» Acknowledging Your Clients
How's the saying go? "Most people are just looking to be seen in the world - to be heard, valued and respected for who they are." Our clients are no different.

So if you're looking for an efficient way to make certain your clients feel "seen" during a session, there's often nothing more effective than a succinct, heartfelt acknowledgment.

SKILL REFRESHER: an acknowledgment is based on recognizing who the individual is being rather than what they are doing. For example, suppose you liked a friend's dress and wanted to let her know.  You could compliment the dress by saying:
"Nice dress, Joan."
or you could acknowledge Joan by saying something like:
"Nice dress, Joan - you have such an eye for style and color!"
The first would probably earn you a  "thank you."  The second, though, is more likely to "land" with the person. And you'd probably notice a dramatically different reaction on Joan's face, in her body language and through her verbal response.

One caveat: the longer your acknowledgment, the less impact it's likely to have, so keep it short and sweet. Aim for a sentence or two, and base it on a trait that's likely to be under-appreciated or frequently overlooked.

A well-delivered acknowledgment will leave both client and coach beaming! Moreover, your client will walk away from the session knowing that for that time, with at least one person, they were valued for who they are
