Hi,

I don't know if you have heard this or read about it, but do you know that demobilized soliers in Israel will be trained in Asian cooking?  This is in pursuance to the government's efforts to reduce foreign workers, chefs included, and replace these foreign workers with citizens.  So, their government will be spending more than 4.5 million of government funds just to help educate these demobilized soldiers - and get this, the budget will come from the Defense Ministry budget.  Really interesting huh?  To have a lot of soldiers turned into chefs.  Unfortunately, this would mean less job for foreign workers in Israel.

There is another interesting news I came across while preparing this.  Do you know that Malaysia is requiring all restaurants including bars and cafes in Kuala Lumpur to set up WIFI for customers.  Apparently, this is going to be a licensing requirement.  It's nice to know that you will have internet access wherever you go in Kuala Lumpur.  You can check out the links for these pieces of culinary news below.  Also, we are featuring random recipes this week.  These are just recipes that we really like.

Well, anyway, I hope you had a really wonderful New Year celebration.  I hope that 2012 turns out well for you.

    • When is a restaurant more than a restaurant? I've been wondering how we even define "restaurant" anymore, watching projects like Belle Clementine, where subscribers more or less buy season tickets to dine, or Thierry Rautureau's customer-investors at bistro Luc, or the pop-up restaurants coming and going and coming back again.

    • The Turkish aesthetic is often to take that which is most beautiful and to hide it somewhere and then to rarely speak about it. This is also the case with almost all of Istanbul's finest eateries. You will find them unadvertised down dark alleys four floors up in buildings that appear abandoned, and there will be no signs to guide you. The only way to go about discovering these places is to befriend local foodies, or to troll blogs or check out websites such as IstanbulEats.
