Remembering the Jewish Temple, Watching and Praying Sent Tuesday, August 9, 2011

August 9, 2011 E-Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Today Jewish people everywhere are fasting and mourning as they remember the destruction of the first and second Jewish Temples in Jerusalem. The first Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians on "Tisha B'Av" (The ninth day of the Hebrew month, "Av"), 586 BCE; the second, destroyed by the Romans on "Tisha B'Av," 70 CE.

Both Jews and Christians understand the significance of God's Temple in Jerusalem. We long for the day when Messiah will come and initiate God's Kingdom on earth. We pray for God's Kingdom to come, a time when the lion will lie down with the lamb, when there will be no more tears, war, suffering, death or debt. As Christians, we long specifically for Christ's return, a time when the Heavenly Jerusalem will at last make her descent and the Tabernacle of God will forever be with humankind (Revelation 21:2-3).

The unfortunate reality of these days is that God's kingdom has not fully come. We live in a world full of sickness, hunger, natural disasters and irreversible debt. The Temple of Yahweh has long been destroyed and enemies surround Israel on every side, threatening to steal her holiest mountain.

On the ninth day of Av, as Jewish people mourn for their Holy Temple, Christians are once again reminded of their call to watch and pray (Isaiah 62:6). We are also reminded of Israel's need for fences and other preventative measures, which serve to protect Israel from neighbors who, once again, only wish to harm and, if possible, destroy them.

In this E-Newsletter, we have included several items for your information and encouragement even as you stand strong for Israel in these challenging days and dark global times. The Temple has been destroyed, but it will one day be rebuilt because God is sovereign and firmly in control of His universe. May our prayers and the proclamation of His truth help to bridge the gap between heaven and earth, and may our generation witness the fulfillment of all God has promised concerning the coming of the Messianic Kingdom.
