I hope you had a good weekend - ours was pretty rainy here in Orlando which meant time indoors. It was ok for me as I had papers to correct. How do you spend your time when it rains - sleeping, watching movies and eating ice cream, or other?

Have you ever wondered if the career you are in is the 'right' one? Do you ever wake up feeling and wanting more? I know I have and more than once. I see this confusion all the time as I work with mid-level executives and small business owners who are left pondering this question: am I where I'm supposed to be?

I think it's natural that we question what we are doing, how fulfilling it is, and how is it making a difference. Often, this can result from being in routine or it can come from a major life event that makes us question our path. Our life development somehow leads us into this as move further into our career. So, if you have been struggling with this question, know that you are not alone.

One of the best ways I know (which I'm resurrecting from my 'vault;), to begin to find the answers is to write your obituary, which takes you back over your life, and really dig into events and people that have led you to where you are now. For some, your story can be big like an encyclopedia while some may only have a short story. . But, from personal experience of having done this exercise (and often), I can tell you that you will uncover revelations that can either confirm or deny that you are where you are supposed to be. Note: this is not about past regrets but about life events that have shaped you.

Some questions to ask as you are writing your obituary:
  •  key moments in your life (you can life span them, such as ages: 0-5, 5-10, 15-20, etc.)
  •  key decisions or choices you made (or felt you had to make)
  •  influential people in your life that have impacted your career choice; these don't have to be positive ones (I listed my first doctoral chair who suggested I not finish - didn't work, did it?)
  • any and all barriers you had to overcome and what did they teach you or lead you to  your current career path
  •  any 'hunches' you had as you moved through this path that you either followed them or ignored them, and did these create a new path (blessings in disguise?)
I have to warn you that this exercise might lead to some pain and tears as you be open and honest with your past; but you will find healing and calm with those past decisions that seem to haunting and find clarity. Doing this may not feel like fun but I don't think being in a foggy, limbo state is either. Isn't it better to finally know if you should stay in your current career or take steps to move in the direction of the career you desire? It's never too late!

Your Weekly Action Plan

Starting today, make time in your calendar for this exercise. Grab a notebook and pen, maybe some tissues, and find a place outside and begin writing your obituary; if you were to die right now, what would your life and career path look like. Take as much time as you need. Once you've answered all questions, go back and pick out key points, both positive and negative, and see how they match to your current circumstances: are you on track or not? If not, you have the opportunity to do a re-write.   You got this - have a wonderful week!
