How To Squeeze More Into 24 Hours
You may only have 24 hours in the day but how can you manage to squeeze an extra hour into it?
Plan your time every day
Plan your time at the beginning of each week. Simple but effective and it
really will make a difference.
Spend just 5-10 minutes each day, planning your tasks and actions for the day.
You'll be more focused and more effective and waste less time on low
priority tasks.
Bonus tip: Use your commute (bus or train) to plan your time and give
you a head start when you get to work.
Get up an hour early
As long as you've had a reasonable night's sleep - why not get up an hour early and get to the gym or exercise
before you start work.
Get into work an hour early and you'll have a head start before everyone else gets in.
Reduce Your Distractions and Interruptions
On average your daily distractions could add up to 2 hours a day.
- Switch off the phone or use the answer machine or voice-mail.
- Set aside specific times to deal with your email.
- Book a meeting room, use an empty office or go to a different
location for some undisturbed time.
- No meetings without an appointment - avoid impromptu drop-ins.
If you do get interrupted, set a time limit if you have to deal with it there and then.
Do Less
If you've simply got too much to do - what can you delegate, ditch or dump?
Have you got involved in lots of new projects without realising how much time they'll take? Look at everything you do and decide if it's
important or something you no longer enjoy or need to do. All those groups you joined with great
intentions, all those invitations you say yes to.
Finish on time
Create a structure for your working day. Decide when you're going to finish
each day and stick to it. Don't accept last minute demands that will make you late.
Make sure meetings finish on time and don't run over.
Leave time at the end of the day for finishing off, shutting down your computer, clearing your desk and reviewing
the day's work before you leave. Allow 15-30 minutes.
You'll get a better start to the following day and regain the hours you'd normally spend working late.
A Place For Everything ...
Spend a few minutes at the end of each day to put things back where you found them or have places where you know
they'll be. Files and folders for paperwork in the office, a table or drawer near the entrance/exit door for -
car keys, mobile, briefcase, wallet.
Save 10 minutes scrabbling around in the morning or as you dash out.
Get step-by-step tips, ideas and practical strategies to get more out of your day in a weekly email direct to your inbox with the Take Control Of Your Time e-course.
Until next month.
