Ernie Groscup Beef Memorial Class

"Buckaroo Leather has been apart of the Ernie Groscup Beef Memorial Class at the Tehama District Fair in red bluff Ca for the past four years. The class forces on rewarding the kids that work so hard all year with there beef projects. We would not be able to have such an amazing class without the wonderful support of Buckaroo Leather. The people apart of Buckaroo Leather are more than just people they are there to build friendships and work hard for you. Thank you Buckaroo Leather for all the support you have given our class and the lifelong friendship we share. On behalf of the Ernie Groscup Beef Memorial Class I say thank you."...... Sincerely Tiffany Groscup

Buckaroo Leather Products is very proud and honored to be a sponsor of this amazing class. The Ernie Groscup Beef Memorial is a class that is held annually at the Tehama District Fair in honor of Cattleman Ernie Groscup.

Ernie Groscup lived for the cattle industry, especially in Tehama county and especially for passing his knowledge and experience on to the youth of Tehama County. A normal weekend in the Groscup household involved loading up the purebred Limousin cattle and heading off to whatever fair, jackpot, State or National competition happened to be going on at the time.

Ernie sadly passed away in 2011 and in honor of his dedication to the youth of Tehama County his daughter has started a beef class that is held every year at the Tehama District Fair.

The class is a voluntary class that all kids who are showing beef cattle can participate in. The class consists of a Q&A session where we ask the kids different questions related to the Beef industry. This prepares each showman for the different questions they could be asked by judges while in the show ring. It is also meant to educate the showman about the Beef industry and to test their knowledge of the animal they have worked so hard to raise.

If you are in the area please take the time to visit the Tehama Fair and the Ernie Groscup Beef Memorial.

Rescue at Pine Ridge

A Great read for all you American History enthusiasts.

Rescue at Pine Ridge is the story of the 9th Cavalry from its Congressional conception in 1866, to the rescue of the famed 7th Cavalry by the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, 1890. The 7th Cavalry was entrapped again, after the Little Big Horn Massacre, fourteen years later, the day after the Wounded Knee Massacre. If it wasn't for the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, there would of been a second massacre of the 7th Cavalry.

Carrot and Kale Soup

serves 6 people

Ingredients:

1 medium fennel bulb, coarsely diced.
3 tbsp olive oil
1 cup onion diced.
2 garlic cloves peeled (left whole)
1 lb carrots peeled and sliced into 1 inch pieces
plus 4 whole carrots chopped into 2 inches pieces.
4-6 medium sized sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 2 inch pieces
1 16oz bag of fresh chopped kale
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp paprika
2 tsp thyme leaves
1 tsp coriander powder
4 cups chicken or vegetable broth

first need to remove the fronds from the fennel bulb and cut the fennel bulb into slices about 1/4 of an inch thick and coarsely chop. In a 12 qt dutch oven, heat the oil over medium heat, adding the fennel, onion, and garlic, cook until all ingredients are just tender.

next, add the carrots, sweet potato, kale, salt, coriander, paprika and thyme. stir so that all of your seasonings are mixed well. now, add the chicken broth to cover the vegetables and bring this to a boil. move the dutch oven to low heat and simmer until vegetables are fork tender. this should take around 35 minutes.

while the soup is cooking, place the fennel seeds in a small cast iron skillet over medium heat and toast a minute or two in a very small amount of olive oil until the fennel seeds turn a golden brown color and lightly crispy in texture. be careful to not burn them, gently toasting the seeds gives them a milder and sweeter flavor than right out of the spice jar. set aside the toasted fennel seeds.

when the soup is done, sprinkle a few of the fennel seeds on top as a garnish. Texas toast goes along well with this soup. just arrange the garlic bread slices in aluminum foil packet for toasting and toss on the swing grill for heating. oh and those left over 4 whole cut up carrots...why those are for your favorite equine of course

Justin Dunn and Fair Play Horses

In Early May of this year, 34 horses in very poor condition were seized by state authorities from a ranch in Fairplay, Colorado. They were brought to the sale barn in Salida, Colorado where the state veterinarian examined them. The local Brand Inspector believes each of the remaining horses can overcome their current challenges and be viable riding or companion horses within a few short months.

Fairplay Horses is  a local group which is seeking funding to help support anyone who wishes to open their heart and barn to one or more of these wonderful horses. We have been spending time with them morning and night, supplementing their feed, stroking their noses, and generally doing everything we can to help them begin their new lives.

Justin Dunn Mustang Horsemanship is training two of these rescue horses, Star and Lily. Both will be available for adoption at the end of their training. Both Star and Lily were pretty wild and untouched. Follow their progress on Justin's Facebook page.
