pet Day.
Literary publicist Paul Krupin offers a complimentary publicity planning calendar for 2012, listing dozens of special days, weeks and months, along with publicity planning tips.

Savvy Book Marketing Tips

Hello ,

Welcome to the re-designed Savvy Book Marketing Tips newsletter! I hope you will enjoy the new format.

To your publishing success!
Dana Lynn Smith

Common Mistakes on Author Websites

Your author website or blog is one of your most valuable marketing tools. Here are some of the most common mistakes that I see on author websites:

* Not featuring the book prominently on the home page. Display the
book cover to attract interest and link to a full description of the
book.
* Failing to write a compelling book description that motivates
buyers. Be sure to highlight your top review quotes and feature reader
benefits for nonfiction books
* No call to action inviting readers to buy the book.
* Pointing book buyers to a subsidy publisher's website rather than Amazon.
* Lack of an opt-in mailing list offer with an attractive incentive to sign up.
* No links to the author's social network pages or no way to contact the author.
* Clutter, poor design or difficulty in navigating the site.

Upcoming Learning Events for Authors

As part of the new ezine design, I've added an upcoming events section in the right column.

Kicking off this month is the virtual book tour for my newest book, Virtual Book Tour Magic, on December 1-9. Be sure to sign up for the tour feed so you'll get a notice of each tour stop.

Tour Special: Everyone who purchases Virtual Book Tour Magic by December 12 will get an invitation to my exclusive book tour QandA session on December 15!

Coming up on December 13, I'm thrilled to be hosting one of my favorite marketing experts, Kathleen Gage, for a complimentary webinar: Who Else Wants to be a Kindle #1 Bestseller. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from a highly successful author and online marketer.

And on December 15, Kathleen Gage is presenting another complimentary webinar that will be of special interest to nonfiction authors: How to Build a Six Figure Business from The Ground Up.
I've already got several great programs in the works for January and February featuring top book marketing experts, so stay tuned for details!

What Do You Need to Sell More Books?

Writing a book is a huge accomplishment and a major investment of time, but many authors are unprepared for the next job: selling their book. Even if you're working with a traditional publisher, you're still responsible for much of the book promotion.

My mission at The Savvy Book Marketer is to teach authors the skills they need to sell more books. In the right column, you can see a list of the step-by-step book marketing guides that I have developed over the past four years.

I'm looking forward to creating lots of new content for authors in the upcoming year, but I need your help.

* What are your greatest challenges in promoting your books?

* What kind of marketing guides or training programs would be most useful to you?

* How can The Savvy Book Marketer support you in selling more books?

Please take a few moments to share your thoughts in this quick survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YJCMXNL.

At the end of the survey, you will have the opportunity to enter a drawing to win the Savvy Book Marketer Guide of your choice. Five winners will be drawn.

Blogging Resources for AuthorsAn author blog is one of the very best ways to promote yourself and your books. To learn more about blogging, see my blogging resources page and also check out these articles:

=====================================================
Marketing Tips for Children's BooksRecently subscribers shared these tips for promoting children's books:
Try to search out alternative promotional outlets (by this I mean non-traditional book marketing avenues) based on your book's theme. For example, my picture book, The Busy Life of Ernestine Buckmeister, celebrates the joy of play and I've been able to successfully tap into the multitude of pro-play blogs and websites by introducing them to my book and our shared message. Many of these blogs who don't usually review picture books, were happy to do so since my book dovetailed nicely with their theme. Think creatively about how you can reach your audience based on your book's unique selling proposition.

-- Linda Ravin Lodding, author of The Busy Life of Ernestine Buckmeister

Enter your book into competitions. I always get a bump in my sales within a month of the final judging date.

-- Liz Yardley, author of The Firefly Legacy adventure series for girls

I am attending a large Girl Scout conference, Girltopia, where I have a booth with another author. This event is attended by thousands of girls in the Los Angeles area

-- Karen Mueller Bryson, author of The Incredibly Awesome Adventures of Puggie Liddell

Always make it sound fun and exciting.

-- Stacie Williams, author of The House with 9 Rooms

=====================================================
The Magic of Virtual Book ToursYou may have heard that virtual book tours are a terrific way to promote books, but maybe you're wondering exactly what a tour is and how it will benefit you.
On a virtual book tour, you will promote your book by making virtual guest appearances during a particular time frame on venues such as blogs, podcasts, radio shows, and social networks. At each tour stop you'll have the opportunity to showcase your work and reach a targeted audience of potential book buyers.
Here are just a few of the reasons to do your own virtual book tour:
* You can reach a large well-targeted audience with a virtual tour. In contrast, live appearances by authors who aren't famous usually have low attendance.
* Your tour hosts will give you exposure to their readers, listeners and followers - potential buyers that you might not reach in any other way.
* The virtual tour provides quality, lasting links to your website. These links have search engine optimization value and can continue to provide new visitors to your website (and new book sales) for months or years to come.
* Virtual tours are generally less expensive and time consuming than traveling tours, and you can conduct the entire tour from the comfort of home. In fact, if you organize your virtual tour yourself, there's little or no cost to you.

Social Network and Blog Ideas for NovelistsFiction authors, do you find it a challenge to come up with things to talk about on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, or in your blog? Here are some ideas:
* Try to describe one of your characters in a 140-word Tweet.
* On Facebook, post an intriguing sentence (or partial sentence) from your book that shows off your writing skills and piques the interest of the reader to want to hear more. Include the name of the book and a short link to your book sales page.
* Talk about the next book you're writing, how you are progressing, and what the challenges are.
* Celebrate milestones in your writing or publishing journey.
* Talk about the authors and books that inspired you in your writing or the books you are reading now.
* Do a mini-review of another book in your genre and tag the author in the post if possible.
* Ask others what they are reading right now and what they think of the book.
* Talk about anything in the news that's tied to some theme in your novel - like the location, professions or hobbies of the main characters, or the storyline.
* Ask your followers for ideas or opinions on things like character or place names, your book cover, or promotional ideas.
As a novelist, you have plenty of creativity. Take some time to start a list of ideas and add to the list as new ideas occur. It's okay to repeat some things on Twitter, but wait several weeks before you do a repeat.

Savvy Book Marketing Tips from Dana Lynn Smith Hello ,
We have lots of new subscribers this month, so welcome to everyone. In today's newsletter, you'll find these book marketing tips and resources:
* Build Relationships with Influencers
* Upcoming Events
* Promoting Children's Books
* Big Changes at Facebook
Have a wonderful and productive week, and remember to do something every day to promote your book!

Dana

Build Relationships with InfluencersOne of the best ways to promote your book is to get in front of the audience of other people who reach your target market. Influencers in your target market could include other experts in your field, other authors in your genre, book reviewers, journalists, bloggers, radio hosts, and newsletter editors.
Here are some ways to network with people who reach your target audience:
* Connect on social networks and interact with them.
* Make thoughtful comments on their blog posts or online articles.
* Invite them to guest post on your blog.
* Review their books and post the review on your blog, Amazon, and reader communities such as GoodReads, LibraryThing or Shelfari.
* Re-tweet their relevant posts on Twitter.
Once you have developed a relationship with others (or they at least know who you are) you can approach them suggesting ways that you might work together. For example, you might pitch an interview or guest post, send a review copy of your book, or suggest some type of joint venture.
Remember that you should be providing mutual value. For example when you guest post on someone's blog, you are providing valuable content to their readers (and saving them from writing a post that day) while you benefit from getting exposure to their audience.

Upcoming EventsIf you haven't yet published your book in ebook format, don't miss my no-cost webinar October 6 with Shelley Hitz on how to publish your ebook on multiple platforms. Get more details and register here for Ebook Publishing Basics for Authors.

Join me and 13 other speakers for the online Book Marketing Conference sponsored by D'vorah Lansky at Authors Marketing Circle. I'll be teaching a workshop, The Secrets to Planning a Profitable Virtual Book Tour, on October 5.

Promoting Children's BooksAlthough the basic marketing principles are the same for all types of books, there are some differences in the techniques used to promote fiction, nonfiction and children's books.
If you're a children's book author or publisher, or a book marketing expert, please share your top children's book marketing tip on this page.

I'll draw a name from all of the submissions received by October 10 to win a complimentary copy of the Savvy Book Marketing Guide of your choice.

Big Changes at FacebookFacebook is constantly evolving and several big changes have been announced in the past few weeks, including yet another redesign of the profile. Profit from Nonfiction Content
Nonfiction authors have a variety of opportunities to spin off their content into multiple formats which can be sold or given away to promote paid products and services. Take a good look at all of the articles, books, newsletters, reports, ebooks, podcasts, speeches, videos, and other content that you have produced on your topic, and then think about how to profit from repurposing it. Here are some ideas to get you started:
* Offer complimentary reports or ebooks in PDF format as a bonus to encourage people to opt-in to your mailing list.

* Create bonus products to go with your paid products and programs.

* Create short PDF or digital ebooks by breaking your book apart into sections.

* Use a collection of related articles to create an ebook.

* Have someone transcribe and edit the content of your teleseminars or podcasts and turn them into reports or ebooks.

* Use your content to create a series of PowerPoint slides and host a live webinar.

* Sell the video version of the webinar afterward.

* Convert an educational webinar or video to DVD format and sell it. Consider using CreateSpace.com for production and fulfillment.

* Create a home study course featuring ebooks, audio and/or video.

Upcoming Events
