Coach Curran's Coaching Corner. Answers to FAQ's

I've set goals and done pretty good when having done so. How can I continue to set goals so it becomes a habit?

Let me begin with your first question by suggesting that you set aside some time at the end of the day to write down the six most important activities that will bring you closer to your overall goals. You will want to limit it to only six. This will allow you to stay focused and build momentum so it becomes a habit. As you may be aware, a habit usually takes about 21 days to develop, so the more you repeat an activity the more it will become part of your natural daily activity. There is also some recent evidence coming out of studies done at NASA that say it takes 30 days to develop a habit. So I would use 30 days as a reference point for developing a habit. Jack Canfield goes into greater detail about these studies and the power of visualization. Jack says.

"I really am a big believer in visualizing the qualities you want to have and expressing them fully in life. I found a recent study that NASA did, where they had the astronauts wear concave lenses for 30 days, which made the world appear upside down. But after 30 days, all the astronauts' brains started to flip the image right-side up again, even though they were still wearing these concave lenses 24
hours a day.

The neuroscientists are now telling us it takes about 30 days to create a new neuro-pathway in the brain. I think that's also true for a new self image, and when that new self image starts to be repetitively visualized, then those behaviors start to become more naturally activated, and we start to do things and almost shock
ourselves. So that's been my experience now, about a month minimum, and then you start to see some pretty amazing results"

When I first heard Jack talk about this study I was amazed at how the brain flipped the image right-side up again after 30 days and was able to create a new neuro-pathway in the brain. Our mind is so powerful. Many experts estimate that we only use about 5-10% of our minds capacity. Today you'll be learning some specific strategies on how to tap into a greater percentage your minds capacity. An important activity you can engage in on a daily basis is to ask yourself empowering questions like"Is this activity bringing me closer or further away from my intention. If the answer is yes, then by all means, move ahead with this activity. If the answer is no, then you may want to eliminate it. You can also ask yourself whether the activity is serving you or not. When you create a new habit that works or does not work for you, you weave strands of cable into the neural networks of your brain that makes the new habit stronger. It's similar to muscle memory too, like when your muscle get stronger from exercising it changes to that new added strength.

Coaches Corner Answer to FAQ's

Why should I consider having a coach and how do I find the right one for me?

Some of the most successful people in the world use coaches to make their businesses more profitable and client attractive. Sports figures like Tiger Woods and many others have used coaches to help them create winning seasons. One of the most common reasons why people hire a coach is to help them live their life to the fullest by introducing new perspectives to realize hidden potential. We all have so much hidden potential that we aren't even aware of. A coach is there to help you tap into this hidden vein of gold. Here are 10 common reasons why many successful people hire a coach:

  1. To move ahead professionally and personally!
  2. To learn strategies and ideas to increase overall productivity!
  3. To integrate a structured system to aid in setting and fulfilling goals!
  4. To achieve more balance between work and home life!
  5. To reach important career or personal goals!
  6. To learn how to tap into your higher self and live with more meaning and purpose!
  7. To receive open, direct, honest feedback that is objective and constructive!
  8. To discover how to identify and correct negative beliefs, emotional blocks, and habits that sabotage success!
  9. To help identify and maximize strengths and minimize weaknesses!
  10. To keep focused and moving toward their goals!
A good coach can help identify the hidden strengths, passions and deep rooted desires of their clients. But, more importantly, they can, AND DO, help their clients create a plan of action to turn dreams into reality! Coaches help their clients identify good habits, which move their lives forward, and bad habits which hold them back. Moreover, it's the coach's responsibility to provide the necessary guidance and support to facilitate their client's objectives. I also want to point out that most coaches aren't counselors or therapists; they are not usually qualified to diagnose or treat mental health matters. The coaches' primary role is to provide a system that makes it easier for their clients to achieve their goals.

In an interview I listened to recently with Les Brown, one of the things he talked about was the significant role mentors and coaches have played in his life. He says "mentors are so important because the Les brown that you hear right now, I know and felt that there was something other than what I was expressing, but I couldn't get to it. I didn't know how to access it.

There are some things you can't do by yourself. You need somebody who has the insight, who has the caring to help to begin to connect with that other part of yourself. George Bernard Shaw was asked a question at the end of his life. "If you had it in your power to come back again, to be born as anybody in the course of history, who would you select?" And he said, "I'd like to be the man I never was." What Mike Williams did for me was to help me to connect to the man whom I had within myself to be. Had it not been for that relationship and that mentoring and coaching for the past 35 years, I think that perhaps I would be saying the same thing that George Bernard Shaw said".

Those words from Les Brown provide a powerful testament to the value of coaching. Les earns a minimum of 300,000 a month because of coaching. I'm often asked, "How often should I listen to calls like the one you're on tonight, and my answer is always the same as Les Brown's. "You should listen to calls of this nature until you're manifesting the results.

To answer the second part of your question about finding the right coach for you, I would look for a coach that has expertise in the area that you want help in. For example, I am a business and life purpose coach who works exclusively with entrepreneurs to help them uncover their purpose in life in a way that is profitable and client attractive. I only work with business owners who are results oriented, committed to the coaching process, and will follow proven strategies for success. So a business owner or entrepreneur who wants to attract new business or double their profits would want to consider working with me or someone with similar talents and expertise. Within the life coaching umbrella there are about 30 different coaching specialties. After you find a coach that has expertise in the area you want help in, the next step is to look for a coach that you connect with, someone who intuitively resonates with you. You will want to conduct a telephone interview with several different coaches before you make a final decision on which coach is right for you. Most coaches offer a free consultation to give you an opportunity you to get to know them, so I would take advantage of the free consultation.
